Super Smash Bro.s 64 Thread

Discuss what it was like when you first got it, when you finally unlocked that last character, all the rumours you heard and how much fun you had.

I've been playing recently and I can dominate 1 vs 1 against a level 9 CPU when I play as Kirby or Samus (Samus was my main as a kid, Kirby is my new favourite now that I know all his exploits) but I don't know all the best strategies yet. I keep having trouble beating 2 level 9s on Green Greens, specifically Fox and Kirby. Fox can kill me when I'm at 90% with his upward kick move and the CPU spams it constantly. Kirby keeps throwing me to the edges of the screen with his up+a spinning attack and the odd time he does his down smash when I'm flying back to the stage. I can beat other duos but for some reason this duo is really difficult. The best I've done is get them down to a Kirby with 2 lives but I'm one life with high percentage.

As a kid I remember playing this game all the time with my friends and we would do special matches like only proximity mines or only bob-ombs or everybody as Jigglypuff.

what is this image, i was expecting some nostalgia.
anyways, it brings back good memories. its a very visually appealing game and simple to enjoy. i liked all levels except mushroom kingdom. my favourite memories are playing hyrule kingdom and against my friends which at the time loved zelda. zelda was such a cool character to face against. then there was pikachu which i usually played or kirby cuz i got my troll game on.
this game probably is the best smash, the most enjoyable target practice and story mode. i love it. every map tells a story. every map is timeless. the soundtracks are all memorable. every characters attacks are memorable, except ness. the intro brings back good memories. i wasnt fully into the game though, i only played it when friends came over or when i was extremely bored. its still nice though

I totally forgot the N64 had some weird third party controllers. I remember playing xbox games using rock band guitar controllers but super smash bros using a fishing rod controller or steering wheel sounds like a fun time with a group of friends. I remember doing team battles and it would be 3 people playing as jigglypuff against whatever character the other player wanted or playing free for all where you pick each other's characters. We used to always make each other play as Yoshi and Jigglypuff until we started getting really good with them and then it became Luigi and Donkey Kong.

I knew who Ness was when we unlocked him, but none of my other friends did. I was garbage at SSB until we got him. Then it clicked. With Ness, I basically had Pootie Tang's magic belt that gave me the power to whoop anybody's ass. So long as it was on time rather than stock. If it was on stock, I was usually first out. : (

It was weird that I first played this in a hotel room as a kid. They had one of those lodgnet things you could pay to play n64 games for an hour. The selection was pretty good if I can remember, at least 20 games. It was cool that I was able to beat the classic mode in the time I was allowed to play.
Later I got it on wii virtual console, which was a nice version
Now I play it mostly on my real n64 and everdrive.

>time battle
None of my friends ever played on time battle, and I played this with a lot of people. I only ever heard of people playing timed battles when brawl came out and I was reading a magazine about strategies in tournaments and running out the clock lol.

Did you guys ever do anything special with only one kind of item or one kind of character? It sucks being older now because I can't play on one screen with my friends as frequently as we used to.

What rumours did you guys hear for unlocking characters? My one friend had an older brother who kept feeding us rumours for games and he's like 'yeah you gotta be single player on very hard mode with 1 life and not die' and we finally did it but didn't unlock anything I'm pretty sure. Turns out you just had to beat single player on normal mode with 3 lives and not use any continues.

Nothing special, no. We just beat the shit out of each other and made stupid teenager jokes about the characters, like Captain Falcon being a pedophile. It started with friend1 using his 'show me your moves' taunt then me using Ness' 'okay!' taunt and friend2 saying "c'mere, little boy..." in the creepiest, most child molester-y voice possible.
As for rumors, no on that, too. We just played and unlocked characters as we went. Took a while to get Jigglypuff, son I think friend1 looked that one up.

As for time battles, my friends hated playing time with me due to the aforementioned whoop ass I would lay down.

Rumors=None, Story=bet ur ass

We all had that friend, the one who has the fancy console and you're friends with him because of it. I was there for a sleepover and he introduced me to SMB64. He and his younger brother were pretty good at it and enjoyed slapping me around like a bitch for the night, they had no idea how competitive I was. Next day I went home pissed and on the way I stopped by the store and got it myself along with the console. Practiced like mad for two months but he was none the wiser.

