>Try to keep things /vr/ related: Focus should be on 5th Gen (+Dreamcast) games on back. Slight off topic is fine so long as it's related to CRTs, such as later 16:9 models, HD models, etc. Systems with backwards compatibility are also safe territory, as are re-releases on newer hardware. PC CRTs are also welcome and appreciated.
>Produce OC! Bust out your camera and take photos of your CRTs displaying all sorts of games, featuring all sorts of tubes, using all sorts of signals. Getting good shots can be hard, but if you take enough, at least a few will turn out alright. Tips'n'Tricks™ coming soon.
>Try and give as much information as possible when asking for info on a specific set, or troubleshooting an issue to expedite and help you may receive. As always, Google is your friend and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either; Seriously, there's literally 6 years of backlog at this point.
>Share appreciation for other's choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. Always remember to show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Limited discussion of video processing and scaling devices is alright, but remember to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories.

Those PVM-8s are not only small they're notoriously unreliable whether they're actually inferior or just got knocked around a lot more from being "portable". I have a PVM-5 that has never fully fitted up and I've never bothered trying to repair although I only paid $5 for it while that one you're looking at is going to be an $80 gamble for a display that only has 250 vertical lines. You should spend the same money on an RGB to YPbPr Component transcoder and a quality consumer CRT purchased locally.

So I have an old Sanyo CRT I've been using for years. It has always been pretty dark at its brightest setting but serviceable if you can turn up the brightness in game. I recently moved and now it is even darker (might be unrelated to the move). Older games are still playable because of the bright colors but darker games like survival horror stuff and 5th gen and up are pretty much unplayable because almost everything is black. I've read that this means the cathode is going out. I hate to get rid of it because it is a flat screen crt and looks great when it works but I really don't think I can fix it. Is it time for me to just cave and buy a new crt?

You could do it the old-fashioned way with a TV card in a PC running Dscaler. In this case, your PC is the scaler/deinterlacer.

Don't use it with a common USB video capture dongle like some generic "easycap" clone or you'll get unplayable lag, and also avoid any card that claims to do hardware encoding (since those onboard encoders always cause lag and you don't need them). Use it with a PCI card with a supported chipset that does no onboard encoding, and the lag will be highly reduced.

This was a common setup in the early to mid-2000s because quality is good, overhead is low, Dscaler is configurable, and good cards are cheap.

Any anons who use their CRTs for stuff other than gaming, there's a model of Roku (Express Plus, it seems to be a Wal-Mart exclusive) that is specifically designed to work with older TVs and has a 4:3 aspect ratio option. I set up a Plex media server to host all of my torrents and bam. It only outputs in HDMI or composite, but HD remasters are fucking gorgeous. TNG on Netflix looks amazing. I might buy an HDMI to S-video transcoder and see how much I can bump the image up. I mean, I guess I could do that with any Roku, but then they wouldn't be 4:3 compatible.

Do you want any CRT or a PVM, specifically? If you just want a CRT, check Craigslist. If you want a PVM, good luck. Some will swear that you can easily get them from TV stations, but I checked every major and minor one within a reasonable driving radius many years back. They all chucked them years ago. People say it "depends where you live" but I think that means that it just "depends" if you happen to live near a TV station that still has a CRT that they are aware of.

I actually got mine from a video/photo editing business. Dude had it in his office for over a decade and as much as he loved it, he never had a reason to use it anymore and gave it away. I've also seen some local craigslist ads from photo editing companies that are liquidating old stock and have CRTs listed, so it seems like a decent option based on my experience. Before that, the original owner was a nearby A/V and communications sales and rental shop. Might also be worth a look if you can find any near you, never know what they have in the back room.

I bought one for super cheap a few years back with the intent to do the same. Apparently the VGA pinout on an Extron (or at least the one I got) is extremely different from standard. I had bought what I needed to cobble together an adapter, but I ended up losing interest and since I've moved, my PC and CRT aren't even in the same room anymore, so meh.

Post pics of yours once it's set up though, I'd love to see it. What model Extron did you get? And that's a hell of a nice LD collection, by the way. I think I've heard that Star Wars set is the only way to see the original theatrical cuts, unedited, as even the VHS releases have some tweaks, but those were taken directly from the original reels.

Hey, what are your video encode settings to use on Wii?

