Sorry for sidetracking your thread OP. just comparing some of this to nu box art is depressing.
To answer your question I prefer the original Unreal Torunament.

Box arent hasn't been important for a long time since they were designed to grab attention and try to sell a game. The internet allowed demos, critic reviews and later youtube/lets-plays to be easily accessible, and digital distribution is the final nail in the coffin since almost all people don't care about having a physical copy (or box) at all anymore.

Does Quake 1 has waifus?

>>5451542
And as for the question: neither. I am Unreal 1 fan through and through.

>> No.5452449

UT2004's challenge maps were awesome, where you had to complete a task and the other team had to stop you, then you traded places.

The railgun turrets positioned where you had to drive a car up thin hills was bullshit though.

No, Quake 1 has no w*men whatsoever.

I don't like having to download a game before I play it. I understand all these launchers are an anti piracy measure, and its easier for you to download a game than have to go get a physical copy, but as I said its annoying having to download 70 GB for a video game and run it on bloatware. Id much rather go buy a physical copy of the game and install it myself

2004 had vehicles, which was a game-changer

>> No.5452961

>>5451552
It became irrelevant.

Games aren't sold by flashy boxes anymore, they're sold by trailers and popular e-celeb streamers.

Digital distribution is certainly a major factor but so is the fact that games have higher marketing budgets now. If by the time a person walks into a store they don't already know the game's name and you have to rely on cover art to get their attention then your marketing team has already failed.

I totally agree, though i think its pertinent to separate the importance and value of box art from the value of physical (drm-free) media. For example, I recall 5-10 years ago during the transition to mostly DRM online-auth distribution a lot of games shipped in boxes with encrypted content only unlockable online. I guess it still saves a lot of downloading, unless they decide to do a non-diff based 0-day patch where you need to re-download half the assets anyway (seems to happen a lot).
These days i refuse to buy games i can't have an unencrypted non-DRM copy of, luckily some devs choose to release games on steam without the steamworks DRM crap, so you can just zip up the /steamapp and archive it. Makes me glad i mostly play /vr/.
