1998 is indisputable as the best year. No matter what you like, what genre, what system, any criteria except individual game (if your favorite game of all time is Mario 3 or something) and 1998 wins by a mile.

This isn't even a new thing or worth arguing. Everybody knows it. Now if you want to say best year other than 98? I'd go 93 but that's because of my personal tastes for adventure games. Even then 98 almost beats it.

Hard, but fair. The sewer level is still the stuff of nightmares. I need to take my own screenshots somehow of the actual game because it's not the same without a CRT, but you get the idea.

Zoomers love parroting this but in retrospect 2001 had better everything. Don't bring up OoT, it was one of those "you had to be there in '98" kinda games. Half Life was cool, but HL2 was way more revolutionary. I'll give '98 credit for Parasite Eve, that's it.

SotE felt more classic Star Wars than anything else that came out afterwards (the prequel trilogy, KOTOR, VII and VIII).
It makes me sad that we lost that distinct SW feel. Nowadays it's generic sci-fi with mental powers.

I agree with him - i had a n64 as a kid (and a PC) and loved and played a lot of games, but i had a total blind spot for Zelda, never bothered with it. Trying to get into it now is... difficult. Perhaps i'm just not into that genre (i'm not the biggest rpg fan). I've played other old classics i missed and enjoyed them, so i don't think its a matter of me being too 'mature' for games.

Not really, plenty of bad games were made back then too. I think it's mostly the fact that from 1990 to 2000 the leaps in technology were so huge, compared to say, 2010 to 2020. I think it really inspired and pushed many to make games that were literally the best they could possibly be at the time

Half-life redefined the genre dude, before it came out they were simply frantic shooters lacking story and scripted scenes that don't take you out of the action. Then came the avalanche of neato mods some of which became their own staple series.

Taking scripted scenes, one of the most rudimentary forms of storytelling in games, that were present in other genres, is not innovation. If anything the FPS needing alien crabs popping out of walls (Quake II also did this), to give it the creative nudge out of arcade action (nothing wrong with just wanting to beat up some bad guys) is laughable.
Sure, Team Fortress Classic and Counter Strike may have come out Half Life but that is more of testament to the technology than the game itself.

As much as I like a lot of 96 releases, I believe that only Resident Evil, Duke Nukem 3D and Mario 64 were really influential. The rest of them were just sequels or rethreads of already existing franchises while the former three put in enough innovation that still mark their influence in games from today. 1997 and 1998 had more 5th gen releases that showed off what 3D gaming could deliver that earlier generations didn't and I feel that most of the classics from those two years hold up better like Goldeneye, GTA, OoT, Final Fantasy VII, Total Annihilation and Half-Life had a bigger impact on gaming as well. Other years like 1981, 1987, 1991 and 1993 also had a ton of great releases and so did 1994 like some anon mentioned. I'm not too familiar with games before 1979 so I don't know about the first and early second generation games. 6th gen has become a fine line between retro and not retro depending on if you look at just the presentation or the way games were distributed but gen 7 and later will always be too modern, even if it's been almost 15 years since the Xbox 360 got released.