I've been having trouble with my old Trinitron.
Any time there's a pure white flash on screen, it seems like the image loses its vertical sync for a second and has to reset itself. White, full screen flashes are the only time this occurs. So its not a huge deal, but it makes some old anime like Vampire Hunter D unwatchable and it's distracting in a few video games, mostly title screens.
Any ideas? Would opening it up and adjusting its vertical sync solve the issue? Bad cap maybe? I opened it up a while back and all the caps looked surprisingly good but it wasn't the most thorough search. It's an old enough set that it only uses an OSD for volume and contrast adjust. There's no menu so no service menu. It's mostly pots for any real service adjustments.

Just an update, I messed with the vertical and horizontal frequency pots and couldn't land on anything that would fix the white flash issue. The TV still loses its sync whenever the screen goes completely white. On the bright side I did improve geometry and managed to fix an issue with sporadic wavy lines by tinkering with the horizontal frequency. Will have to open it up one last time to bring the vertical size up just a little more as I shrunk it just a bit too much when messing around with everything but hey, glad I got something on my plate.

I got an Extron VSC 100. The pinout is actually pretty messed up, it has both a HD15 standard VGA and a Mac DB15, but you're supposed to plug the PC into the Mac port so that it can output through the HD15, or plug a Mac through the HD15 port so that the pass through output is the DB15. It's pretty weird to explain, but basically you just need a DB15 to VGA cable (and a RGBS/RGBHV cable for the 15Khz output).
As for Star Wars, you're right:only the Special Edition (with added scenes and CGI) is available on BR. The original edition was available as a bonus on a certain DVD release, but it was a botched transfer (and possibly cropped to 4:3).
There was a fan made release called the Despecialized Edition that was using 35 and 16 mm film stock, but some parts couldn't be salvaged and are thus upscaled LD from this release.

So emulators running at correct resolution, then? Look for models with component or RGB (preferred) like anon said, but also make sure the display is standard definition, not ED or HD. Although the Wii itself can do 480p that's not what you want for the older systems.

>>5472526
>>5472614
Losing sync on a white flash (a common issue) isn't typically a problem that can be helped through servicing the display. The TV's dc restoration circuit may just be too slow to handle the sudden signal burst, causing lost sync.

By any chance are you using long video cables, cheapo cables, and/or a cheapo switch between your source devices and your display? If so, try removing the switch and subbing in shorter cables, then test and report back. If it helps, and you find such cable lengths and/or the switch necessary for your setup, you may need to insert a good distribution amplifier into the signal chain (not for its "signal splitting" feature, just for its dc restoration), or swap the cheap switch out for one with built-in dc restoration.

>>5472640
>The original edition was available as a bonus on a certain DVD release, but it was a botched transfer (and possibly cropped to 4:3).
It was included as a bonus with the special edition remastered original trilogy. It was a botched transfer in the sense that the picture was slightly washed out (not a major issue) and it was encoded with hard letterboxes, not anamorphic. So the transfer is 4:3 including the mattes but not pan & scan. Both the laserdiscs and this transfer have been used as source material for various fan edits.

Thanks for your reply.
>The TV's dc restoration circuit may just be too slow to handle the sudden signal burst, causing lost sync.
This sounds right to me. I figured it might be a common problem with these older sets but it was tough finding anything helpful through Google.
>By any chance are you using long video cables, cheapo cables, and/or a cheapo switch between your source devices and your display?
Wii OEM composite cables. They don't seem particularly long (or particularly high quality for that matter, but they are official and there's zero interference otherwise) and I'm not running through a converter box, just straight to the TV. Any suggestions? Would a distribution amp help in this case? I'm completely unfamiliar with them.

Neat, I didn't know that. I've seen the despecialized editions and wondered what their resources were. Although nowadays I tend to just pop in the VHS for nostalgia factor. Plus the sound system on my CRT kicks the shit out of my LCD. Audio is like 75% of immersion anyway.

To me, the fact that it's only 6' of cabling between your source and the display, with no switch, confirms the TV's dc restoration circuit as the culprit, but that's also why I hesitate to recommend a distribution amplifier since you're adding a piece of equipment that you really don't need for anything else just to clamp the signal. It's one option if you want to keep using this TV and avoid that problem, another would be using a video switch (which you might find more useful than a distribution amp in the future) that performs dc restoration.

