Playing it for the first time, really enjoying it. Firm but fair, so when you figure something out - how to avoid mind control, how to mind control for yourself, kind of thing - it feels genuinely rewarding.

Any tips for preventing a country being infiltrated? I pretty much have the globe covered in decoders, and I've shot down half a dozen floater craft over the US on infiltration missions, but the same thing happened over India a few months ago, and at the end of the month, they'd turned...

The only fake difficulty in XCOM is aliens' immunity to nighttime and their advantageous line-of-sight for detecting agents around corners.

Pic related is squares, marked X, where agents can be shot-at by unseen aliens standing on the arrow squares of the corresponding color

There is no legit way to prevent infiltration. You can delay it for many weeks by shooting down the ships, but eventually a battleship will enter the atmosphere in the mission sequence, in spite of delays, and the infiltration will instantly complete.

New alien missions are rolled at 12am when the month changes, the only way to prevent infiltration is to prevent the mission from being rolled by reading the hidden data and save-scumming.

Final Modpack makes the game a lot longer with the high level research being unlocked with captured alien leaders. It adds a few more alien races and a whole bunch of new equipment and weapons.

All in all, I prefer it over the other major mods available since it's difficulty and gameplay is comparable to vanilla without getting too over the top or too grindy, like X-Com Files.

Things I don't like are certain weapons techs, for instance, you research cannons first and work your way down to pistols, which means you will never use the pistol variants of most weapon techs, because, why would you when you can build rifles and heavies? It gets a lot easier as well in the late game because the alien's equipment doesn't scale over time (They'll always have a spread of pistols/rifles/heavies depending on the mission).

I really need to try a run of this with a focus on actually using mind power stuff. Normally by the time I get access to it I already have a squad of monsters and the avenger ready to go for the ending. Would have to stall intentionally while waiting for the psi lab to finish building then put a batch of soldiers through testing. Probably my own fault for never capturing live aliens before getting those stun launchers.

People think strategy is all about how simply moving units around and besting another player. Yet at its core, it isn't, its about dealing with uncertainty. Thats why the best strategy games have significant random elements, to create uncertainty. Panzer General (with Fantasy general), Steel Panthers, Atomic's V for Victory series, are the best examples. Most of the games people cite as "good strategy games" actually aren't strategy games at all. Chess is not a good "strategy game" neither is X-Com, starcraft or most RTS. They have their own strategy elements, but not games that require good understandings of probabilities and their effects on planning..

Anyone else disappointed by weapon choices?
You get a nice variety to begin with, but they're VERY quickly made obsolete.
You could skip laser research to get plasma straight away.
Once you have plasma researched, there is little reason to build or use other weapons.
You get so many weapons as loot, you don't need to build more.
Endgame blaster is ridiculously powerful and makes tactics less important, as you could blast everything away, or get your squad wiped by the enemy.
No snipers, no heavy machine guns, no submachine guns, no shotguns, no flamethrowers, no mortars, no grenade launchers, no anti-materiel rifle. For most of the game, you're mostly using rifles or cannons of the laser or plasma varieties. No upgrades for autocannons or rockets.
I believe the developers squandered the excellent combat system by not adding a huge variety of weaponry. Mods provide relief in this regard.

How the hell did anything I say sound even remotely buttblasted? I enjoy both classic X-com and Xenonauts. I just feel that the lore for Xenonauts makes it feel more believable. For example, if I remember correctly there's no real reason given why X-Com operatives can't use alien weapons before researching them. In Xenonauts you can pick up alien weapons on the field and use them but your soldiers' accuracy with them will be laughable due to the fact that their designs make them awkward for humans to handle and aim, therefore it's necessary to research them in order to make models that humans can properly wield. It just seems like it makes more sense from a lore perspective.

the world's nations are about as spastic and stupid as civ 3, which makes getting resources kind of hard if you don't want to spam alien weapon production. it feels like a broken mechanic but the fact they are willing to pay so much for alien tech offsets it. it's like two imbalanced mechanics accidentally balanced each other out.

aliens have the ability to sense targets around corners, whether that's intentional or not i don't know, but it gets annoying getting ambushed around corners.

It's purely random, I'm not sure if it's bug or it's intended but first ufo that spawns when you start the game can have "alien retaliation" mission, so a small ufo is sent to find your base so if you're lucky you can shoot it down before it does, but if it does find you a battleship with sectoids will come in and unless you savescum you pretty much cannot win. But you don't really need lasers or any gear, just hire lots of soldiers on day 1 and through pure numbers you should be able to win, any base defense past first in game week or so is totally winnable.