Like half a year later I innocently ask him for another round of Smash. Unaware of my training he agreed, snickering like a virgin about to poon. I went there and made him and his brother my bitches. That day I walked out a redeemed victor and confirmed pro player, moved on to Melee. It was literally the last time I ever heard from him again.

The guy was a nerd (his brother too) and he had like the school's best GPA. I couldn't give him the honor to be the best Smasher in the neighborhood too.FYI he played Fox and his brother Yoshi. Too bad they ended up as Captain Falcon's punchbags.

>be at college
>smash tournament announced at dorms
>already got good practice with melee against bunch of melee friends kicking my ass in that game
>as long as their not there I may win, can probably beat most people at this game
>get there and seen a few people I know
>scrubs, easy win for me
>we get to the tv
>look for gamecube
>see n64
>give eachother worried looks
>RA shows up with guy who brought original smash with the 64 and controllers
>none of us have played
>warm up for a few minutes before it starts
>never had an n64, not used to clunky as fuck controls, worst analog
>wheres my dpad? Oh yeah, cant even use that
>everyone is floundering, no one can learn controls
>couldnt get link to do shit, go DK for tourney cause if everyone's bad at least I can out space them
>do pretty well
>end up beating 6 people in a mix of 1v1s and 1 free for all
>now I have to face the guy who brought it all
>great, he actually knows how to play the game
>mains kirby
>gets me with up tilt and dair drill combos
>closer than I thought, but he still wrecks me
>get 2nd place
>get a few DVDs and a bunch of popcorn and candy
>quite a great time

Turns out my next roommate would be cousins with a top smash64 player, and he gets me to play a bit more and since I've been to a few tournaments, including shine (I'm from mass). Could go more about 64 but it's interesting to me I've literally only seen the competitive side of it, didnt grow up with the fun side.

>>5432967
I had the opposite happen to me with Melee. I was the best out of my group of friends and one friend was super terrible and I would go easy on him. This was around the time the wii was out but it was the best game to play with a group of friends. He ends up getting a wii and a copy of smash and practicing for 6 months straight and we all have another group battle and he destroys us. I remember him talking about going to competetive meetups but I thought he was just casually going. Now he's one of the best in our area but that was like 4 years ago that I last talked to him. Maybe 6 years ago is when I started playing Smash 64 again and we were quite even when playing it even though he was able to transfer a lot of exploits and moves into it. For some reason he always picked Yoshi and it made it that much worse when he won.

The AI on hard mode is interesting. If the CPU gets the laser gun they shoot and jump and shoot and jump and carry you up to the top of the screen. Fox will get you into the air and keep spamming his up kick. Samus keeps charging and rolling if you keep distance from her but do an attack.

I mean, I had parents who didnt want me playing vidya. I was born in 92, so I still had 90s stuff at friends houses, but I didnt get a console till 11 when I got the gamecube, and even that was a few years after it came out. Still, I played the shit out of GC split screen even for the next 10 years straight. I got the ps3 later (the launch kind which had ps1 and 2 compatability), but the split screen from GC was just too good. Had friends over every week for mariokart, kirby's air ride, monkey ball and the like.

My childhood wasnt completely vidya free though, my grandma got me a gameboy pocket and for some reason my parents gave that a pass cause it didnt hook up to a tv. Then the gbc, GBA, ds, still had a lot to fill those nostalgia reserves, just didnt have n64 (played a lotta ps1 through my ps3 tho).

Brawl- not gonna lie I have no clue

Its franchising, nintendo caught onto it way earlier than disney/marvel did with the mcu dominating anything else in theaters. People play games, see that character in smash, and they wanna play that character in smash, or maybe against that character, but the whole franchising aspect is simple but brilliant on Sakurai's part. Half the debate over smash is who's the best/worst, and the other half is who's gonna be in smash next, and that hype for who's in smash is been talked about back in 2000s as well, just among friends before the internet got so connected.

The fact that that one idea could generate hype over that possibility, even after all these sequels, shows how good an idea it was.

