In the last few years, I've actually found myself starting to pick the female characters more often than male ones - especially on MMOs.

I think it helps me step out of my own persona more for the personal RP aspect, but I don't really like playing as non-humans (unless they look really similar to humans like Elin from Tera or Elves from everything ever)

It's not even that for me, when I play as a character, I really like to step into the character's role and do things as they would. I like to choose characters that are far away from my own personality because that way I feel like less of my own mindset is seeping into it.

I'll often choose the worse option in dialog because it fits their character better.
I play Only War once a week, and I play as a reckless, illiterate man-tank with a rocket launcher. I've done things like turn relatively-peaceful negotiations into all-out combat by opening fire, I've fired rocket launchers at close range indoors while I was blinded, all sorts of things.
Terrible ideas, but they suited the character.

Also, the 'staring at a girl's ass' idea could be a bit worrying, considering that I play as an Elin in Tera (they look like little girls)

A lot of young boys play strong male characters but then grow up to be corpulent, listless neckbeards with repulsive bodies. They start picking female characters because they can no longer identify with the masculine ideal presented by the male characters.

Because I am a guy, I find female characters to be more attractive in general.
Actually, I always found it pretty gay to pick guys, especially overly muscular guys.

In every fighting games I tend to either pick at random or play with all the characters one by one.
Though I would say that my first picks are mostly Link, Capt Falcon, Kirby.

When thinking about it, I think that Link is the first choice of nearly anyone I know of.

Never play female characters unless i have to. Even then, i don't really give a shit, just rather not pretend i'm something i'm not.

I pick female characters on most games where the choice presents itself (unless the choice affects gameplay, in which case i'm pragmatist). I also probably won't pick a female on games with romance subplots, because that's just weird. Female characters tend to look better almost 100% of the time, and i get the occasional boner.

Speaking of Mario Kart, I have this weird OCD thing where I always have to pick Mario since his stat table is the most balanced or else I feel like I'm cheating. It's not like I'm one of those "final destination only" dudes, I don't care who my competitors pick or what stage we're on, but for me, I don't really feel like I "won" unless I'm playing as Mario.
