Don't get me wrong, I like it a lot, but it's definitely not my favorite 2D Mario. But I always see people list this as not just the best Mario game ever, but also one of the best games ever. Why? It was very rushed and a lot of features were cut. It's laughably easy. The soundfont is pretty janky. The graphics look fine but are incredibly simplistic by SNES standards, it looks closer to an NES game than a lot of the games that would come after on the same platform.

Again, I'm not saying it's bad by any means, but it's not THAT good. I've beaten it twice in my life and I really don't have any desire to do it again. Am I missing something? Why does it get the level of praise it gets?

I really disagree with you about the soundfront being janky, many of the SMW sounds have stuck with me and I still think they sound great. Timeless.

Nostalgia, like 99% of retro games. I find most Mario games to be tame and uninspired with the exception of the original Mario 2 for NES.

I guess that's true but they are still well designed which is what matters most.

I think you're missing a few things, like how amazing the physics and controls feel even by today's standards. I honestly can't name a platformer with controls this tight and precise.
You also have to consider the mountain of custom levels that are being made for the game which you can play on real hardware. The difficulty of these levels really show off how good the game plays and controls.

The biggest problem with powerups in SMW vs SM3 is that the good ones are so easy to get in SMW (even without unlocking the secret area). My recollection is that most of the time, a mushroom is something you're more likely to try and avoid than appreciate. "Oh shit, I just lost my spare feather/flower and now only have a mushroom." It's pretty rare to be small mario and excited about getting a mushroom.

But generally speaking that is a fairly minor complaint.

My favorite game of all time. The controls are perfect. It had a great atmosphere that was a good middleground between boring Mario 1 and cartoonish Yoshi's island. The levels varied and the game is fairly long if you go for all the exits. I find it too easy as most, so i just let all the powerups go by and beat it with small Mario. The effects sounds are perfect. The music is great, even though its all sort of the same. The bad guys are well thought out and plenty of different kinds. Only gripes are the colors are a little boring sometimes (Yoshi's island was better at this, even though I don't like the game as much). And too easy.

I really wish they made a SMW2 that was just like SMW but with different levels. Not that Yoshi's island bs.