Yeah that was a big thing when I played with my friends. Usually the person who owns the game has an unfair advantage so in our group of friends we would try and handicap that person like with Super Smash even though we all owned it (except the one friend who was terrible and then became god like) I let them choose who I would be as a character to even the playing field or I would say we could choose the person next to us and I would give my friends more of an advantage but give an excuse like "Oh you have to be Marth which sucks because he hurts himself with his attack". Nothing will compare to playing Smash 64 with my friend and his brothers though, that felt magical especially after school when we would be waiting for his older brother to come home from highschool so we could play and we would be practicing so we could team up against him and think of cool new game plays we could do.

I thought it was weird how people played Smash 64+Melee because it was popular and fun but hadn't heard of a lot of the characters and as a result bought those other games to see what their games were like. Anon again who grew up w/out consoles. Even though I didnt have shit except for gbc, GBA, and just played most 64/playstation/xbox shit at friends houses, I still knew all the characters by the time melee came out. Big fire emblem fan and even though 7 was the first game here I still knew about it at 10/11 and knew it wasnt the first title, knew marth was from the first game. I'd get into arguments all the time with friends who'd say that marth was a princess cause of the tiara (like how shiek looks somewhat masculine in melee but for the fans who know who she is), and I'd argue all the time it was his sisters/moms tiara and that hes a prince, it would get me so heated when friends' bullshitting would be taken more serious than someone who actually knew that shit.

But I wouldn't consider myself the average Nintendo fan, like I didnt even get 1st console till 12 and I made up for having those games by constantly researching stuff online and being knowledgeable in the days before everything had a wiki.

Also tfw you are a big fzero fan and everyone acts like falcon is a smash character cause it's such a dead/underplayed franchise.

I had one friend like this in elementary school and one co-worker like this now (age 31). The elementary friend would talk about Pokemon stuff and stuff regarding the Wii before it came out and we all thought he was crazy and making shit up and other friends would add their bullshit to what he was saying to make it sound believable and we would believe the friend making it up until several years later when we realized he was telling us the truth but to be fair he would always say "My friends dad" or "My cousins friend" when telling us these things. The guy I work with tells us about random super specific facts about certain (non videogame) things and we usually look confused and play along until researching it a couple days later and going "oh wow you were telling the truth". It doesn't matter how old you get, there is always the "my dad works at Nintendo" kid/man/woman and sometimes they are actually telling the truth...

I got this for my birthday in 1999, which was right after it came out. Unfortunately, that same day we were leaving on a family trip to New York City, so I packed my system in the bottom of my duffel bag along with the game so my brother and I could play in the hotel room. Unfortunately, while we were visiting central park to kill time before we could check in, some nigger broke into our car and stole everything, so I lost my N64 and a brand new copy of Smash, along with my Game Boy and Pokemon Blue which I was playing on the ride up, and I had just gotten all 151 Pokemon. Fucking sucked.

Anyway, once I got it replaced, I loved the game. What's funny is how little hype I remember this game having. Like, it got announced and shown off with such little pomp and circumstance for the kind of long-awaited event that it was. It ended up really taking people by surprise, I think. It was just a different time, when gaming "journalism" was much more subdued, and the culture was more about playing games than tweeting/hyping/speculating about them. Played a ton that summer with my best friend, we did so many 99 stock matches. He's actually visiting this weekend, maybe we'll fire it up for old times' sake.

Did you spot Ridley in Brinstar?
And yeah, De De De is also on Dream Land, but he appears more frequently.

melee was way better than 64 imo
64 is so slow and clunky compared to melee

Melee should never have been as good as it was for a rushed launch title. The amount of improvement from 64 to melee from any other studio would have required way more than just a year and a half. As great as 64 is, it's still molasses and super floaty compared to melee.

i remember being so blown away at how much of an improvement Melee and Rogue Leader were over their n64 prequels. shame not every series made quite as nice of a transition.

Yeah the Melee sequel improved on everything. The amount of little secrets and tricks that it contained was amazing and years later we were still finding them. It had so many of those secrets that were "my dad works at nintendo" tier. Like using Fox or Falco to call in an air strike.

For a first in the series 64 is surprisingly good. The recovery of each character is kind of crappy (you need to actually touch the ledge instead of being within an arms length) and a lot of attacks are overpowered but it's still really fun.