If you want to try something that *might* work without spending any money, and you still have a VCR, try routing your signal through that. If it's a nice prosumer or pro model that has an "edit" switch that amplifies the video output when used as a source deck, try it both ways.

That's because pastebins are always going to be limited to the knowledge of the one guy putting them together, compared to collaborative efforts like wikis.

Sharp is a fine electronics brand, a historical partner of Nintendo, but later in CRT's life, mid-2000s, they had become more of a value mark and were being sold in Walmart in the US. That doesn't mean they were altogether inferior. (They were still innovating quality-based features on inexpensive VHS VCRs into the late '90s for example.) As long as it's confirmed SD, there's nothing wrong with it just because it's a Sharp.

Thanks again anon, but I actually managed to fix it earlier today without adding any extra hardware or cables. Since the TV's contrast setting (labeled picture, as per usual with Trinis) is the only setting that is not handled by a pot on the onboard controls, and instead relies on the rudimentary OSD, and since the TV was already very bright in terms of contrast as it was, I decided to mess with what I think was labeled Image Value (maybe, that name could be wrong but it was something similar) pot that was on the main board. What this control actually does is that it acts more like a sub-contrast setting on more modern sets. So I could crank down the already high contrast from there, then crank it back up from the onboard controls, and voila, no more sync loss when white flashes onscreen. For whatever reason, how bright that pot was set to was apparently just too high for the TV's DC restoration circuit. What I'm left with now is only a slightly dimmer image with no more sync loss. Real glad I managed to sort it out, this has been driving me mad for a while now.

On something like that you really should just use 480p through component because you're going to have slightly more input lag than standard definition CRTs anyway, as HD CRTs use digital processing to scale lower resolutions. It handles them very similarly to how modern HDTVs handle them. Wii widescreen isn't native, so you will be stretching a 4:3 image to obtain 16:9. It honestly doesn't look that bad, but games do look cleaner in their native 4:3 ratio. Just try both and find what you like.
If you're using it to play Wii and GCN games on that TV you should have a great time. But maybe go for a standard definition set if you want 240p emulation station.

It's better to set the Wii to the physical aspect ratio of your screen regardless of software type, then use your display's zoom/stretch/compress settings to correct what's wrong on individual titles. There are enough native 16:9 Wii games to make it worth doing this way. There's no reason to leave a Wii in 4:3 mode when the display is physically 16:9; better to let the Wii create an anamorphic 16:9 image to fit the whole screen.

There is though. The image quality is superior when it isn't being stretched.
I mean, the reason to use it is to see more of the game world. If that's what you want then fine. I'm not really saying you shouldn't use it. But you have to know going in that there is a compromise to be made in doing that.

Anamorphic widescreen is native. Nothing says pixels have to be square. As long as the full resolution of the image is used and not matted out, it is a native format that can be manipulated by the display.

>But you have to know going in that there is a compromise to be made in doing that.
We are already using CRTs with analog video signals. There is no discrete physical pixel access. Better to use the full screen than pretend we are compromising some non-existent 1:1 signal to pixel triad correlation.

>Why should I run Wii in standard def over the ED 480p?
If you are "emulating" a retro setup with the wii, one of the wii's strong points is that it outputs at the same 240p resolution as any of the older 8-16 bit consoles would have. This will cause your TV to have scan lines, which are a side effect of the method of displaying 240p on a 480i set. However, you can and do whatever makes you happy. If you like the look of 480p, go for it. The gameplay should remain the same irrelevant of the display method.

A tube tv that is not listed as "Enhanced Definitinon". You can research the model number of any TV and find out if it is "High Definition", "Enhanced Definition" or just a TV. Overall, when shopping for used CRT tvs, most are Standard definition. Some are ED, and some are HD, with the ED sets being the most rare from my personal experience of shopping.

Quite possibly. However, I don't know. I would suggest that you find a similar model made by the same maker, and if there is none, I would avoid messing with it. Alternatively, there is software that will allow you to create a monitor driver with custom refresh rates. I am no expert on the different software, but I am sure others here could chime in. Going by model number, that should be a plug & play monitor. Is it not reporting itself as plug & play? You shouldn't need a driver unless you're not able to select a supported resolution in display settings, since plug & play monitors auto-report supported resolutions and refresh rates directly. Are you unable to hit a supported resolution/refresh combo?

