Me and my brother bought this with our xmas money, back when Woolworth was still in business in the early 90's. We had a love hate relationship with this game.

I had actually saved up a ton of money and bought myself a Game Gear, too. I recall it was at K-Mart and all they had for games was shitty sports crap and pic-related, so rather than be patient, I just bought this. It was kinda fun, but I never played it much once I got some better stuff.

If used games count, I think I bought Back To The Future for NES before this, though. I got it used from my local video rental store, they were selling off their less-popular NES games to make room for SNES games, and I rode my bike there and spent $15 of my own hard-earned money on that POS.

The first Red Alert.

I remember I had delivered newspapers for weeks to afford it (the pay was really bad and the game was really expensif, but I lucked put and got it in a bargain bin sale a few years after launch), and when I got it I felt I had reached adulthood, even though I was still in my early teens.

"Sailing" for the C64. I bought the tape on a school trip, when I didn't even have a C64 yet. Of course the game was shit, but I guess most peoples first games where, when you didn't read the magazines yet or just picked a game by sheer luck. Despite being really shitty, it had pretty much convincing water "physics" for an 8-bit game.

Exactly, but unfortunately it just isn't.
The protagonist's sprite is freakin' massive, you move slow as molasses and jump as weakly, and attacking makes you stand still, so combat is clunky, uninteresting and repetitive. The only items you get are just damage upgrades to the sword and bow, with everything else basically functioning as keys, unlocking places, enabling bosses to be fought, etc, so there's none of those gameplay mechanics as in the likes of Zelda games, where items items work as tools to open up the gameworld and adding new ways of playing it. No, it's just side scrolling simplistic hack 'n' slash and arrowy-shooty business ad nauseam. And navigation, while definitey not *the* worst, could be more intuitive. The game's basically a tedious series of fetch quests interspersed with the occasional boss simple-patterned sluggish fight. And the worst part of it is that's it's not actually that bad enough to reach those comedic so-bad-it's-good, or even entertaining, it's instead thoroughly mediocre and forgettable.
Well, except that I do remember it from it being the first game I bought myself and was sorely disappointed.

A $1 copy of Half-Life GOTY on eBay, because the Steam version used to have crappy 56 kbit/s MP3s (now LAME VBR -V2) as soundtrack and I wanted to rip better ones.
It turns out virtually every CD in existence seems to originate from a master with scratched audio tracks.

Wasn't aware you wanted story time. Fine, here goes: I did odd jobs as a very young kid for an old blind German lady on my block. Grocery runs (on foot, at 10 years old), picking up medicine, picking up and dropping off books from and to the library for the blind in town*, going with her places and just generally keeping her and her dog company.
She liked me because she hadn't heard a young voice speaking German in decades and my mother's Swiss so we spoke Swiss German at home. She teased me on my dialect in a nice way.

Anyway, she gave me money from time to time, though I never expected to get any. I was just happy to have someone who reminds me of my own grosi** who died two years before we moved to the US. And I used the first bit of cashola I felt obliged to keep (she said she'd be insulted if I didn't take it this time) to buy PS2 mentioned in >>5445569

B&T was bought at a meetinghouse fleamarket. I took some money out of the paper maché piggy bank I made out of a balloon and five wine corks by cutting into the belly. $8, IIRC.

* the library had a weird, bendy sculpture out from that resembled a twisting and turning hand rail. looked a lot like the pic I posted. at first, I wondered YTF a library for blind people would have a sculpture, then I laughed imagining the blind holding on to it like a handrail and walking along it, lost for hours.

** maybe it's because I lost my own grandmother, but helping her out pissed me the fuck off cuz I know she had a daughter and a son and they literally never came to see her or even call the house and here we are, my family, strangers who cared more about her than her own children and grandkids.
goddamn, I hadn't thought about her in years and I'm literally holding back tears thinking of how fucking angry I still am at her kids now. to abandon a parent is one thing, but one who's sweet, kind and fucking blind? i want to believe they were just busy or something and no one could possibly be so cruel.
