Not him, but hyperbolic means exaggerating. You were exaggerating. There's plenty good modern cacowards wads that aren't made in slaughter style, like Dimension Of The Boomed last year, or Japanese Community Project at 2016. If you don't want to play any of modern wads, have you considered that maybe you don't just like Doom anymore. You propably enjoy old wads, because of the nostalgia.

Requiem is great though, I have to respect you for that.

Someone is talented if they consistently do something better than most other people do, or add their own well done twists to it, that makes it distinctly "theirs".

Okay, you are presented with the most impressive visually Doom level you have ever seen. The intended path of progression is walking 100 steps along the perfectly straight line. You cannot step off of it due to invisible walls or maybe steps just high enough you can't climb/jump them (for vanilla and jumping-enabling ports respectively). All the insane sectoral detailing and texturework exist only as a backdrop. There are no monsters on the level and naturally no secrets on the straight line you are allowed to walk along.

Don't try to waste your time sticking with the palete. Get messy. Use a black pencil with soft borders to add shadows and a think bright pencil to add details, then import to the wad and let Slade adjust the colors automatically. That's what I meant when I said "vanilla compatibility" in my previous post, it's not accurate to actual vanilla, one example is that in vanilla Cacos will not alter flying height when shot, but they do in GZDoom anyways, even with strict Doom compatibility. I also think that for GZDoom you also can't close a door while it is opening if what caused the action was a demon, but in vanilla you can. Haven't played GZDoom in a long time so you can probably prove me wrong. I can't check.

Video gay here.
Half-Life is next, I certainly put this one on hold for way too long.
Since HL doesn't require a sourceport like Doom or Quake there isn't a lot of setup to deal with, but I figured I could mention how retail differs from the source version and the modern steam release I'm not as versed on this engine so I should look into that. and also bring up Xash3D.

In any case are you anons still okay with me posting occasional progress on thread relevant video guides or should I just drop them normally on the wild from now on? I will still take suggestions either way.

So... is there seriously no way to make GZDoom switch signal output to a native 640x480 instead of just stretching to your current desktop resolution? I have a CRT and play at 640x480 160hz, this was straightforward to set up with Crispy Doom and PrBoom+, but I'm not seeing any way to do that here. I've also tried forcing 640x480 in Windows' compatibility menu but not even that works.

RedneckGDX covers RR, Rides Again, Duke3D, NAM and most likely WWII GI too
This leaves Shadow Warrior, Powerslave, Redneck Deer Huntin', Witchaven 2, Legend of the Seven Paladins, demo of unreleased game Fate and of course Extreme Paintbrawl.
Shadow Warrior and Witchaven 2 shouldn't be too hard to add, considering that source code is available for both and not counting Powerslave that's every major game.

You can't make a MELEE attack that is not aimed at crosshair, and if you manage to do it the 2D side scroller camera would freak out since it's supposed to re-orient you at the target's center axis if a melee hits.

What you can do however is to spawn an invisible "hitbox" actor that would deal damage to the target on contact.

Ok I finished Quake now. Doom was better but I can definitely see the appeal of this game now. The levels are awesomely well-designed and really fun. Level size: Progressive. It gives you the feeling of gradually rising up demonic onslaught. The downside is that a) Hell part tends to drag a little, especially second half, and b) secret levels became the biggest. Alternatively you can go with Episodic, this way map size restarts after 10th and 20th levels (i.e. the biggest are 10, 20 and 30, the smallest - 1, 11 and 21).
Streets mode: 25% of Urban levels. This makes you experience this nice mode while still leaving place for metro mode.
Linear mode: 5% of all levels. This will give you one or two maps, nice change of pace.
Liquids: Rare. This will limit your visual experience a bit, but instead gives you more space to dance around without damaging floors.
Teleports: depends on how much you like long quests and complex map that hard to navigate without checking your automap.
Steepness: if you want the feeling of grandiose, the feeling of being oppressed by towering structures, the claustrophobic feeling of giant walls squeezing you - crank it up.
Prebuilt Levels: only on you first run.
Procedural Gotcha: Final Map Only, because boss map, duh, but Icon of Sin present only on prebuilt level, and Cyberdemon/Mastermind may not appear at all here.
Layout Absurdity: play with it only after you satisfied with everything else. It will enhance that old Doom feeling when rooms by itself looks pretty logic, but overall level structure are absolute madness. Good for Hell levels.
ZDoom Vista: only on you first run. This is a gimmic feature.
ZDoom 3D Skybox: Per Theme. That means that in Theme you must choose anything except Jumbled Up and Psychedelic, best is Original-ish and/or Episode-ish (because there is generic skybox, that is fine, but tend to show too often without proper theme).
Natural Cliffs: Heaps. Even without shadows it still looks better than old plain Doom walls.
Dark Outdoors: Rare, unless you play with a mod that has a flashlight/flashsticks.
Road Markings: Yes, it's more natural this way.

