What's the secret to Quake bunny-hopping so I can HUUH all over maps? Every video I watch, it looks like players are using a very-low mouse setting (what seems like low sensitivity but high acceleration), and that looks like it requires a large mousepad and for you to throw your mouse around, which I don't have the space for either. Everyone in videos I've watched shows you the keys to press, but not the other settings for your mouse. I've used the default settings all my life and couldn't get the precise turns that I've been watching.

There's occasionally a Half-Life/GoldSrc thread in the catalog.
A preferred sourceport for Singleplayer would be Xash3D, since it works better with mods, and fixes a lot of the features and detail that Valve broke over the years.
Steam would however generally have more people on multiplayer servers I think.

For specific mods, Sven-Coop was really cool, and The Specialists is some of the most fun FPS gameplay you can find, but I have no idea how active SvenCoop is now, and The Specialists was pretty barren even just 10 years ago.
Day Of Defeat was also fun, and in spite of contrarians nagging otherwise, Counter-Strike is damn enjoyable too, the latter you could probably still find a fair bunch of people to play with online.
You also have Team Fortress Classic, which doesn't have the stupid hats to change the gameplay, and also has the kickass grenades which TF2 opted not to feature.
Firearms was loads of fun, but the servers for that were a ghost town a long time ago, and you'd be damn lucky to find someone to play that with ever again, at least you'd meet a couple of dudes every now and then for some of the others.

I didn't try out all that many singleplayer mods, but I recall USS Darkstar was cool as hell, one of the early singleplayer campaigns, and one of the most ambitious at that time.

there's this one mod that shoots to recreate the quake guns in heretic. it was cool and the guns functioned the way you would expect but it did have some serious balancing issues related to random ammo spawns. made certain levels absolute hell.

threw it in alongside wrath of chronos just to see how I'd like heretic because I found the original arsenal sucked shit. burnt out on the fifth or so map, the aesthetic and flow of the maps bored me to tears.

So I begun to make my first my for Doom. Focus was suppose to be on low tier enemies(zombiemen,imps, pinkies with some shotgunners sprinkled here and there - so there isn't too much shotgun ammo) and low tier weapons (pistol and shotty).

However I ran into issues with encounter design. I can't make challenging encounter (for me) without resorting to:
>monster closet ambushes
>cqb
>locking down arenas
>attacking player from several directions
>monsters in dark areas
>any combination of above

Problem is that if you don't physically prevent it, at any point player can just run away to last chokepoint and deal with thread on his own terms. Only thing that is stopping him is desire to push forward

Imps are a threat only up close. Pinkies move like they are drunk and are a thread only if they manage to surround you or bodyblock you into corner/wall, otherwise you can just kill them with fist if you don't care about wasting time. Hitshitters are a diceroll when it comes to their effectiveness.

Actually, this little project made me like vanilla Doom less than before.

Anyway, do you guys have any idea how to make encounters more diverse without compromising challenge and my concept.