I would not recommend selecting a similar driver from the same manufacturer, you could actually be limiting your display options that way, for no gain other than having the (wrong) monitor model number displayed in device manager.

If your goal for the emulated retro systems is to look their best at the original intended display resolutions, it's as simple as using a non-ED/HD display. They generally display in what's now called 480i, which old consoles exploited to run in what's now called 240p. This is era-correct, yes.

If you live somewhere where RGB on TVs was common and is what's on your TV, that's what you should go for. If not, such as in the US, what's called "component" is in practice equivalent in quality and if that's what's on your TV, that is ideally what you should use. For hooking up just the Wii to run all your retro, that's all you need to consider. You would gain nothing by transcoding one to the other in this case.

Even with a little bit of blur from 10ms response time the difference in screen size and the convenience of just firing up Retroarch in 2 seconds whenever I want without having to mess with switching monitors has me playing on the LCD most of the time. The 4:3 image on my 30" 16:10 monitor is 26.5" compared to the 18.7" visible on my CRT monitor.

If I could get a hold of a large low-lag, fast-response time LCD I'm not sure I'd be too interested in CRTs anymore. The lack of contrast on LCD can be largely mitigated with a low-backlight setting, and a bias light behind the monitor. And when I'm playing colorful games like I usually am the lack of ability to go completely dark to the point you can't see anything at all on a black screen in a darkened room isn't something I'm too concerned about.

To each his own I guess but yeah, after playing on CRT for a few months even low lag LCDS feel like playing in molasses to me. Apologists will say it isn't perceptible but even if it's placebo I can still feel the difference, although it usually comes down to particular games.
As for black levels, I get what you're saying. Even on shit LCDs with lots of backlight bleed if the entire image is bright, then the dark spots will look appropriately dark. More so if you've taken the time to properly calibrate. But I still prefer the black levels of CRTs as in general they are much better, so long as we're not talking about OLEDs but like with any display technology, that obviously comes with its own host of issues.
Screen size doesn't bother me much. I'm usually sitting in a chair just a few feet away from the screen when gaming at any given time. Not that I've measured it but my 32" LCD doesn't seem far off from my 19" CRT at all when it comes to 4:3 screen size.
I also just prefer the look of older games on CRTs. I like how vibrant they display, in general I just think color is more appealing on CRTs even if for the most part it's often less accurate, although this is more common on older sets you have less calibration control over. The inherent gaussian blur of CRTs goes a long way in makng older games more presentable I think. If I were playing older games on LCD, which I do sometimes, I wouldn't resort to filters to emulate the CRT look. I get that people enjoy them but I've yet to see one that truly compared favorably to what it's trying to capture, although they have gotten close and I see the appeal. I'm not particularly after the sharp pixel look that LCDs offer, and that's partly why I prefer CRTs, but if I do game on LCDs, that's the look I'll take over filters. I think it's important to take advantage of the inherent strengths of the of the technology you're using, and LCDs can look really sharp and clean if you can appreciate that look.

Shaders on a 2560x1600 or better monitor have all the "blur" you want or need (I don't actually agree with this description of a CRT, nothing should be blurry on a good CRT).

Lag: are you using runahead?

Color on a LCD is largely a matter of calibration, and most people do not get it right. Most specifically they play games on a monitor which is calibrated to the sRGB standard, and this will result in a game looking washed out. It needs a different gamma setting, which is provided by shaders.

Does it have any image ghosting/trails issues? It's somewhat common for phosphors to die out and leave a slight green tint to everything as well as introducing image ghosting. If this is the problem you have, there's very little you can fo to fix it. If not, it's probably just a calibration issue.

Sucks for those guys, I was fortunate enough to buy a CRT and not run into any issues with damage while shipping and I'd be pissed if I had, but at the same time, it takes like 5 minutes to ask a seller to double box a monitor, to not ship screen side up, and to add lots of FRAGILE and THIS SIDE UP labels to the box. You said when you first turned it on with a black screen it looked fine though. How does it look when you turn it on with color content displayed? Childless millennials have lots of cash to waste on retro games and weed, trying to replicate their youth by playing games in a way they never did as children for nostalgia's sake. Comical isn't it? Almost as much as those beards they wear to hide their bitch jawlines.