Prefab Control: no need for it, unless you either a) choose Engine: Limit Removing and Level Size: Progressive/Extreme, or b) like to search for unmarked secrets.
Floor/Ceiling Styler: Curved, obviously, 'cause it's pretty.
Sky Generator: just try it and see for yourself if you like it or not. It changes the same boring skies, yes, but it's nothing too wonderful either.
Smaller Spiderdemon: check, unless you play with mods that mess with monsters. The reason is already given in tooltip, and it's very true.
ZDoom: Glaice Epic Textures: oh god yes. Sadly, it's still not working for Doom 1/ Ult. Doom, but will be in the next release.
ZDoom Special Addons: currently it's bugged (still trying to fog even if there is No, giving an error and finishing without creating WAD) and Outdoors Only looks jarred, but you can play with it and try to find most pleasing settings. This will also gives you custom loading/intermission screens.
Cages: Rare, this way you have more ammo/weapons to collect (Oblige takes into account zombies' ammo drops when counting the amount of ammo needed to beat current room).
Everything other is up to your tastes. However, I highly recommend to use Eday music for Doom 2 WAD (which is currently erroneously distributed as Edaymusic.wad) instead of any Music Swapper. There are some of the best tunes from Quakes, absolutely epic tune from Descent 2, some very nice Doom remixes, and more. The only downside is that it doesn't have secret levels themes, so you left with vanilla.

Well, you could:
1) leave the Doom community and never look back; calling it quits for good
2)Make your own set of WADs as you see fit
OR
3) move to other modding communities, such as Elder Scrolls, Fallout, or Unreal series.

>Ugly as Sin addon with hunger and frag shards turned off and friendly marine spawns (in place of marine corpses)
Makes going through vanilla Doom amazingly doable even though there some parts that require radsuit or some fast dash jumping.
Also pretty interesting when I get a notification that a marine died, wonder where that one was when he spawned and then come across a room with a couple of stragglers, a load of corpses and bullet holes everywhere.
HD friendly marines are no joke. I didn't even know they could die until I got the first notification after one that was following me took a point blank shotgun blast to the face while going to the soulsphere secret on E1M2.

For the shotgun, I really wanted to capture the kind of particular recoil impulse of a short-recoil long-gun, where the barrel recoils first, then hits the bolt, then the bolt travels backwards, and it kind of pauses abruptly as it hits the rear, then the barrel starts going back forward and the bolt slams forward.
Pic related is a pistol, but it's the idea.

The animation could probably need more tweaking, however.

Otherwise it's the same Dooms.
Try Knee-Deep in ZDoom. It's a gameplay mod for Doom 2 that reimagining Doom 1 but much more prettier (much more complex architecture & geometry) and with a lot of modern cool features (ambient sounds, for example), all the while keeping good old Doom atmosphere.

First read the OP. You need source port and the official doom wad files to play the user-made wads. Just throw the official wad files (doom.wad and doom2.wad) to source port directory and drag the user-made wad to source port. As for source port choice, it's the matter of taste.

But for the wads, I have to say that you got some quite shit suggestions. KDIZD, AA and BTSX are not for novice players. Instead you should start with classics.

Get the Final Doom. It's official expansion, that has two 32-map megawads in it: Evilution and Plutonia. Evilution isn't bad for novice players. It just goes into shovelware quality at the some point of the half way. I'm not blaming you, if you want to stop then, but you should play the first half at least. Plutionia is fucking classic. Gameplay is fun and challenging, and it even still looks good for a 1996 wad. But don't start with Plutonia, because I have to underline the challenging part. It can turn into frustrating experience, if you are not ready for it. But it's not that hard as the modern hard wads, so it's perfect transition wad to get into more difficult stuff.

And here's the community made classic wads, that are not as hard as Plutonia. This is the stuff, you want to go after finishing the old good Doom 1 and 2. Old wads but still absolutely great:
>Memento Mori
>Memento Mori II
>Requiem
>Mordeth
>2002 Doom Odyssey (rest are for Doom 2, but this is full 4 episode megawad for Doom 1)

And here's the harder classic stuff, that you definitely need to play after Plutonia:
>Alien Vendetta
>Hell Revealed
>Hell Revealed II
>Scythe
>Scythe II

2010 saw the release of new official level pack: No Rest For The Living. This is really good also, and definitely look into it. It's also more challenging, but nothing too much. We are also getting the fift episode for Doom 1 from Romero himself by the end of this month / start of next month. It has the name Sigil.

Comment gets too long, so read Cacowards for modern recs.

