Have you guys ever checked out ShopGoodwill? They have a ton of retro vidya. Some auctions that have sought after games can run for a shitton, but most of the time you can find some really good deals there.

>> No.547930

Shipping is usually far too much to make anything worth it.

I did get my first Atari 2600 on there though. Cast about $42 and came with a bunch of stuff which wasn't listed or shown.

>> No.547959

That's how I started my NES collection. Sometimes they'll have like "Lot of 10 NES games" listed and I buy those. If I get sports games or other ones I'm not interested in I just donate them to my local Goodwill.

Some of the bidders there are really retarded too. I've seen auctions where there are a bulk of shitty sports games and one copy of Earthbound go for $300+

I see. You have to search for the good stuff. Now I see some things. Though, I don't see any prices better than eBay.

Not for a while. It still takes a special eye/knowledge to spot the "collectibles." Unless it's obvious or notable in some way, like a complete, fully working system & games, it's easier & quicker to just tag and shelve it.
They're not game collectors no more than they're purveyors of fine art. Earthbound is the same as Troy Aikman Football just as some long lost Rembrant is the same some art student's project.

Fuck goodwill. They used to be cool before they figured out that games are worth something. There's a lady who works at my local GoodWill who literally hates me. I have no idea why. I'm a polite quiet guy and I try to do things to help out like straighten up racks and organize things that are untidy whenever I can to keep my karma high so I'll find something good. If I find a loose CD and then ten minutes later I find its case I go back and find the CD and restore it to its case. I actually help this lady but still she hates me. And I think I finally figured it out. She is pissed because I used to go in there regularly and clear out every game they had. They sold cartridges and everything for between 1 and 2 dollars so I'd bring $50 and walk home with a backpack full of 40 games. It was awesome. Now they sell games at $5 minimum including shit games like "Barbie's Hair Styler" and "Number Cruncher". I overheard this lady explaining to another cashier one time about how much money they had lost out on a few years ago and I think that's the root of it right there. She hates me because she thinks I got more than I deserve. Well Jesus christ. I was just taking advantage of their own pricing. I don't see how that entitles her to be a bitch to me. I bascially never go there any more. The games are just ridiculous prices.

Well, look at the news. Every other week some soccer mom finds some piece of art or videogame in a goodwill that's worth thirty fucking thousand dollars, and all the employees there at the Goodwill were too fucking retarded to notice what was right under their nose. And the worse part is that, exactly like you said, now that theres a whole "gaming craze" they want 5 fucking dollars for Madden 2008 and Elmos Adventure.

I find it ironic that the very employees that work at a thrift store miss the goddamn point of the service the store is trying to provide.

If you ask them a question and they treat you like a retard and scoff at you openly with their pre-established friends who are all freeloading in the store?

Nobody assumes that the nimrod at the Gamestop counter is secretly judging you about your pre-orders, because they don't fucking care, and they have to act civilly to you and provide customer service, unlike the unwashed fat autist at a privately owned brick and mortar cornerstore who only opened up shop to have a place to hang out with his friends and play D&D and doesn't actually want to run a business.

But there's no magical button in Goodwill's stores labelled "sell on ebay." Crazy as it sounds, each item you see up on that site is probably 3-4 hours of work. This includes:
picking out the item(s)
testing if necessary
photographing & doing any editing to it
writing up a description, possibly research too
And if it sells, negotiating with the buyer
taking payment
boxing & shipping
driving to the post office if they don't use a carrier service
paperwork, I'm sure the money is not all going into some manager's paypal account.

Plus there's also tracking and storing the items so some new worker doesn't accidentally shelve it, maintaining an area to pack items for ship, and hiring/training staff in the relevant skills ...think about some of the workers you see at GW, do you want him taking your credit card number?

In the end, it's just easier/cheaper move things to the floor in quantity and cross your fingers it's not your store that sells Stadium Events for 2.99.

I know you're probably just playing devil's advocate, but I don't buy that. Goodwill makes its money off of:

A) Receiving donations for free
B) Getting sales for cheap

So no matter which side you're on, you're contributing to their overall profits for disadvantaged folks. Just because you're not poor doesn't mean you can't shop at Goodwill and contribute to their cause.