It's best to just find a consumer set or two, man. Still pretty affordable and they actually do have that retro feel. Cuz let's be honest, at best we all played over composite, and often RF. That's retro. Even arcade monitors back then didn't have the sharp and colorful pixels w/ well-defined scanlines. And some good image tuning balance can make even composite look damn fine.

Also, why don't people strive for good sound systems in their retro setups? No one ever discusses bass levels, sub and driver positions, how many speakers to use, what brands make the best equipment, etc. I mean if you're gonna go apeshit with an RGB setup, why not go apeshit with a surround sound system w/ large sub? One of may favorite things about arcade machines is their sound punch and clarity. That's as immersive as pretty pictures. Especially in shooters.

Not this shit again.

Just because you were clueless as a kid does not mean the rest of us were. I have not used composite video since 1993, arcade monitors looked extremely good and crisp due a high quality RGB image (particularly Mortal Kombat I and II were amazing). PC monitors also had great RGB images. By the late 90s anyone serious about video games who was not literally a kid less than ten years old was aware of s-video if they were paying attention, and a lot had switched to it by 2000 (Dreamcast really popularized it in NA, although PlayStation s-video cables were available). Emulators began to be popular in the late 90s, again providing a nice RGB image.

Meant to say RF video. Regardless, an inexpensive colorimeter is going to be much faster and handle low-luminance readings better than a mid-priced spectro, while having having much lower unit-to-unit variability and potential for sensor drift. Unless you need to match prints to a display, there's not much reason to go with a spectro, and I doubt anyone on /vr/ is doing proofing on their PVMemes. Besides, CRTs don't have comprehensive color management systems or more than two-point grayscale adjustments, so you're limited in how accurate you can get without an external LUT anyway.

In 1993, I was 8. I didn't care about RGB because I had never even seen a game played on a PVM. Neither had you unless you were a dev. Nobody had PVMs or BVMs at home in 1993 except people who worked at TV stations or some other shit who wanted a free TV for their kids to play, and even then the consoles were still imputing via the coax in the back on RF.
S-Vid is nice, but compared to the RGB on a PVM it's near as makes no difference to composite. Nobody was modding their NES/SNES/Genesis to output RGB in 1993 either.
Nor in 2000. Nobody even gave a shit about those systems in 2000 except the ultimate nerds. And nobody was taking their gaming image quality that serious in 2000. If you were lucky enough to have a TV with an s-vid input, AND bothered caring about it, your Dreamcast was probably hooked up to the shitty-ass projection TV in your family's living room in your off-brand McMansion because your father's DVD player took up the important input(component).

You weren't getting RGB out of either in the 1990s. You also didn't own a PVM or BVM in the 1990s. It's irony of the highest order when "hardcore" retro gamers go on and on about original hardware being the only real way to play the games as they were intended while using commercial/industrial monitors and inputs. PVMs were awesome, back when they were reasonably priced. $100 for a high-quality CRT that likely has 20,000+ hours of use on the clock isn't bad. But now? $200 and the jackasses selling them don't even offer to pay the shipping.

Maybe because I'm a homeowner and I pay a mortgage and escrow and all that shit, that when I see others in my generation just tossing their monies out to people taking advantage of their naivete, I get worried. Very few people seem to understand frugality anymore. To the point where when someone says to be frugal, that person is called a poorfag. Just traded this Sony KV-21T1D for beer. It was working nicely for about half a hour until the screen started flickering horizontally and after a while it calmed and now it's sitting at half. The seller said he hasn't used the CRT for years, so I guess it has something to do with that.
Anybody tips for fixing?

The key selling point of these colorimeters is that they can utilize bundled spectral corrections for the most popular types of display technology. The only way those spectral corrections can work properly is if the underlying engineering of the colorimeter is consistent within a very low dE. For what it's worth, the i1Display Pro is the exact same meter as the Spectracal C6, which incidentally is a recommendation that Netflix specifies in their standards and practices for calibrating and profiling displays used in production. And if that's not enough, the link I previously posted showed minimal variability among 13 units purchased at retail. Hell, even anecdotally I have personally tested both an i1Display Pro and a Colormunki Display, and the resulting calibrations differed by a fractional dE. But sure, I guess a piece of paper would make me feel marginally better.

I only asked because PAL Saturns don't use composite sync, and in the case of Retrorgb's cables, they add auto-aspect ratio switching to their PAL cable which is incompatible with NTSC Saturns. You probably already know.

