If you like that, play Marvel Super Heroes on the same platform. Same gameplay but more of a general Marvel theme instead of X-Men.

I wish I could git gud at this game. I can only ever beat Gambit's stage.

Maybe I don't understand it? Like on Normal difficulty it seems you can only blow your mutant power load once. I've always suspected I'm either doing something wrong or I just don't understand the game.

I know what you mean. What happens is that, if you choose Training, you can use your mutant powers with the X button, but you can only play the first stage of each character. On Normal, you can't use the powers with the X button. You have to do fighting game motions to access some of them. IIRC:
- Cyclops fires beams by doing a hadouken motion, even while jumping. You can do a crouch beam by doing a reverse hadouken.
- Psylocke and Wolverine can do a shoryuken motion to do an anti-air attack. Psylocke's psychic knife is done with a hadouken motion.
- I think everyone except Gambit can do a slide/dash by pressing front, front + Y. Gambit's is up + Y.

That said, the hardest stages are possibly Psylocke's and Beast's. Psylocke's always have some gimmick, while Beast feels really underpowered.

You can also do a dive/rebound attack by jumping and pressing down + Y. Only Wolverine, Psylocke and Beast have it. Wolverine dives with his claw, Psylocke and Beast rebound off the enemy.

You just have to figure out the button commands and play styles of the characters and play smart shrinking your hitbox when possible and not leaving yourself vulnerable. Play it more like a 1vs1 fighter.

Cyclops and Gambit should abuse their ranged attacks as much as possible. Cyclops optic blast is a 1 shot kill on most enemies. I usually try to do his crouching optic blast as it shrinks his hitbox. Cyclops is really easy to get hit with because he's so tall, slow and can't jump particularly high. Gambit is better as a melee character but can't jump to save his life so dodging is hard.

While it's tempting to use Psylocke's flying knee and psychic knife both those attacks have a relatively small range and leave you vulnerable to attack on completion. I'd recommend using her rebound kick while jumping back and forth between groups. If you can't connect crouch down to avoid fire and use her dash trip.

Wolverine is a brawler with a small hitbox but he's vulnerable in the air. Try to take guys head on using his dash attack and dragon punch motion move. He's got good range on his melee and doesn't leave himself very open. Avoid jumping except to avoid projectiles.

Beast is similar to Psylocke in some ways. I primarily stay airborne with Beast using his rebound attack which does a lot of damage. His dash attack and up Y attack are good for closing range quicly but leave you vulnerable so only use them when you have enemies on one side.

It's important to remember that many of the regular goons don't have a low attack so crouching with any character helps prevent taking damage.
