Super Mario 2 aged perfectly (did it age at all? haha)
>beautiful blue skies
>***4*** different playable characters with UNIQUE SPRITES and UNIQUE MECHANICS
>every level unique with a theme to each group of levels
>**vertical levels**
>no time limit yet still challenging (no artificial difficulty of time limit)
>brilliant choice of colors with all enemies unique and easy to distinguish (and memorable too)
>castle boss is always something crazy and different
>maze levels are fun and not too long

You're right for the wrong reasons. SMB was good for its time, but 3 is so much better that there is no reason to play the original anymore.
2 is better as well.

These I agree with, everything else not so much. I think the graphics aged a lot better than, say, Zelda or Metroid which look like total shit.
The time limit isn't short, it promotes running through levels fast which is basically the point. Vertical level design isn't necessary, it's just something that works when it works. Horizontal levels also work when they work, like here.
I don't think there are any glaring beginner traps in the first, unlike Lost Levels. The only actual bullshit I can think of are hammer bros.

fuck that memory maze shit though
some of the others are definitely relics of the era, because it's on such a small ROM

also
>purple sky
adjust your TV's tint lmao

time limits are useful game design and emphasize exciting, fast-paced gameplay
a lot of level design aspects don't really matter to the player without time pressure, they're just minor annoyances rather than an active danger

Speaking of SMB1, I'm having issues emulating it. No matter the ROM, when I get to the title screen, none of my controls work. Not on keyboard, not on gamepad.

the levels complement the slippery gooder. in mario it feels like youre stopping and slowing down to score points, unless you want to autistically speedrun it (I dont.) mario 2 pushes you in that direction naturally. its really well done

I really hate to reply to this shit thread, but seeing as it's the only thread up right now discussing Mario 1--does Mario fundamentally handle differently in the first game vs. the later games? Speaking mostly with regards to control over in-air movement, and momentum.

I don't know if I'm going nuts or what, or if I'm contending with input lag/latency or something, but I have such a fucking hard time playing the first Mario game these days. Jumping feels sluggish and unresponsive, I can't make precise jumps at all. I find myself massively under or over-compensating for Mario's momentum. I don't really find myself having this problem in Mario 3 at all. I also don't remember having any problems with Mario 1 as a kid.

Most modern Mario games take more after World when it comes to their physics. Take it from me, a zoomer that grew up playing Yoshi's Island on GBA. It's super weird trying to get used to the subtly different mechanics of SMB1 and 3 after years of that.