Other annoying obvious questions:
Proper resistor and capacitor on sync as needed by the Saturn?
Saturn and cable both work with other displays?
Absolutely sure monitor is switched to a mode that accepts RGBS, not RGBHV or RGsB, at 15 kHz?

Not sure, honestly wouldn't know what to look for here.

Saturn works fine on it's composite cable on other displays but I can't test the cable elsewhere as my PVM is the only display I have that I can hook SCART to, via BNC breakout.
>Absolutely sure monitor is switched to a mode that accepts RGBS, not RGBHV or RGsB, at 15 kHz?

The cable requirements are described on https://www.retrorgb.com/saturn.html
However the example pics on that page show a less severe issue than what you're describing.

Also, two important notes from the US seller of the PAL version of the cable linked on the above page
>For use with the European (PAL) Sega Saturn only. Uses both voltage lines in the PAL Saturn's AV port to switch to 4:3 on a compatible SCART TV. This feature is incompatible with NTSC Saturns and will produce drain on your sync signal. Please purchase the correct cable for your setup.
>This cable uses Luma to sync the image as PAL Saturns lack the csync line in the AV out.

I probably can't help beyond that, as I've never seen the issue you're having.

I have an issue I cant seem to figure out

For the longest time I had a PC HD5450 setup hooked up via VGA-BNC to my PVM using emudriver and had no issues

Did some moving around and came to the picture being offset. I did a OS reinstall and practically followed emudriver's guide step-by-step - and got to the point where my spare VGA driver gets out of sync, but I still get the same picture.

I replaced the cable today, and still have the same problem. My PS2 works fine. Is it something with the BIOS? Or is it something with emudriver that I'm missing?

Are there model lists for noobs to print out and bring with them? Because there should be, while we still have all these kids running around rescuing usable tech from the junkyard. Imagine all the gorgeous reference monitors and TVs being ignored and left to be shipped off to recyclers because everyone's only looking for muh Sonys or whatever brands are "author approved" in some dipshit faq. Visit craigslist these days and the search box will autofill Sony PVM and Sony BVM, and it's been like this for years now.. We need everyone to be on the lookout for more than just that. Lads, quick question because it's been bothering me:
My current main TV gets dim whenever the contents of the screen get "bright". The brightness returns to normal as soon as whatever bright contents return to whatever one would consider "normal"; it's like the adjustment drops out whenever it gets bright. Could it be a dead cap? There's no noise or anything like a chirping from a dying cap. It's over composite, if that matters. >you need 8k resolution to properly simulate a crt
That's when you're simulating the mask and phosphor elements. That is unnecessary when you are using a PC CRT. The only thing you actually have to simulate is the beam amplitude of the raster being drawn. CRT-Royale provides the finest control over the type of scanlines you see out of the shaders I've tested so far. They are not just flat, uniform lines but actually simulate the way a real CRTs beam width and strength will change depending on what is being drawn.

>true black
A good PC CRT has as good a black any PVM/BVM
>accurate color
see above

>you'll have to wait
Nope. I am literally looking at it right now. Could do a side by side comparison but I sold my last PVM on ebay because the value was too much to hold on to when I've got a PC CRT that will do the same job more conveniently. I suppose I could run 240p120 to the monitor and take a screenshot then switch inputs to the same thing running through shaders. But the problem there would be true 240p120 has very thick and unsightly scanlines on this monitor due to the dot pitch being very high (in TVL it would be way over 1000). With CRT-Royale you can emulate whatever TV line count you want so I can get nicer looking video monitor scanlines.

Realized there was something I hadn't tried; turned color knob off so it was grayscale; dimming still happens the same amount during the same scenes.
It seems as if I torture the set and put the vertical hold so that the picture is very slightly rolling, the dimming does not occur, only while the picture is properly synced.
Also happens no matter if the '3.58 trap' switch is on or off. Any other adjustments I would have to open the back of the TV, I assume?

It's possible to use GPU's from two different manufacturers, at least in theory. I don't think there's a way to use two different drivers from the same manufacturer though. You might get away with a low end card that still uses the adrenaline variant of crt_emudriver, and an RXvega as well, i guess. Because CRTs are made out of a myriad of different materials; metals, plastics, rubber, glass, etc, and all of those materials expand and contract at different rates when exposed to changes in temperature. When combined with the sheer weight of many of the components, as temperatures fall in your house, especially at night when heaters are usually turned down and it just gets cooler in general, it causes a lot of tiny shifts in components that are under considerable pressure. This is mostly true for any large fixture/furniture/appliance that randomly creaks even though nobody is touching it, as well as houses themselves.

