what is the best version of this game?
SNES or PC?

Genesis. Bigger resolution, more spatial awareness.

This. SNES version sucks aside from music. PC is probably fine but I can confirm Genesis version is great.

>> No.5512984

The PC version is the objectively best version. The genesis version is okay but too saturated and pixelated. The SNES version is bad.

Be sure to play with composhite video :^)

Good luck beating the second level. On any version.

Any version is not worth it. It was ruined by company interference as seen in level 2

I'm seriously awful at videogames but never had any particular trouble with that level.

I even like it; the ostrich part was fun.
The animal pyramid is tougher on the SNES version though, since the jumping mechanism can be a bit awkward and that particular version doesn't let you simply bypass the part where you have to swing on tails.

I think PC version would otherwise be the best version due to its graphics and audio, but it's not as polished in some parts. There are some graphics/gameplay bugs, with the most important being that Timon's bonus stages don't have any purpose.

I beat it when I was 8 years old. Maybe I had faster reflexes, was probably that I didn't have many other games to play.

>> No.5513364

The original developer has a video where he is playing the Genesis version, but he says the SNES version has better effects (such as the stampede level)

But less colors onscreen and inferior midi tunez.

Way easier on Genesis since you can grab onto one of the hippos that you can't on SNES, and it effectively skips an annoying platforming section across water.

I never got past the waterfall with the falling logs. For some reason it always frustrated me to the point of literal butthurt.

>> No.5515223

Not gonna lie, this thread is a nice lesson. I figured Lion King on the Genesis and the SNES were as different as Aladdin on those two systems, but apparently they're a lot more similar. I'll probably give the SNES version a whirl soon.

If you end up trying it some day again, don't try to reach the waterfall from the lowest spot of the map where the logs are floating horizontally towards you (bottom screenshot in my image). Just skip that part and go for the ledge that's above it (top screenshot). It's easier to figure out the log pattern from there.

Some differences so far:
- Genesis version runs slower (making it slightly easier on average in the beginning stages). Genesis version also has more issues with velocity/acceleration and jumping, though, so it's a slight balance, especially towards the middle and end of the game.
- Each version has its weird quirks. Big ones I've noticed in the early stages are how the porcupine behaves in level 1's secret area (very annoying w/r/t the exit in the Genesis version) and one of the vultures in level 3 after the geyser section, which goes offscreen and resets its health quite often in the SNES version.
- SNES is more prone to slowdowns, which I never noticed either as a kid on real Genesis hardware or as an adult emulating it.
- I've played the Genesis's level 2 for dozens of hours in my youth, so both consoles' versions are relatively easy. Of note, though, the ostrich sections are interestingly balanced for both systems: the SNES's higher speed means the sections are less jank, but the un-indicated section includes one "gotcha!" killer at the end; the Genesis's lower speed introduces the much higher possibility of pressing jump too quickly or going too slowly, but the sections are otherwise very fair.
- Simba's exile (level after stampede) is where things get difficult on the Genesis. It's pure precise-esque platforming, which is difficult on this system. The slower movement speed and the possibility of not being fast enough means you're very likely to miss seemingly grabbable ledges. This stage still has its difficulties on the SNES, but everything lines up well.

I haven't noticed anything. Can you explain a bit more?

Also, has anyone else ever done the thing where you reach 99 bugs in the Bug Toss bonus stage and then Timon starts dropping nothing but 1-ups? Afterwards when you go back to playing Simba's levels, his life-counter is empty. I assume it'd drop back to 9 if you were to lose enough lives, but I haven't tested it.
Anyway, I've managed to do it a couple of times but never had the opportunity to get any footage of it.

Reminder that small gameplay bugs which occur at certain times are less important than a game’s resolution and color depth throughout the entire game. For this reason the PC port is the optimal experience.

Right after you reach the checkpoint on the top part of the level, you need to take a specific path; aside from jumping on the logs it's the only way to reach that ledge. So if you go any other way at all, the water-slides are constructed to land you to the bottom of the waterfall. See picture for the route.

To be perfectly honest a lot of these complaints sound like you just can't adjust to the speed of the Genesis version. I've played that version to death and never had issues with acceleration or jumping.

They're not really "complaints", just comparisons to the SNES version. Getting used to the acceleration wouldn't be too hard with the Genesis, but it's a literal non-existent issue with the SNES.

>>5515721
It was a mistake on my part. The porcupine in pic related on both versions has the same path, but in the SNES, it would almost always be to the left of the platform when you'd initially drop down to this area, whereas it's often on the right in the Genesis.

>> No.5518454

As a curiosity, Lion King on SNES is one of the few games that let you check what version of the SNES PCB do you have on the cheat screen menu.

That's wrong though. It isn't even an issue on Genesis. It's just different. You wouldn't need to get used to it if you had started with the Genesis version. Don't blame the games because your retard sloth brains can't keep up.

The game has kind of shitty controls anyway, like most western-developed games that focus more on visual presentation than actual gameplay and precision.

It's not a speed difference, dumbnumb, the genesis horizontal resolution is simply larger.