I don't think many people understand how big the gap was between 64 and Melee, it's basically night and day with those two games. Since Melee, it's like every Smash game just improves from Melee, but jumping from 64 to Melee makes me wonder how much work did they put in to put all that content in the span of two years.

>We had absolutely no idea who he was
you and everyone else. i originally thought he was paperboy.

it is kinda funny how nobody really know knew about earthbound (or fire emblem outside of japan for that matter) until smash bros.

>>5432592
me & my bro prefer timed but most of our friends prefer stock because "muh killstealing" even though the last one standing in stock was usually the guy who sat in the back and finished the surviving players off.

Same bro. I was the only one of my friends who had even heard of Earthbound, much less played it. I also quickly became an annoying Ness main.

Is it worth trying to main Ness? He does some good damage and his grab is pretty powerful but his Up+B can be frustrating to use. I normally use Kirby or Samus but decided to use Jigglypuff and her Jump Down Kick is pretty based combined with her recovery.

What strategies do you guys use and with what characters?

Ness's aerials are pretty great. You could pretty much spam Dair

I didn't get him at all back in the day when I unlocked him. I also ignored him on Melee.
It wasn't until I played Lucas on Brawl that I understood the aerial tricks and how you can use PK thunder effectively, hitting yourself to go bullet-man against enemies. Lucas' PK Thunder maneuver is slower and easier, Ness takes more time to get used, especially on 64, but it pays off when you pull it.

>> No.5449254

>>5449234
I was playing with him a bit today and his PK Thunder actually has a lot of range, you just have to make sure you get the correct angle. I'm not skilled with his aerial attacks yet but PK Fire followed by a baseball swing seems to do crazy damage and knock-back, now I just need to time the down attack to finish them off.

Kirby feels like the easiest and most OP character because I can always go back to him if I'm having troubles fighting a group of CPU fighters and win every time. Is he generally seen as the easiest character to master? I was having no luck using Yoshi but his aerial down smash (the fluttering feet) can do close to 40% damage if every hit connects but I can't do much else with him lol.

I only knew of Ness because Nintendo Power had a really long feature on Earthbound when it came out. It took me a bit to remember where I'd seen him before.

My brother and I played this game to death, until we had so many inside jokes.
>law and order
>it's not a good day to be samus
>secretly good with yoshi
>weak knees
>you have disgraced our dojo
>priority
>Jigglypuff exercises
I don't think there's any game I have more vivid memories of than this one.

Hey, some of those are actually pretty good

I like the sound effects. Every punch sounded like it hit like a truck. Also the characters had better voice clips. Captain Falcon sounds like he's really putting oomph into that Falcon Punch compared to the limp wristed shout they've been using since Melee.

Anyway, this is the game that converted me from a picky faggot that only played games based on cartoons I watched as a kid ( which happened to include Mario and Pokemon ) to a full blown Nintendrone and I have no regrets.

Yeah kirby is definitely OP, which I'm actually happy with cause hes one of my favorite nintendo characters, def my fav in 64, and in the other smash games hes just so much weaker so this is the one game hes super strong in.

Pikachu is actually up there with kirby, and when you figure out pikachus recovery its absolutely ridiculous compared to the rest of the cast, but he takes a bit to master so while he and kirby are at the same power kirby is just easier to pick up and learn.

Falcon is a close second place to those two, and in the competitive smash scene the three characters actually serve as a rock<paper<scissors matchup where falcon is weak to kirby, kirby loses to pikachu, and pikachu is weak to falcon. It's not down to a T but that's usually how the matchup goes.

I personally like kirby, falcon, jigglypuff, and link, and my skill with them is probably in that order as well. I'm not good enough to go to tournaments but I can hold my own against friends who do actually play competitively.

It was definitely the first game that got me 'hooked' and had me staying up all night with friends and we never got tired of it.

I love how unbalanced the characters are. Yoshis swallow attack that turns you into an egg keeps you in the egg longer than in later versions and Jigglypuff's sleep attack actually keeps you asleep long enough for her to use her Down+B instakill on you. Samus and Pikachu can shoot their projectiles across the screen and the same goes for Fox.
