It's highly unlikely that someone that disliked SS2 would have enjoyed SS1, considering the "reasons" you say that make SS2 a "bad game". You shit on SS2 for having features that SS1 also has, or has even "worse" stuff, while hailing SS1 as the best thing since sliced bread.

The first few levels still let you explore a bit. I thought SS1 went overboard with that though and every level was like a labyrinth.

its an ok game, i had my moments. Very flawed with bad implementations such as exotic weapons being held by a stat wall, weapon degradation and skills being useless compared to others.

While the combat aspect is better in 2, i really enjoyed ss1 more.

Play the first one, it's not only the greatest game of all time but it'll help you appreciate the second game a bit more. You can play with mouse look but I recommend giving the original control scheme a shot too, it's fun once you get used to it.
