Sonic 3 - Angel Island Revisited (or Sonic 3 A.I.R.) is a project by Eukaryot to bring the original SEGA Mega-Drive/Genesis classic into the modern age for Windows PCs by natively incorporating 16:9 widescreen, new mechanics, smooth rotation, bug fixes, pixel filters, a time attack mode and more.

The project has been in development since early 2018 and uses its own custom engine written in Visual Studio to "translate" the original games source code on-the-fly which enables it to be completely faithful to the original game in regards to details like physics, whilst adding a slew of new features that would have been impossible on original hardware.

Sonic 3 A.I.R. Features:
>100% accurate Sonic 3 & Knuckles physics
>Sonic, Tails, Knuckles fully playable, including Sonic & Tails co-op
>Widescreen display
>Additional effects like 360° rotation
>Optional high quality pixel filter xBRZ (bullshit)
>Controller support
>Experimental Time Attack mode
>Many fixes and small gameplay tweaks
>Added movement options like Tails Assist and Flight Cancel

The full release now includes all zones through Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (1994) and Sonic & Knuckles (1994) including all special and bonus stages.

Sonic 3 A.I.R. is built on top of the Sonic 3 & Knuckles Steam version. It works in some way similar to an emulator, and gets basically all of its data from the ROM that is part of this Steam release.

>So in order to play, owning the S3&K Steam game is a requirement!

Or download from the archive.org link.

Neat! Thanks!

So... is this basically an emulator with some sort of a widescreen hack fine tuned for S3&K?

It sucks that the Taxman/Stealth remaster got shot down by Sega, that one was great.

>> No.5488178

>136MB front end for a 4MB game from 1994 that's not even included.

Honestly seems like the best way to play it these days, but it's missing the nostalgia from running the games directly. I expect more fan mods and projects claiming to be the authoritative version before we get an updated release from SEGA.

I think it's a full on reverse engineered source port.

So this is for those, like, three(?) guys out there who cannot stop saying the words “original hardware” and really want to play the game Sonic 3 & Knuckles on a computer? I don’t get it.

just skimmed though a complete playthrough on youtube, it seems legit.
a long time ago i thought widescreen would be strange on these 2 bosses but its not too bad. rather than extend the launch base arena they added invisible walls. and the lava reef boss they just extended the lava. pretty basic but it works.

That doesn't even make sense. If this gets all of it's data from the rom like it's advertised, shouldn't this be fucking tiny? The coding for extra shit wouldn't be that big. It couldn't be that big.

>> No.5489086

It was "Floating Island" in the classic era, but I guess "F.I.R." isn't as catchy.

Anyway, glad to see a replacement for the highly overrated Sonic 3 Complete.

The requirement is just bullshit to try to guilt you into giving Sega some money. You can use any Sonic 3 and Knuckles rom and it'll run. Pic related is the rom that I used to test it and the game ran fine.

It was "Two Steps Forward, One Step Backward: The ROM Hack", meaning it was never going to be the "definitive" way to play Sonic 3 & Knuckles like everyone and their mother was claiming.

Literally just the lack of widescreen.

We have widescreen versions of 1 & 2 courtesy of Taxman, but his S3&K remaster got shot down by Sega, so somebody made this shitty fan game.

Does this mean it will work on other non-Sonic games? Otherwise that's some wasted effort.

>> No.5489496

Just finished the game with it. It's a pretty neat thing overall.
Liked that it was widescreen, the small QoL changes to level design and level interaction like pushing boxes and switches faster in Sandopolis Act 2/the Flying Battery Act 2 miniboss happening faster/countdown timer for the light tunnels in Death Egg being faster. It felt real good. The achivements are cute too. Liked that the drop dash was an unlock.

5489540

the widescreen is great but I wish there was a way to remove all the "air" name inserts.
like they force "air" in the zone title cards and the title screen, and you also can't display the '& knuckles" text.
another option of pressing start at the title screen taking you directly to the file select would be nice.

The good old alt + enter.

Also I noticed that the blue sphere minigame was updated. Nice.

>> No.5489648

If only they'd do this with Sonic 1 and 2 as well so I don't need to use a phone emulator. They probably won't though, and if they did they'd require you to have the APKs.

>> No.5489653

Funny to think that this is pretty much a Sonic 3 & Knuckles source port if anything. Most likely the closest we'll ever get to a Taxman-style remake. Hell, just being able to play it in full widescreen with no FPS drops is pretty damn cool. But even though, I do wish it had a couple more of the control settings that Sonic 3 Complete had like "Max Control" and the different frames of animation for Super/Hyper Sonic that don't just look like normal Sonic but yellow/silver. Having the drop dash is cool though.

Thank you very much. And yeah, the special stages look a bit shinier/spit-polished.
