Last thread was decent, so let's keep up the pace.

Here's some points of discussion:

1.) Project showoffs
2.) Hacking help
3.) ROM hack recommendations

A new ROM hack recommendation list will be compiled, so post your own lists below.

I've been trying out 64 hax on my everdrive and having a good time.

>Banjo Dreamie
A nicely done hack if you want some more banjo content with a challenge. I have a list of complaints but it is worth playing.

>Goldfinger64
Total conversion mod of goldeneye. All new campaign, weapons, models and maps. Multiplayer has some cool new modes. Sadly the game lags terribly on my 64. With two or thres players it's basically unplayable.

>goldeneyeX
this is a must have for goldeneye fans. It basically takes everything from goldeneye and throws it into perfect dark. You get PDs updated control scheme with and some of it's guns as well. Bonus levels from GE such as frigate and train are awesome. The best part is the full customization of matches and playing against sims.

>FzeroX
all new maps. I haven't mastered the original enough to need it but it seems to do the job.

>ocarina of time randomizer
an awesome way to breathe new life into a well worn game for me. This is probably the only game I could complete like this.

Any suggestions for quality hacks would be appreciated.

on that subject could I get someone's consensus on that? I love me some collect-a-thons (even the "bad ones" I still enjoy) but from what I've heard this one is polarizing.
I've heard it was difficult, which is fine, but having to re-collect every single music note/jiggy in a world upon death sounds really tedious. In any case, it looks like there was a lot of effort put into it.

>And what would you recommend as a good source to learn 6502 assembly for someone with prior programming experience (mostly Java but also some C)?
Google "learn 6502 assembly". No, seriously. Before you get started, you need to realize that directly interfacing with hardware at a clock cycle level is a hell of a lot different than a high level abstracted language. You won't write a few lines or a paragraph of code and display Hello World on the screen. Your 6502 code won't be 100% portable across 6502 systems without modification either. You need to pick your platform now and stick with it. I'm assuming NES?

If you want to get into ASM in general, I'd recommend going with 68000 on the Genesis instead. The NES is fairly limited for all but the most simple of games unless you want to use a mapper and learn bank switching ontop of ASM and the console hardware quirks. If you are really dead set on making an NES game go ahead, but there's easier consoles to program for.

I made a World romhack that I was so proud of 8 years ago, but the passage of time was not kind to it. It was originally a demo though, and now I'm taking the time to make a proper game out of it for the full version.
Instead of being second rate Mario fan-fiction, it'll be something completely distinct from the original game outside of the basic framework.
What's planned is rather than a bunch of small, linear levels, the game cobble each world into a Metroidvania-type structure (pic related, although only about 6 sublevels are in there as opposed to the ~30 that are mapped out).
Hopefully I can make a decent first world by the time summer rolls around.

I've been playing a lot of VLDC 9 recently.

It's... not that good. Not compared to previous VLDC entries. Several levels are kaizo difficulty, which to me should be used sparingly in this kind of project. Many levels are also just plain too long, and with only one checkpoint and pin-point accuracy required to progress it leaves you playing long segments over and over to complete a level. I'm averaging about 30 deaths per level before completion, with a long way to go on the secret exits and more difficult levels.

Last criticism: game just does not really feel like a Super Mario World game. Or even a Mario game for that matter. Would it kill the level designers to give me a fireflower? All the levels are so cramped, there's no sense of the grandeur that made SMW magic. I miss that.

I know people in this thread submitted levels to this, so sorry but it's the truth. A shame because the game is very impressive from a technical perspective.

>> No.5474181

>>5474038
VDLC 11 has "strict" 500-seconds rule, and no secondary exits at all so its huge improvement. It also limits aesthetics little(they no longer allow to merge tiles, but tile-set mixing is still allowed) so its step to better direction imo.

There was also OLDC contest(more strict rules than vldc's so it feels more like smw), but I don't think they made compilation rom of that(just individual levels).

I beat VLDC 7 on a flash cart and it is one of my favorite games ever. Really felt like a whole game made out of Special World levels. Levels that were very challenging but rarely threw things in the players face with 1/5th of a second to react to it like several levels I've played in VLDC 9. I will say there is one level watched a video of in VLDC 7 after getting to a certain preoposterous point in the level that seemed impossible, and then viewing the solution on youtube and the rest of the level left me bewildered as to how such a level was ever placed in a hack that was designed to be beatable with savestates. I "disqualified" that level and used a game genie code to pass it.

He meant this, but since he couldn't spellcheck a sm0l sentence, I wouldn't trust his claim that there are no idiots on the site.

I never said there were no idiots on the site, just that the five(?) other romhacking discord were full of idiots. Qhimm has its problems but all things considered it's the best romhack discord

As for communities in general:

RHDN:
- Good for asking for general Romhacking or system-based questions, so probably a good place to start.
- Unless you happen to be working on a game one of the few helpful active forum members happens to have worked on before, you won't get much specific help.

A dedicated modding commnity for a specific series:
- Best place to be, but beyond Mario/Zelda/Metroid/Sonic/Pokemon, not may exist.

The "fan creations" section of a series' general forum:
- Oh fuck what are you doing. Prepare to either be fucking swarmed by autistic requests or completely ignored.

So yeah, while Discord isn't ideal, in my experience getting in touch directly with people working on similar stuff has been the closest thing I've had to a community.
