There hasn't been a switch both terms are used.
/vr/ is mainly comprised of two groups:
Older collectors, and zoomer jarpigs (younger people that got into retro games first with JRPGs because it's the closest popular to what they play in recent times, which is why you often see people making threads getting into JRPGs or into retro games with JRPGs). /vr/ has become more flooded with the latter over time hence why that appeared later.

/vg/ is full of RPG shit but /shmupg/ is the only place where you can discuss (non-versus) arcade stuff, it's pretty much what a placed called RETRO GAMES should be in my mind, like an actual /vr/

Arcades were dominant in the 80's and 90's which are the eras /vr/ is meant to cover, with console libraries (and even PC to an extent) consisting mostly of poor man's versions of what was available on the arcades at the time. Doesn't it strike you a bit strange just how little representation there actually is? It wasn't always like this either, years ago /vr/ had a bigger variety of players and more threads for arcade games which were more lively. I can't speak for everyone here, but if I can help with anything, I always help. I don't post here every day though, am not a regular, but it's one of the few 4chan boards I still visit. I've helped people get through Castlevania games, for example, I've shared strats for X68K before.
But even if a lot of /vr/ is shit, that still doesn't excuse /shmupg/'s bland memeposting, obsession with "jarpigs" and stuff. you probably know that enemy waves differ depending on how you perform, if you don't die, different enemies appear, much faster ones. Most of the times I just find myself focusing on that and I miss a lot of the moving tanks on the floor. Would it be necessary to die on purpose in some parts to avoid the rush of fast enemy waves?

Copymonkeying is retarded because they're killing a lot of shit for extra points which makes rank shoot up making enemy waves harder, the rank depends on multiple factors like not dying, how many enemies you shoot up and the different types, and sol towers/flags you uncover iirc the system's pretty elaborate actually but if you got loop 1 the second loop isn't that much worse just gets a little bit harder. You could also lower rank by destroying certain types of enemies. It's a very random game you just have to learn how to deal with the possible situations that crop up and hope to not get dicked especially by those black balls
