"Boomer" is short for "baby boomer" which is a term coined by Daily Press in the 60s.

It's a term used to describe anyone born during the Post-WWII baby boom.

I'm 26. First generation I played was the N64, and it wasn't until I was about 18 or so did I start exploring older titles. Turns out I didn't just like my video games, but I liked video games in general. My favorite game Chrono Trigger was an SNES game, and I didn't play it until I was 21 years old. I didn't realize so much of /vr/ was significantly older than myself.

I play my fair share of new stuff, but retro games are comfy and I enjoy the relative simplicity of them. IMO they're much better about fostering escapism than modern games are.

I thought Sega was about as big as nintendo and would be successful for many years instead of the 6 year period they had. Seeing multilayered scrolling for the first time was stunning and no one made a big deal about the genesis megadrive having 64 colours until dkc where sega pretty much gave up. I was too young to see much of c64.

My powerhouse today is used for Honey Select and such (have a wild guess).

Kind of interesting to know there's a lot of people around my age on here, I always assumed everyone was about 5 or 10 years older.

Also, how do I get out of this mind set that I'm in where I want to play games but I never do either because I can't decide, or because I'm so exhausted from work and school, or I'm just drunk or hungover (I know that last one is an obvious fix but alcoholism is a bitch)

The media and people in general keep using "boomers" to describe old people, since most of the old people alive right now literally are Baby Boomers. So now there's a strong implicit association between the phrases "baby boomer" and "old person". At the same time, 4chan itself has gotten so old that the difference between oldfags and newfags is an entire generation; Moot is about 30 years old, and at least someone reading this is half his age.

An anon on 4chan took advantage of all this, making threads across a bunch of different boards about "30 year old boomers" with a wojak edit to match.

Same age, and also had an NES growing up, but no SNES. We had a PC for some games, and Gameboys, and eventually we got an N64, but we had very few games for it, having only Super Mario 64 and Goldeneye for the longest time.

In the early 2000s, my brother showed me emulation, and not only did I get to play a lot of NES and Gameboy titles I missed out on (and first playing Pokémon like this, before getting a real copy), but now I could play SNES games, and I was so blown away by the graphics, I thought it looked better than N64.
I had never played games like Super Metroid or A Link To The Past before, nor Final Fantasy 4, Mystic Quest, Super Punch-Out, or Super Streetfighter 2 Turbo

For actual PC games, Starcraft, Diablo, Warcraft 2, Baldur's Gate, Worms 2, and Doom 2, were constant favorites.

well, I grew up with C64>A500>A1200>PSX>PC>PS2=Dreamcast>PC and now I have some ooold laptop and dont give a fuck about all those new RTX2080,I9-9900K 4K 144Hz,VR, second mortgage for playin some shitty MMO FPS Minecraft.

I believe majority of people are here for ~1990-2005 period when biggest leaps in gaming were achieved , it really doesn't matter when you were born, if you were exposed to gaming at that period you will be an believer for life.

I honestly believe they will mention 199#-200# period as Golden Age of gaming/hardware/graphic leaps in IT history books.
We are on tail end of probably historical IT shit, you just dont notice that as you live it.

That's why you have so many old(er) folks here, if you grew as did technology of that period, you are hooked for life, astronomical amounts of progress happened so fast, in 2 year period you could have stuff leap from 8-bit to 16,32,64..
From 16 colors to 16 million colors, from 2d 320x240 to 3d 720p.
It all happened in around 10 years, so if you got your first "thing"(whatever it may be=C64,Nintendo,PSX,PC...)
as an 10 year old kid, as 15 y/o everything jumped for 4 levels.
Imagine jumps from Super Mario to Doom to Quake to Morrowind , who lived as those things went by could hardly stay
unimpressed.
But as kid you didn't knew you were in Golden Age of humanity as IT renaissance happened, you just had a great time.
Thats why passion for gaming is probably for life, but today kids are born with smartphones, internet, they are born in future, but we literally lived it as it happen'd and it was really great.

well said, perhaps nostalgia-tinged, but speaking a real truth about what it was to experience technology during that period of profound, rapid growth. Especially significant, I think, is the transition from a pre- to post-internet society, going from where most things were non-internet to where most things involved the internet. That one will be interesting to explain, the best I could do is "imagine if you could do many of the things you do now, it just took longer, but you were used to waiting".

O,don't let me start with 56k all nights because back then internet was tied to your phone landline and you paid it by the hour(at day it was expensive as shit and someone always had to use the phone so you had to become vampire).

Flat internet was an pipe dream and T1 lines were for celebs and companies,
then ISDN, then ADL .. etc...

I remember having first REAL smartphone(Nokia 7650) back in 2001 and running Doom on it(it was fucking mind-blowing), mind you, first iPhone was released in 2007 and people who were on "cutting edge" were really like:"Meh, WTF Apple, really nothing new or revolutionary..".
Sony Ericsson had an smartphone with touch(touch and stylus) back in 2003 you could play any emulator relevant back then so we saw iPhone as just another small thing but mediocre masses who were not in "the know" were so
struck by it.. That kinda annoys me, history will remember Steve Jobs as some IT genius or whatever but he really didnt do jack shit .

Now, to really know this, you had to live thru that period..(sorry to sidetrack a little but it's funny to see how actual history becomes distorted in such short period of time)

Been playing retro games since I was a wee lad, had a NES and SNES at age 10, always biked around the neighborhood on Saturdays when all the yard sales were happening to find old games back when you could score a console and a box of games for 20 dollars. Don’t like new games. They disappoint me. Big fan of Spyro 2 and 3, resident evil, and einhander. And I definitely think 6th gen should be included for discussion here. Back in 2008/2009 I figured out how to use emulators and blasted through a bunch of SNES, NES, GBA, GB games. I vividly remember playing the punchout games and the various mario games. I also dug up a bunch of obscure games, well some weren't really that obscure but just less known.

There might be some merit to that. I'm 26, the first game I remember playing was Vectorman, and I'd say my fascination with retro gaming has always centered more around gen 5's take on 2d and 3D offerings rather than much of gen 4, until recently.

Yeah, I remember discovering emulation around 1999 or 2000 on a CD from my relatives. It had Nester on it and a bunch of NES games I'd never played before, like Contra, Blaster Master, and Castlevania. I think it was only a year or two before that I stopped playing my NES (I don't remember if I lost it or what).

I keep seeing people insist that the NES was buried when the 16-bit era came along, but it seems like a lot of us were still playing it. I don't know if it's a "flyover country" thing or what.
>>5445698
That's kind of pushing it. I'm old enough to remember renting Super Nintendo games and occasionally buying them before places stopped carrying them in favor of Nintendo 64 games. I do seem to recall seeing KB Toys selling a few Super Nintendo games a year or two after the Nintendo 64 was introduced.

I recall having every single pokemon game for the damn thing. Thank goodness flash carts exist or I would be shelling out to fucking resellers now

I had good times with Ruby back in the day.
If I didn't have a PC to emulate with, I'd almost consider getting a flashcart for mine.

i'm surprised literally not one person in this thread knows about the 30 year old boomer meme. really shows how sheltered this board is from the rest of 4chan

>> No.5456292

24, balding and feel like a boomer compared to most of 4chan and any “”gaming”” communities. It’s worth considering there’s probably a number of underages here who won’t post, so the ages in the thread will skew higher than reality.

Not to barge in but isn't your link proving him right? September 1993, the time normies started coming in droves, consistent with his post right? Huge amounts of normies were online by the late 90s. Professional class people all had computers by the 2000s, even if they didn't use them that much yet, while I would say 2005+ is when all the bluecollars finally started to figure it out.
