What're you favourite things about this wonderful waste of a good thing? It really makes you wonder how different the console scene would be if sega hadn't fucked up so hard leading up to it

The games are fantastic. But they really should have used DVDs as the storage media and have it play video DVDs as well. The PS2 beat the shit out of it on those 2 points. An internal hard drive option would have been nice too.

The controller and the games; also the machine in general. I love the Dreamcast; but I donated my DC collection to goodwill recently when I needed to clean out some stuff at my parent's house. It's one of the few consoles I played so much that I don't mind emulating. The 'dreamcast feeling' is something I'll always have with me; it helps that a large amount of its best titles are on the 360/Xbone now.

The fact that Ryuichi Sakamoto designed the boot up sound

DVD as a medium wasn't available outside of japan until 1997, and even then, wasn't popular because most films weren't originally getting put on it because it was expensive.
DVD players in '97 were anywhere from around $600 USD to over $1000 USD.
In 1998, when the DC finally got mass produced for the intent of selling, CD was just coming down in price to where you could actually afford to buy a stack of them to do whatever you wanted to with them. The move to GD-ROM was an opportunity taken at a time when the future of gaming media was currently unknown.
PS2 came out in 2000, after DVD player prices alone had dropped below $300 for the average unit.

That just shows the unfortunate timing of the Dreamcast's release more than anything.

>CD was just coming down in price to where you could actually afford to buy a stack of them to do whatever
Yeah like burn pirated games. Just when a lot of people were becoming internet savvy enough to do it themselves too, the poor thing never stood a chance.

I skipped DC back in the day. Today I love the DC because it has that arcade feel that sega is so famous for. Without typing out a huge explanation, take PSO for example. It's an mmorpg but it plays very arcade like. Combat would feel perfectly at home on an arcade cabinet. At first you think the aiming and camera is a bit janky, but as you play you realize it's part of the fun and skill learning to control it and "git gud". I don't think the game would be near as fun if it had a "good" camera.

I would have been pretty blown away to play a console online back in the day. I mean, I had PC and enjoyed halflife, CS, TFC and a few more online games, but to play on a console online would have been amazing.

I'm not the hugest fan of the controller, the part that holds the vmu hits my fingers, but the vmu was neat.

That was dumb, you should have just gave it to some kid that was interested. Goodwill sells online, bringing no benefit to your local community. They also have predatory practices of paying the most vulnerable workers way below minimum wage. Seriously, you should look into their practices, it's shady as fuck and pretty detestable.

DC is a fantastic console and I have mine hooked up right now, but to pretend it would have done much more than what it did even if Sega was in good shape is extremely naive. It was cursed by being in the middle of the gen gap and even launch PS2 games completely blow it out of the water. Compare Madden 2001 vs NFL2K or imagine the DC running something like SSX. Fast forward not even a year and you have games like GTA3 or FFX that never would have been possible on the DC. Sega would have canned the DC anyway and had to rush out a new console just to not be in another Saturn style period of complete irrelevancy. The much more interesting scenario is if SoJ wasn't full of the dumbest fucking retards to ever run a business who intentionally tanked the company just because they got butthurt over whitu piggu actually being able to sell their product and let the American division run the company, which would have ended up with Sega forming a partnership with 1 of Microsoft, Sony, or Silicon Graphics depending at what point they're allowed to take over.

It's fucking ridiculous. Dreamcast is literally my #1 console of all time but being a collector is so god damn expensive. 2 years ago is was not like this at all...
At least the DC community is growing at a alarming rate. I was online on PSO, Q3A, and AFO the last couple of nights and there were over 40 players per private server which are new records. But still, it's more bad than it is good for some one trying to collect and even worse for some newfag just trying to get a feel of the DC experience.

It's not just that, though.
The original design for the DC was to have a VooDoo 2 card equivalent in it, but when VooDoo leaked that they were going to have hardware in a not yet announced consosle (people knew a console was coming, but no one really knew anything about the Dreamcast yet until the ad aired) Sega broke their contract with VooDoo and had to rework the hardware aspect of the DC. Not only that, but breaking their contract with VooDoo ended up costing them quite a pretty penny at the time.

The timing was horrible and a lot of bad decisions were made. Had it actually featured the VooDoo 2 card or whatever actual stuff they'd use, it'd be a much more powerful system than what we actually got. But SoJ didn't want people knowing anything til its release because it was supposed to be a huge surprise.
