Hardly a game though; more a tech demo you had to pay for.

You have to be joking. The assets themselves are fucking ugly. It's all just effects making the game presentable.

No. Next question.

It looks damn good though which is the thread topic. Also shadow of the beast is a pretty shitty game too.

Gameplay wasn't at issue here, but if we're also going for that as a requisite then most any Capcom, Konami, or Sega arcade game from '88 or '89 crushes Shadow of the Beast. TMNT arcade, Final Fight, U.N. Squadron, Ghouls n' Ghosts, Golden Axe and more are better in graphics, sound, and gameplay.

Let’s list every Laserdisc game then close the thread.

No, that has technically impressive art work at a hardware level, with no artistic direction. If you make art to wow, without cohesion, and direction, it will age poorly.

No. The average intro had better graphics, sound, and game play.

OP asked if that gloryfied tech demo was the best looking and sounding shit of the 80s. The answer is no.
Go whine about arcade hardware being more powerful elsewhere.

The assets don't exist in a vacuum, they literally exist for the sake of being scaled.

>>5488340
Well, yes. We're looking for best looking, and looking at games on powerful arcade hardware is certainly a better place to find the best looking game of the era than on some commodity home machine.

While it's trendy to call some video games 'movies', Dragon's Lair was literally a movie. An interactive one, but ultimately the same as judging graphics by cutscenes.

You know, for the longest time I thought Shadow of the Beast was just some kind of demoscene meme. Kinda like some sort of Doom deal, where the fun part is getting it to run on something you wouldn't expect. "I got SOTB to run on my Amstrad! Oh yeah? Well I got it to run on my ZX Spectrum!" Didn't even know it had actual gameplay until a couple years ago, I thought it was just about some animated sprite running on a nice parallax background.

>>5486595
It certainly made an impact. I didn't have an Amiga but knew about this game. I think it set the standard for a while. Most of the ports lacked the graphical quality or smoothness of the original so it ammo for "Amiga is better than" discussions.