Realistically what it just needs is compression and reorganization, it's just bloated like modern Brutal Doom. There's assorted downloads that likely have a ton of overlap and more niche things all over the place, and many pastebins are abandoned. We're coming onto a third 'our wads' paste, even.

Valiant and Eviternity do have quite a number of new monster variants, that all fit into Doom and spice up the combat in a good way.

90s wads Obituary and Strain do also have new monsters. Though their level design might feel quite dated occasionally. Also Obituary's rocket zombie has been criticized for the fact, that they can instakill you before you find out, that they were right next to you, when you entered the new room.

Also if you are into ZDoom, Ultimate Torment And Torture adds more than 20 new monster variants.

Menu is not scaled in any way.
It's just that previously you could set custom scaling to 320x200 and it would look close in res to original.
Now you can't. Even if you make scaling 1/4 and res 1280x800 then you still would only downscale to 640x400, the scaling just outright stops working below that point and renders 640x400 no mater what actual scaling settings you set.

That's because they try to pull Q3 visuals over Doom mechanics and that does not work.
The monsters would still stiffly rotate at 45 deg, still change animations rapidly without iunterpolation unless actors themselves are heavily modified ETC.

What they should do to achieve proper Doom HD look is to use a different engine entirely, free of original's Doom stiff mechanics.

But ofc. nobodys gonna do that since it requires actual effort.

try disabling the loader if you can
Then run chocolate doom from a command prompt with the following flag:
-file mm.wad mmmus.wad
if you want to warp to a level at start (example level 7) then add:
-warp 07 -skill 4
though you could just start a game then ingame type the cheat idclev07 to warp to map 7

all of this would work with original doom2 so it better work in chocolate

Spear of Destiny is possibly my favorite FPS. Doom has more depth to it and way better map design, but there's something satisfying about the way Wolfenstein's weapons and combat feel. Even a piddly little guard sneaking up on you can kill you dead in a way that adds tension to the gameplay, but at the same time the enemies feel squishy and reactive in a pleasant way. I don't even dislike the idea of revamping fonts to make them more practical to work with and modify, in fact I think that's good, but this font looks too sharp and sterile, it really doesn't jive with Doom's aesthetics in the slightest.

It needs some volume to it, subtle shading. Doom's font looks decidedly not flat, like they're actual physical objects in some physical space, with physical light, you see it only from the front yet they look like they could be objects in full threw dimensions.

Compare to this new font that looks entirely flat and like it's from an MS-Word document.

I think its a truetype file or one of those windows raster fonts as far as the format is concerned.

its featurecreep where it doesnt belong, there's nothing wrong with scrolling menus
It should be the same pixel size as everything else in the game too. Continuity error.

They presumably had to use a higher resolution font to get it to actually localize. So there's nothing that can be done except hope that Graf gets the idea to add the option to revert it for english users.
As for the "unnecessary feature creep" it has literally nothing to do with scrolling and everything with the new font.

Download special version of gzdoom with a localization .dll which the game looks for. If its not there then the game doesnt apply those modifications.
Keeps it compartmentalized and easy to maintain.
Because you only have to put that .dll out ONCE and if you gotta make any changes to it they aren't spaghetti inside the main executable

Yes, actually.
This is for the fans of the game.
If they dont like it, then its not serving them.
And yes it does create a vacuum of demand for something that will, if things get bad enough.
Its just like economics, if you dont make something people want, they dont buy it. Except money isnt even involved, so it Really has to be something they like.

If playing videogames has thought me anything, it's that russians and arabs know enough english that they can use it as a common ground to flame eachother while someone runs down mid.

But yes, it's totally worth it to make the font worse for 99% of everyone playing the game without giving them a free choice to keep using the old one, so it's easier to localize it for players who can only understand alphacentaurian non-linear crop circle 4D code.

If you're from virtually anywhere else on the planet with an internet connection you know english too. You've got to for commerce and to be able to participate online in other regards. Sites do not just instantly translate themselves if you're using a different localization.
Its a big thing overseas to be taught english in school to be able to compete and move around internationally. Everyone (in the US) knows this.

I like Babel quite a lot. It feels like a pretty natural ramp up in difficulty compared to vanilla doom, it kicks my ass about as often as vanilla Doom did back when I was younger and inexperienced. Also I recommend the plasma SMG or pistol over the standard SMG. The plasma SMG has the benefit of being able to pepper enemies with a few shots before switching to another weapon, and the pistol is arguably a better investment for bullets until you get the chaingun.

I'd say that most people who are interested in Doom probably already know English. Beyond that, the game is incredibly straight forward and you don't actually need to understand English to play it.

However, I can see why some would like an easier way to translate it just for a wider audience in countries where people barely speak English at all.
