Back in the day i remember Toys-R-Us having a kiosk with a playable gameboy hooked up to a nice monochrome CRT. Not really sure how the thing output its signal, I guess there was probably like a ribbon cable or something back there soldered onto the mainboard. That thing was pretty cool, it makes me sad that i'll never see one again.

Just because an environment is bright doesn't mean the screen is lit. The situation in this pic for example, you can see how there's lots of ambient light but the screen is barely visible. Normally a backlight would solve the problem, but in a lighting situation like this the GBL's backlight would be useless, it isn't bright enough to be visible unless there's no other light around it because otherwise it gets drowned out.

Basically the GBL is useful if you're either in intense light or pitch black, but for the "middle of the road" cases it doesn't offer any advantages over a GBP.

The GBA is a bad example because being a full-color screen makes it much harder to see without direct lighting. The Game Boy has the advantage of the monochrome contrast making everything more visible with less direct light.

I would expect they never sold it outside of Japan because it would have produced unnecessary market confusion, or alternatively, because sales weren't that good for the Light given it came out literally six months before the Color and cost the same amount. I don't really know though.

>Are there people out there that mod these like that.
Yeah but I did it myself. It's a "washed yellow" backlight and bivert chip from handheldlegends. Also has a glass replacement screen. If you DIY, be sure to use diatomaceous earth to avoid newton rings (google it). The pic related has some junk on the screen, but that's not the diatomaceous earth, the screen was just dirty as I didn't clean it before the pic. The worst part is getting the old backing off, and it's doable but a pain in the ass. It's literally babbies first soldering level mod.

If you're wanting to buy pre modded just look up gameboy bivert on ebay, that usually brings up the listings. If you want a specific backlight color you could probably talk to a modder on there and get one custom made. I also believe they sell these on etsy.

Thinking about getting an SP screen mod for the advance. I've never done anything like this before. Is it easy to fuck up? I have a broken SP that I'm going to rip the screen out of so I'll only need an adapter ribbon. Are there any issues I should look out for?

>> No.5464974

>>5464787
Do you have much experience? The main problem with SPs is the hinge, though it's not as bad as on a DS or 3DS, it is a pain to handle. I'd say go slowly and make sure the ribbon is intact, be delicate with it. The ribbon cables are designed to flex, and they aren't going to shatter in your hands or anything, but don't be sloppy.

I also recommend one of those cheap 'phone repair' toolkits, they always come with some good tweezers for (delicately of course) inserting or removing ribbon cables in difficult-to-reach places.

It’s mostly if you want to use it for a lot of flashcart gaming.
Flash carts are power hungry so the AAAs get eaten up far faster than the AAs of any of the pocket’s brothers.

Knowing any soldering at all is pretty good desu, I did my first mobo swap of an N3DS with less knowledge than that, but also I didn't have to disassemble the top half for that work.

You don't need soldering for a screen swap, do you? Either way, the biggest thing I would imagine is that you'd go too fast, or that you'd be too forceful. I would recommend just watching as many guides as you can, getting the details down, and then follow along with the guides. Don't rush, don't be manic, just take it easy and breezy. Believe in yourself and have a good time with it.

The batt power is the issue.
The AAA output is so low the Pocket barely has enough extra voltage to run anything else but itself.
If you don’t install an extra voltage regulator to even a backlight is prone to flickering.
If you also try a flash cart without a regulator the thing will just straight up crash.

I have one and I hate it. I more or less rely on the fact that a lot of commercial areas have ridiculously bright lighting
Think grocery stores, certain restaurants, etc.
Generally you would play Gameboy on the go, so if you can find a place to sit down for half an hour, you'll be fine (personally I've worked in places with more industrial lighting so playing Gameboy on breaks wasn't hard at all)
