You did great touristanon. Every time a weeb massively overpays, whether it's at a brick and mortar tourist trap or an online one, it's a good thing as it injects cash into a local business. I bought basically the same thing for less than 1/8 the price a few months back so I have a pretty good idea of how much you much you contributed. Much appreciated.

I’m seeing one on eBay for $400, seems like you might’ve overpaid, but then again the one I’m looking at doesn’t include the box, so maybe it’s a good deal? Dunno much about AES other than collecting for it is expensive so I never bothered to look into or learn about them. I’ve never even seen one irl before. Aren’t Japanese games on this cheaper then the American ones?

Last time I was in Japan the bookoffs and hardoffs in Tokyo were a total scam selling at eBay prices. The ones in Ebisu seemed a bit better in pricing.

I'm looking into buying a junk AES to save a bit on cost, but I'm just wondering what I should be looking out for for the least amount of hassle. I mostly see garbled graphics or no video out. Can these simply be recapped or are there certain failures with no current solution?

You made a very foolish and wasteful purchase. You bought this item purely for flimsy and emotionally appealing reasons that show a lack of maturity and common sense.

MVS units will provide the exact same experience for a fraction of the price. Neo Geo emulation is excellent and will do it completely for free.

Imagine if there was a theme park out there which was 99.999% identical to Disneyland you could go to for free any time you want. But instead you pay full ticket price to go to the real Disneyland because "muh authenticity". Even though when you're actually riding the rides there is no way on Earth you would be able to tell any difference between the two. That's sort of what you're doing.

Neo Geo games came in to form factors, AES and MVS. AES is the home system. MVS is the arcade.

However, the hardware is exactly the same on both platforms, and so are the games. They are literally the exact same ROM files, and only a flag set in the BIOS determines if the game operates in arcade or console mode.

The Neo-Geo UNIBIOS has existed for years and allows you to switch either version of the Neo Geo hardware into the other one at will. This is accomplished via a small ROM chip that is either simply unplugged and swapped with the new one, or via desoldering and re-soldering a new chip. Fortunately, one of the cheapest and most common versions of the MVS uses the socketed chip that requires no soldering to replace.

From there the user has the choice of mounting the MVS board in an arcade cabinet, or doing a little bit of electronics work to console-ize it. The ebay pre-consoleized system prices are far exaggerated. Doing it yourself should cost no more than $50.

All together a full console-ized MVS should cost no more than $150 these days.

Or just emulate like a sane person.

lol. But as far as an MVS I concur. I have a few AESs and they just sit on the shelf because I have several MVSs two of which are consolized front loaders. The rest are in cabs.

>>5489549
Not exactly the same and some games aren't just ROMs. And you'll pay a small premium for a socketed BIOS version and a bit more of a premium for a top loader. But yeah, if you have the know how and tools you can make one for <$50. I made one with bom cost of $65.95 a couple weeks ago. Would have been well under 50 if I'd put it in a cardboard box instead of an acrylic case.

Its not a pickup, but I built a few MVS control sticks last week with some leftover lumber. Ended up using staining the oak black before putting a high gloss finish in 6+ coats. They are mirror finished, and it looks pretty sweet. They came out really good! It connects via db15 cables, which remove from the back of the sticks. They are a bit taller than I would have liked, but I used happ competition sticks and they require a bit more space than some of the other brands.

was gonna be one player but my gf told me i should make it too but i didnt have room for two rows of 3's for the buttons. way more heavy than I expected too. if i ever find the time to make a stand for it that looks okay ill finish sanding the thing up get to work on painting and get all the parts in. the buttons part is removable so you can service it easy

They are flat-backed "pan head screws". I actually wanted them to stick out. I could always go back and change them out, but It was what I had on hand, and I personally like the look. It was my first time building an arcade stick, so I didn't even know what I was doing other than using up random materials.

>>5490137
>i didnt have room for two rows of 3's for the buttons.
Is it too late to make the control panel wider? It could be done if you cut up the sides a bit. Otherwise I would have stayed course on a 1player unit. However, it is smart to have the panel be interchangeable. Once you figure out that she probably doesn't want to play it and was just being a woman, you can easily swap a 1 player setup in. If I were you, I would also make a 1p setup while you have the tools out. Is that for a 14" monitor? Either way it looks good!

And yes, woodcrafts get heavy. MDF might as well be made from steel. My sticks are only 9" wide overall and 11-1/2" wide but they are still pretty beefy.

This year I was planning on building a standup 2 player unit. I haven't decided if I will use the MVS and just make a Neo Geo, or go the mame route. Honestly I could get a MvC2 board and be content with just that as well.

I built these sticks with nothing more than a circular saw and an old aquarium stand in my back yard. I wouldn't attempt much more than what I did how I did this. I was happy to be outside and busy for a few afternoons. If you don't have a drill and a hole saw, I wouldn't fuck with it any further however. I have a small supply of hand tools, but I forget how much time I have spent collecting them over the years. Its not worth the fight to do it with less than suitable conditions.

Pretty sure that wasn't me. If I'd made a maymay my mom would have facebooked me about it. But there might be some truth behind your retardation. The last neo geo I bough cost me ¥188.
