I finally got to play Attack from Mars, Medieval Madness, and Pub Champion. All great machines with fun, clear rules. I'm really not digging the new Wizard of Oz and Pirates of the Caribbean machines. They are really big and have so many modes on them it is hard for a beginner to play or even understand what is going on without sinking $20 of quarters into them. They also have really wide ball drains which require you to be tilting.

I can't really speak for WoZ since I haven't played one in a few years now, and I just haven't had much playtime on JJP PotC(doesn't the compass always point to the highest-scoring shot you can make at any given moment?), but I have to say from my experiences on Hobbit that JJP does a pretty damn good job attempting to educate the player on what you're supposed to shoot for during modes. Shots to aim for were very clearly indicated and had numerous callouts, not to mention the book screen which always had the mode timer and "next shot" objective as well as mode progress displayed.
At least it's not like modern Sterns which have almost no feedback whatsoever on whether or not you're doing anything right.

Someday I'll be top ten in my state.
Thoughts:
Lexy Lightspeed and the P3 Multimorphic system are great. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Er4Pc7PkrSk
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4x2PcpdsBY

The Room System in Alice Cooper's Nightmare is really interesting. See attached pic. You start at the bottom center, and it takes 2 left orbits and 2 right orbits to qualify a mode. Each orbit you shoot will progress you on the map-diagram at the bottom-center of the screen. You start at the bottom of the map. Left orbits send you NE, and right orbits send you NW. Each room of the map has different rules and objectives to it, so it matters what order you shoot the four orbits in. After each mode you go back to the bottom of the map.

I don't know if any game has ever had something where the code was actually spatial in this way, instead of just using spatial analogies like in the maps in WoZ, Hobbit, and PotC18.

My favorite tunes are also from my favorite table "Bride of Pin Bot". I just love those futuristic tunes, sound effects and voice samples on this Metropolis inspired table and also it's metallic look. Some people don't like the machine for it's repetitiveness gameplaywise, but of all the Pin Bot Tables I prefer this one over the other two any time. But I heard this table was a bitch to keep in shape because of all the moving parts.

You can still show video footage, but it has a nice low re solution display so it looks unique. Like when it does the long cycle passing through the women's spread legs you almost can't tell it is repeating. Reasons why Sonic should have a pinball machine:
1. Sonic is all about "pinball physics", or so I'm told
2. Sonic has a lot of great sound effects that would be suitable.
3. The same goes for music.
4. Sonic has bumpers, ramps and other things that could be directly translated into a pinball machine.
5. Imagine if the left return ramp on White Water was in a Sonic game. Or the right upside-down ramp from Munsters.

How hard would it be to make a custom machine. Could you have an arduino connected to the components feeding high scores and inputs to a raspberry pi or Windows PC?

its very possible to make a real life replica IF you have some DIY skills. the basic table itself its just plywood with artwork, all the standard pieces are easy to find (flyppers, bumbers, rubber , plunger etc etc) the whole electronic control sounds and FX can be implemented on arduino or you could make it a "passive table" purely mechanical.

Invalid Reasons to Dislike a Pinball Machine:
The shots are "clunky".
The theme is bad.
It's too expensive.
The rules are too complex.

What are some themes you think would make a good machine? I was thinking of maybe a grid style dungeon crawler themed machine.

Rough idea of how it would work. Points would make you automatically move and losing a ball takes you back to the start.

Or you could have bumpers move a space each hit or something.

>> No.5471280

>>5470880
I think with the use of lcd displays in modern machines that a golf game would be interesting. I know that there have been a few golf themes in the past but those haven't really used any actual golf machanics in them and have mostly been dime store Caddyshack themes. You could have difficult shots for longer drives, easier shots for shorter ones.

>> No.5471406

>>5471129
>>5470880
What about using ramps/orbits for movement? Left to move left, right for right, straight up the middle for forward. You could also have a bash target for monster encounters, like you run into a monster and have to hit the monster a set number of times or hit the ramps enough to run away.

>> No.5471640

>>5471406
I think having to focus on where you are going and watching a ball might be too difficult. Having it auto walk would be easier, it could run in a way to where it never goes down the same dead end twice.

The idea of random encounters could work, like some might 20,000 points to kill and start moving again, while rare monsters might take 1 million points and give a bonus when "killed" as the score is met. Could have different targets pop up for different monsters.

See my post farther up in the thread about moving through the rooms on Alice Cooper's Nighamare Castle.

I have a word document with ideas for a pinball machine where making shots progresses you through history. And the different modes would be historical events.

>> No.5471684

>>5471640
With auto walk though would ruin any feel of the dungeon crawler experience. What about branching paths, like auto walk until a point and then you have to pick a shot to go a direction before returning to auto walk?

I think I played that one once but it was so dark I couldn't see anything on the board in a dark setting.

>> No.5472791

>>5471684
The dungeon layouts would be randomized and you will get to the end eventually since it wouldn't go down the same dead end twice.
Another idea would be "leveling up" by points like every million, then 2, 6, 10 etc and speed being an attribute. So by say 20+ million points you are blazing through the dungeons at about one step a second.

I've been learning unity and can model in 3D, it seems pretty easy to make a virtual pinball machine game. Though I wonder if I could rig up something later where it half runs on a raspberry pi for the score board and DMD/dungeon display that also connects to an arduino for a real pinball machine board output.

How many upper flipper loops did you do?

>> No.5473193

>>5473179
I wasn't counting, but considering I had a pyramid round multiplier of 3 for Calm Before the Storm and got the mega bonus into the 500 million range, I'd say somewhere around 50 or 60 loops. It was an even more impressive achievement because the upper right flipper on that particular Gladiators was pretty unresponsive and would occasionally just not engage.

Why Pinball FX is bad:
Flippers are too close together, making the games too easy.
Tables full of ramps that take forever to return to the flipper, killing flow.
Toys and gimmicks that are often less impressive than physical tables, despite not being constricted by physical laws or bill of materials.
Dangers aren't dangerous, because they go away if you let the tilt bob settle.
Spellathon-style rules. Rarely anything clever in that area.

The Williams recreations are cool though.
