I like hockey and golf, but my favorite sport IRL is swimming. Too bad there aren't any good swimming games.

There's such a large variety of great sports games I enjoy. I can go on and on with sports games I enjoy like:

Tecmo Super Bowl, R4: Ridge Racer Type 4, Punch Out!!, Klonoa Beach Volleyball, NBA Jam, Virtual Pro Wrestling 2, Mario Tennis 64, F-Zero, Super Dodgeball, Neo Turf Masters, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, Windjammers, ESPN/ESPN2 eXtreme Games, Sega Rally Championship, Blades of Steel, Waverace, Basewars, etc.

I was a sports fanatic growing up, I got the new releases pretty much every year, these were my favorites of the retro era:

World Series Baseball 98 (GOAT)
Mutant League Football (Genesis)
NBA Live 95 (SNES)
World Series Baseball (Saturn)
Madden 94 (SNES)
NHL 94 (SNES / Genesis - they say Genesis version is better, I actually like the palette and sound of the SNES version more, but they're pretty much the same game)
NHL All Star Hockey (Saturn - super underrated, got poor reviews, I had this at the same time as NHL 97 and found myself playing this way more often, best presentation ever in a sports game too)
Not retro but Madden 2000 (Madden 99's graphics blew me away for the first few times but then it wore off, 2000 was so crisp and clean it still looks good today, and the franchise mode was amazing in this, this was wonderful for an otherwise shallow football game tactically, which Madden usually was)
Most of the early NBA Jam games
Does Punch Out count?

I was blown away by NHL 97's graphics the first few times I played it, but after a while it was a shallow game. NHL 98 amazed me when I played it on PC because you could scan your picture in and all that stuff, which was the greatest thing at the time for a teenager and his friends, but I didn't play this one enough to be able to evaluate if it belongs on the list. There are 2 or 3 non retro games that would make my all time list, but for the most part the best sports games fall into the retro era.

This list is shockingly similar to what mine would be, including with Ice Hockey NES at the top of it. Volleyball NES is on mine, too, as well as both NES Track and Fields and Tecmo Bowl.

I enjoyed a lot of the games for the series. Tony Hawk games are like Tecmo Super Bowl, where I start playing and before you know it a whole night passed, and you didn't sleep because you were so engauged in the game.

Yep, unfortunately it only released in Japan and Europe but completely skipped over in the USA. It is not technically complex or deep game, but it has charm. Like the Megaman Soccer.

I played a lot of sports (mostly hockey and baseball) when I was a teenager, so sports games appealed to me. These games were fun enough for me to play regularly and very often with friends who didn't play sports. I'll leave off stuff that's "not retro."

Cyber Stadium Series: Base Wars (NES)
Baseball Stars Professional (Neo-Geo)
Baseball Stars 2 (Neo-Geo)

MLB Slugfest series (PS2, Xbox, Gamecube)

NBA Hangtime (Arcade)

Arch Rivals (Arcade)

>Hockey
Ice Hockey (NES)
Blades of Steel (NES)
2-on-2 Open Ice Challenge (Arcade)
NHL Hitz series (PS2, Xbox, Gamecube)

>Golf
Neo Turf Masters (Neo-Geo)

>Tennis
Pong (Various platforms)
Realsports Tennis (Atari 2600)
Virtua Tennis series (Arcade, Dreamcast)

>Volleyball
Beach Spikers (Arcade, Gamecube)

I'm not a sports game person at all, and while I'm very partial to baseball as a whole, I've enjoyed all of the above sports games. The only exception is ESPN NFL 2K5, which is on that list due to just how much effort was truly put into it compared to EA Shit's titles. It's worth taking a look at just for the FPV mode alone.
