At the time I was blown away. Best looking game in existence. Amazed by the plot.

I'm 26. First generation I played was the N64, and it wasn't until I was about 18 or so did I start exploring older titles. Turns out I didn't just like my video games, but I liked video games in general. My favorite game Chrono Trigger was an SNES game, and I didn't play it until I was 21 years old. I didn't realize so much of /vr/ was significantly older than myself.

My parents had their own 2600 which I played in my earliest years. I got an N64 and Gameboy Color for my 7th birthday, and after my parents divorced his new girlfriend had a Genesis that I played alongside my 64.

I play my fair share of new stuff, but retro games are comfy and I enjoy the relative simplicity of them. IMO they're much better about fostering escapism than modern games are.

I remember atari then the sms and nes. Computers were for rich people. Majority of adults didn't play games except for a couple who were into the pc scene. I thought Sega was about as big as nintendo and would be successful for many years instead of the 6 year period they had. Seeing multilayered scrolling for the first time was stunning and no one made a big deal about the genesis megadrive having 64 colours until dkc where sega pretty much gave up. I was too young to see much of c64.

37. My parents were quite anti video games during my childhood but thanks to the holy communion i got a GameBoy the year it was released here in Germany.
It got Tetris in the box (of course) and i got Solar Striker with it. Enjoyed a lot of games with it. Never had any kind of computer aside from the so-called IBM compatibles. 286, 386, 486, Pentium 1, Pentium 2. After that the magic wore off.
My powerhouse today is used for Honey Select and such (have a wild guess).
Console wise i had PSX, N64, Dreamcast as far as the definition of retro (here) goes. Today i play mostly stuff via MAME, Snes9x and KegaFusion.

I'm 28, but I still play a lot of modern stuff.

Late 20s to early 30s seems to be the main demographic. You can usually spot the kids and foreigners by how they type.

In the early days of /vr/ there were more crusty oldfags but they're all gone now and it's just people born >1995 who came here because of e-celebs.

Same age, and also had an NES growing up, but no SNES. We had a PC for some games, and Gameboys, and eventually we got an N64, but we had very few games for it, having only Super Mario 64 and Goldeneye for the longest time.

In the early 2000s, my brother showed me emulation, and not only did I get to play a lot of NES and Gameboy titles I missed out on (and first playing Pokémon like this, before getting a real copy), but now I could play SNES games, and I was so blown away by the graphics, I thought it looked better than N64.
I had never played games like Super Metroid or A Link To The Past before, nor Final Fantasy 4, Mystic Quest, Super Punch-Out, or Super Streetfighter 2 Turbo

For actual PC games, Starcraft, Diablo, Warcraft 2, Baldur's Gate, Worms 2, and Doom 2, were constant favorites.

Been playing retro games since I was a wee lad, had a NES and SNES at age 10, always biked around the neighborhood on Saturdays when all the yard sales were happening to find old games back when you could score a console and a box of games for 20 dollars. Don’t like new games. They disappoint me. Big fan of Spyro 2 and 3, resident evil, and einhander. And I definitely think 6th gen should be included for discussion here. Especially considering that the 6th gen turns 20 this year

Back in 2008/2009 I figured out how to use emulators and blasted through a bunch of SNES, NES, GBA, GB games. I vividly remember playing the punchout games and the various mario games. I also dug up a bunch of obscure games, well some weren't really that obscure but just less known.

It had Nester on it and a bunch of NES games I'd never played before, like Contra, Blaster Master, and Castlevania. I think it's great when the younger generation gets into older games. Many of the older teens I know play nothing but what is the most hyped new release at the moment although the same can be said of many older gaming fans as well.

Almost here. First console was Atari something (2600?) but the one I really really spent time on was a Famicom clone and then a SNES. Never got a Genesis/Megadrive - I just played those at makeshift "arcades" where you could rent a system to play for 15 minutes at a time.

Oh, forgot. Was one of the few kids with access to actual PCs (rich grandparents/uncle). So also got to play Apple II stuff (Mario Bros, Ghostbusters, Joust, Lode Runner mostly).
