I am in the market for a Dreamcast. What little quirks and information should I know in advance before making a purchase?

>> No.5480213

Get the gd emu and make sure your console is the right revision. It’s easy to install too. Get the clone, I have one and have had zero issues. It replaces the failing gd rom drive and allows you to use a SD card in it’s place.

Also, don’t pull controllers out of socket when powered on. You’ll risk a high chance of blowing out the fuse that runs the ports

>>5480207
Most can run burned games but some of the ones with a 2 in a circle on the bottom can't

>>5480213
Is there a generic version of that pce ode yet?

>> No.5480236

>>5480221
Yes. It’s the cheap version 77$ or so on eBay. It’s the same thing

>> No.5480240

>>5480236
Rather it’s basically the same being a Chinese clone. Waaaaay cheaper and available and it works

>>5480213
Is the lower revisions just overall better or is there one I should be looking for?

there are several different hardware revisions of the Dreamcast available. you want to be aware to avoid the model with a big cylinder of wax in the center with a fibrous bit you light on fire; that's a candle and won't run Crazy Taxi properly

I'm so upset that tube didn't do 31khz.

If you do blow the fuse replace it with a resetable one. I'm away from home or I would link to one, but I do this on all consoles as preventative maintenance. Also you'll likely want to replace the battery with a holder and rechargeable. It's babby's first soldering level easy.

I have usbgdrom but would recommend the Chinese knockoff gdemu as it's easier to get. Dream pi is pretty bad assed, check it out. Pso is fun online.

If you're a PALfag then a PALcast is fine, just be sure to look at the very short list (like six games) of games that don't have a 60hz mode in the PAL versions, use an (burned) Action Replay to play the NTSC ones instead.

Only bringing this PAL stuff up because the pictured you posted has the blue spiral. If you're a Yank then never you mind.

Also, some games just don't fit on a CD-R and the compressed versions that do ruin them. Seriously, don't burn Skies of Arcadia, you'll have to buy it.

If you want to play burned discs, then you will need an earlier model. Look at the bottom and there will be a number inside a circle. If it is a 0 or 1, then you're good. If it's a 2, then it has no GDROM support and won't play burned discs. Luckily, 2s are far more uncommon.

Thanks I'll probably actually buy that

Why don't you research that basic stuff yourself?

BUT WAIT, there's more: Get a model 1 for GDEMU. Models 0 and 2 will not cut it. You can't install it in the 0 for a voltage difference, and you can't install it in the 2 for its integrating drive logic into the main board.

>If it's a 2, then it has no MIL-CD support and won't play burned discs

Correction for accuracy

>laughs in USB-GDROM

Though I would personally go for an actually working unit and play disc games. If you enjoy the system, perform an ODE installation later on once it wears out.

Does the Dreamcast have any compatibility with Naomi disks at all?

>> No.5482385

>>5482374
Yes. I watched a video on youtube that proved they are compatible, but yeah, you do have to do some tinkering, but they will work on it.

>> No.5482457

>>5482374
No. Naomi has faster and more ram.

You made me check, asshole
>Notice that Naomi has twice the amount of main memory and graphics memory that Dreamcast has, so ports from Naomi to Dreamcast may involve more conversion time. Also note that the Naomi board has four times the sound memory of the Dreamcast, and the reason for this is because the Naomi board is'nt meant to spool redbook audio from the GD-ROM drive.
Eh, not that I care, whatever Shove it up your ass

I have one without the top case (the entire thing including buttons). It's a shame replacement shells are a bit expensive and to be fucking fair, it already has that problem with the controllers... and it sounds horrible when reading discs.

Link to video? I owned a Naomi in the past and I find this hard to believe. Naomi GD-ROM games don't work the same as DC ones.

>> No.5484358

>>5484340
I've been looking. Now, after thinking this through, maybe or more probably I've made a mistake and got it backwards..that is, Naomi boards with some tinkering(hacking) can play Dreamcast games. It's one or the other, anons. I wish I had the video handy, but I was binge-watching Dreamcast vids and it was one of them.