>>5484002
Idk why you guys are insulting each other but native, non-native, who cares, it's nitpicking. One of the nice things about CRTs being non-fixed pixel displays is that adjusting the aspect ratio of the raster to fit some specification is trivial without scaling and not tied to any physical pixel array. Wii was an SD console released at a time when widescreen TVs already practically dominated the market, and anamorphic widescreen makes just as much sense for Wii software as it does on the many film to DVD transfers that employed the same technique. Most people would probably rather watch an anamorphic DVD on a widescreen TV (even on a fixed-square-pixel type) than the "full frame" 4:3 version of the same movie, I think. It's non-lossy, results in correct geometry (correct here meaning "intended"), and is smart use of the full resolution of the signal. Common DVD resolution was 720x480 in NTSC and 720x576 for PAL, neither being mathematically 4:3 or 16:9 but designed to be used either way. Anamorphic image manipulation isn't anything weird. It's just that resolution alone isn't enough information to define image geometry because pixels aren't always square (or intended to be treated as square). Anamorphic widescreen is "real" widescreen.

Best genesis sonic game. You can fight me on this.

>>5486641
Yep
1)Open the SCART, disconnect the wires. Alternatively, just cut off the SCART end.
2)Get a small box/project housing. An Altoids tin would work, and would also eliminate the need to solder in a few ground points by utilizing the metal tin as a common ground.
3)Order four panel-mount female BNC connectors, 75 ohm, from Mouser/digikey, and 4 BNC cables. Alternatively, order 4 RCA female -> BNC male adapters to tack on the back of your monitor, and buy four panel-mount RCA jacks. I did the RCA route for cheapness.
Order also a rubber grommet of an appropriate size for the diameter/gauge of your outer cable.
4) drill a hole in your project housing/tin that you will feed your cable into. Get your cable in the grommet, and then get the grommet into the hole. (or put the grommet into the hole, and then feed your cable through. Whatever works better for you.)
You can use hot glue instead of a grommet, but be careful if you decide to take this route to make your cable secure as possible.
Drill four more holes for your BNC or RCA panel mount jacks, probably on the other side of the housing from the cable entry.
Mount your BNC's or RCA's, solder your R/G/B/Sync wires into place, and ground all the connectors. If you used a metal housing, this is accomplished by just using the panel mounting 'nut' for one of the jacks to clamp the ground wire to the metal housing, or by sanding down on your housing a bit to get a rough surface and then soldering it down.
5) Make sure your cable on the input side is secure (that is, that it doesn't slide forward and backward in and out of the housing when pushed). If it moves around, use epoxy or some other means of securing it.

Run BNC or RCA cables from that to the monitor.

I have a pic of a cable I made for my friend's SNES, but I can't find it at the moment. It's probably on my old phone or something. I'll look for it.

Ended up looking pretty damn nice.

Also:
For genesis sync, if you choose to use the CSYNC signal directly, you should definitely buffer it somehow. I used an 74LS08, but anything would work. an LM1881 would probably provide a more pedantically 'correct' 1vpp sync pulse, but I can tell you my PVM collection has all worked fine with TTL sync from a 7400 series chip.

If you use composite video for sync like I believe your pic does, your image will shift left and right slightly when the intensity of colors on screen changes. But it will work without any chips.

If you don't buffer the raw csync line, you won't get a picture at all because the csync signal from the genesis is on an open collector output from the genesis VDP. When connected, the load from the TV will temporarily cripple the VDP.

What's working great but leaving the rolling interference?
RGB with csync through a resistor?

Could be a few things then, but a good fallback is to replace the electrolytic caps in the console and TV. If you do the TV, be sure to discharge the bigger caps before handling them.

(Ground a screwdriver in the same way you'd do it to discharge a CRT anode, and then poke both terminals of the cap with your screwdriver. And since caps can be "floating" above the chassis ground point, after doing that it wouldn't hurt to also bridge both terminals of the cap together. Just discharge to chassis first to at least reduce the 'zap-happiness,' since you really don't want to inadvertently be the easiest path to ground.)

