I never understood the love for this game. Tekken was cooler, sounded better and the controls were slightly more involving. Virtua fighter only had guard, punch and kick which was really lame. All of the characters felt floaty and loose and it didn't reward you with learning anything about how to play. You could quite easily button bash your way through it with no satisfaction or reward

The tech was the best of it's time. VF, VF2 and VF3 were top of the line at their release. I remember seeing that infamous VF3 demo video at E3 1996, blew me away. At the time there was nothing like it, not even on high end gaming PCs with the first 3D accelerators.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nTBeGAhk79I
Here, the video was identical to this one from AOU '96

Gameplaywise it's also a joy to play. More tactical than just smashing buttons.

Virtua Fighter 1 runs at 30fps, so all the animation was made for this framerate. So it is a slower paced game, which does give you a little more time to think about moves. But it is a competent fighter. The Saturn port isn;t as bad as people say. Virtua Fighter Remix is interesting because it uses the VF2 Saturn engine. The 32x port is also good.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QDbn9lF7k8Y&t=10s

Virtua Fighter 2 is a much better game though, it runs at 60fps, and is much faster and feels more refined.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKrFDojjObE

The Xbox 360 port (also on Xbox One BC) is the best way to play Virtua Fighter 2. It's the Model 2 original ported/ emulated by M2. The definitive home port . But the Saturn version is still great for the extra modes. PC win95 is a port of the Saturn game but with the option to use arcade models. Plus there is also Virtua Fighter Kids.

Virtua Fighter 3 is pretty awesome too, with its varied areas and fighting surfaces and the dodge move that lets you move around in 3D. The Saturn kinda got a small taste of VF3 with Fighters Mega Mix. Fighters Mega Mix does have the VF3 move set and dodge move, the lady from Virtua Cop has Aoi's moves from VF3. But the game does use the Fighting Vipers engine, and does have a different feel. Virtua Fighter 3 was only ever ported to the Sega Dreamcast as Virtua Fighter 3: TB. It still remains a Dreamcast exclusive. It didn't even end up as a Windows port, like many other Dreamcast games did. You either emulate the Model 3 version (or find an arcade board), or play the Dreamcast port.

There has never been a bad Virtua Fighter game, IMO. Maybe except for the Genesis/ Mega Drive port of 2. Or those animated Game Gear games? But 4 is awesome and so is VF5. I remeber when Sega released Virtua Fighter 4 on the PS2 with VF4: Evolution mode with the VF1 models as a 10-year anniversary thing. Sega literally dropped that port at $19.99 on day one. That was a crazy good deal.

to see liquid Dural for the first time, there wasnt a game out for the PC or home consoles that could match those graphics. hell most movies back then didnt have CGI that could match it.

kids today look at it now and cant understand what made VF3 (Model 3 board) so great and ahead of everyone else.

just remember when VF3 came out Tekken 3 came out using the same graphic engine as Tekken 1

VF3:TB for the Dreamcast was horrible, it played nothing like the arcade and was outmatched graphically by Soul Caliber 1. guess thats what happens when the original people dont port the game and spend all their time making Shenmue

>VF3:TB for the Dreamcast was horrible

It wasn't that bad of a port. But it definitely was rushed by Genki. Graphically, it's a step down, but it still played well enough at least.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Mej2tJC_rI

> guess thats what happens when the original people dont port the game and spend all their time making Shenmue

They were working on more than Shenmue. They also had that Ferrari simulator for Naomi/ Dreamcast and Outtrigger. They were also developing Virtua Fighter 4 behind the scenes.

But the VF3:TB port still did suffer.

Back in the day it was the poison of the arcade

Due to it's expensive buy or rental cost for the machine on launch, some arcades would charge .50 cents to pay instead of .25 cents like it's other rival arcade cabinets at the time.

Add to it that if you sucked, the first match could end in LEGIT 10 seconds of game play, that .50 cents was in the toilet. If you are good you can breeze through the game in 4-5 minutes.

So it was totally not worth your money in the arcade scene.

It relied on expensive cabinet unit costs along with HYPE of graphics over gameplay.

A crowd around a Virtua Fighter machine during launch week brought tons of money due to extremely high admission cost (.50 to even a dollar in some regions) along with super short gameplay time (super quick character select screens, 5-10 second rounds average, skippable win poses)

In one hour with Street Fighter at a crowded competitive arcade, you would have an average of 20 matches happen at a revenue of $5.25 in that hour

Virtua Fighter in that same hour and traffic would net you $90 bucks in that hour average (if .50 cents a game) and $180 (if set at a buck a challenge)

It's crazy but it's smart Sega math

>> No.5511351

>>5511346
I see, so it just made a lot of money off of the launch hype and people stopped caring afterwards. That must be why the Virtua Fighter 1 and 2 were two of the best selling games on the Saturn.

>> No.5511360

>>5511351
In that one week at the arcade, Virtua Fighter made more money then a whole 6 months of Street Fighter 2 Turbo or early Mortal Kombat 2.

And it all stems from the math mentioned in >>5511346. Street Fighter or MK's $5.25 hour average is nothing compared to the quick revenue of Virtua Fighter's $90-$180 an hour.

Even if people didn't care a week later, they were super ahead of the pack for months

>That must be why the Virtua Fighter 1 and 2 were two of the best selling games on the Saturn

Virtua Fighter 1 was a pack-in game for the Sega Saturn. It sold well based on that factor alone. But there was some critism about the port not being as good as it could have been, so Sega developed Virtua Fighter Remix and gave it away for free to anyone that filled out their registration cards.

Virtua Fighter 2 was one of the best selling games on the Sega Saturn in Japan. It was actually packaged as the pack-in game for the Saturn in NA and other European regions along with Daytona (In some cases, Sega Rally instead) and Virtua Cop. Virtua Fighter 2 was really big in Japan.

>>5511568
>Does this mean vf remix runs with 60, or 30 fps?

VF Remix is still a 30fps game. The developers didn't change the framerate because they didn't want to alter the feeling of the gameplay.

>>5511154
>What do you think about Fighters Megamix?

The balance is all over the place, and it is kinda like a Marvel vs Capcom type of game, but with multiple AM2 fighting games. I like Fighters Megamix a lot. It's good, even though it plays a bit more like Fighting Vipers.

I still remember when VF3 dropped. It was late summer, early autumn 96. I walk into my local arcade, and there is a HUGE crowd of people surrounding this new white machine near the entrance. Even arcade personnel is standing around staring ignoring work. I have never seen anything like that before, or after.

VF3 spearheaded numerous 3D techniques that became a staple in video games afterwards. In comparison Tekken 3, one of the immortal pillars of pleb gaming debuted more than half a year later, and it looked laughably outdated and outclassed.

>> No.5513148

I don't understand how Virtua Fighter got it's reputation as 'the hard one' when it only uses three buttons, has an enormous input buffer, is big on universal rules, has a much more forgiving ground game (to the point where rising kicks have i-frames), shorter combos, and doesn't require you to learn advanced movement techniques.
