Now try it on the C64. I linked both the US and European versions because the US one has horrible ear-rape music that appears to have been fixed on the Euro release (note how much twangier it is).

These versions were made by leaf developer Unlimited Software who also produced those absolutely sterling C64 ports of Castlevania and Metal Gear. In all cases they seem to have had absolutely no clue how to use the SID, but from what I understand Castlevania and Metal Gear were never released in Europe so they didn't get an audio fix.

Revolution X on home console is genuinely impossible to beat without continues. In the light gun arcade cabinet you can move the cursor as fast as you can move your body but on a Dpad it has a maximum speed which you can't possibly exceed and that forces you to take hits when enemies or projectiles spawn at opposite sides of the screen. No continues might seem arbitrary but given that it's an arcade port it's not unrealistic to approach it in a 1cc mindset. Even in the arcade version it's still not realistic to do, you have to have a perfect memory of everything that happens if you want to beat it in one credit and get the true ending. I would imagine a ton of home console light gun ports that didn't have actual light gun support would have ended up this way unless the developers took the time to adjust the game for the different control scheme which probably wasn't the case because it was the 90's.

This segment is also annoying because of the fucking timer; it resets whenever you die in this area, but if you don't die at all, then you will barely have enough time to actually defuse all the bombs. It's like the developers designed it specifically knowing that you were going to lose a turtle or two in this area.

Yes. It's literally just them fucking up the design. As has been mentioned, the European release doesn't have this problem, and even in the American release it's possible to use an included walk-through-walls-in-the-overworld code to bypass this area and access the rest of the game.

The dam is not that hard. If you have at least three turtles, know how to navigate the level quickly, and time your way past the electrical currents that turn on off without getting hit you should have no issues. The trick with electrical seaweed is to just go balls out and swim right through it. Take the damage. There are only two sections you really need to go into. If you lose a turtle so what you still have more. Then you can rescue whoever you lost in the next section. No worries.

Hell, even compared to other NES games it's not that challenging unless you look at it like someone who's only used to easy games like kirby or mario. Ghosts and Goblins at the first stage is already much more challenging than anything in TMNT1 for the NES.