Hooked up the isolation transformer in pic to break the loop, it worked to some degree but there is still noise (it's like a $400 transformer still online, got it for $20 used thing weighs a ton in a thick cast metal box). First:
Put everything on a single AC outlet, using power strips as necessary.
If you're tapping multiple wall outlets, that's an easy way for trouble to start.

If you still have ground loop woes:
Put everything on a common ground. If something hasn't got a ground pin, run a wire from it's ground somewhere (on the chassis, rf shielding, etc) to a common grounding point. This can be a steel plate with a nut and bolt, or an unused ground pin on a power strip. In the end it all needs to be tied to the same place as your three-prong ground pins.

If you're in europe and you have europlugs, this will be different, of course. Ground is on the outer edge of those.

Those transformers work pretty well, but they can also cause signal cutoffs at the area around 60hz (or 50hz in countries that use it).

There's a 1986 Profeel with MiniDIN S-video. Frankly I don't know if that's the answer.

BTW the story that JVC was the first to implement the MiniDIN S-video connector is apocryphal and in the past I've been guilty of spreading that info too. I've never seen any hard proof that it didn't predate SVHS no matter how much "sense" it makes that they were released at the same time. Just a period statement from JVC about the connector would do. There's also Y/C over other connectors. I don't know if some old Sony multiout version ever included it.

I wouldn't. In the past few years I've owned a Panasonic with severe ghosting issues, an Orion with linearity issues I couldn't fix for the life of me, and a Magnavox with geometry issues requiring a recap and bad convergence issues. All manufactured in the early 00s. I grew up always playing on Trinitrons and I didn't realize until much later in life just how bad consumer sets could be, and these were a big wake up call. For a long time I just assumed all CRTs would be pretty comparable to one another because as a kid I never owned shitty ones. If you insist on using a composite only set (which I honestly wouldn't blame you for, composite can look pretty damn nice on a good, well calibrated set) at least go Sony, Toshiba, or JVC. Hell, a Sharp or even a Sanyo set would be preferable.

Tune to a standard def 480i/576i OTA digital subchannel on an external tuner plugged into your displays. DVDs from your region should look a little better than that on the same displays simply because of the greater care taken during the mastering process for home video than for live broadcast on cheapo TV stations. And yes you're compromising some color detail and accuracy with S-video. But there's no reason it should look worse than TV on your low res displays unless the DVD is very low bitrate or the film was poorly transferred. You may have forgotten what the quality jump was like from VHS/laserdisc, for perspective's sake.

As for DVD vs. basic 1080p Blu-Ray, 480i30 is 172,800 pixels per field (half of a 480p frame) and 1080p30 is 2,073,600 pixels per frame. That's about 8% of BR's image data per unit of time, using inferior compression and a much smaller media capacity on top of that. Of course you'll notice something, it's a wonder the visible difference isn't as drastic as the math would imply.

Whatever you choose, just remember that hardware-accurate display for LCD handhelds doesn't have visible scanlines (GameBoy = DMG = "Dot Matrix Game"). They can still look very nice with them without losing too much detail, as most game assets were still designed the same way as for home consoles other than color palette choices.

>It's hard as fuck to get hdmi on a crt.
That's because almost all CRTs that have HDMI or DVI-D jacks are HD which aren't ideal for retro with original console hardware so people around here ignore them. And he said it's a 16:9 Sony so especially if he's in North America, it probably is HD.

I swear I used to be good at this game.
But I was never very good at taking photos of CRTs.

Some changes to beam sigma min and max created a harder, more convincing appearance. In person looks about like what I remember (real) 15khz looked like on my old SVGA workstation monitor.

What the fuck is up with these replies? No, an HD CRT is not good for 240p video. It scales like an LCD and it comes with all those problems. Might be worth it for 6th gen stuff but I personally wouldn't recommend such a beast when an LCD works better and takes up a quarter the size & weight.

There are some wonderful SD WEGA sets, they are really good as far as consumer sets go with their only issue being flat screened. Pic related, my old 27" WEGA with Genesis with HDRetrovision Component cables.

unless that's your only rgb-able system that you want to stick on component, what a nice waste of money you've got there

Not good for native 240p video. With retroarch the only thing really holding them back is the slight amount of input delay.
