Why did it not make the sort of waves that the famous 2D/2.5D/3D shooters of the early-to-mid 90s did?

Not enough tude

Hmm... I think you're right. All those famous shooters had either tude (Doom, Duke, ...) or at least some kind of other kind of gripping atmosphere (Quake). Descent is just fighting against drones and while it's atmospheric, I guess it's not really atmospheric in an iconic way.

it was only decent

It made a fair number of waves at the time, enough to spawn two immediate sequels and multiple franchise spin-offs/spiritual successors. Also, pic related was a ubiquitous forum avatar in the 90s and early 00s

Yeah, i played and loved it and recall others online discussing it. Never became a cultural sensation like doom or quake though, i guess because the 6dof controls are more difficult, and often people require a joystick, whereas doom and quake are pretty straightforward with almost 2D game-play.

Spot on. Same reason Marathon never really took off.

Because it was literally a tech-demo

It did. The shareware release was all over the place and it sold well enough for them to make a sequel. We played it a lot over network, at home and at work. Stellar possibilities in death match if you master its controls and the 6dof mindset.

Had this on our high school network as shareware. Pretty fun deathmatch

how fucking stupid are you that you can't even read the OP but you think you're answering it. AS MUCH OF A WAVE AS

Yeah, it was fun. I actually bought the original game though (and put it on our hs network).

>> No.5415314

Bootlegged the original from a friend and a few of us played together via-dial up and then cable connection

It was a super fun multiplayer and to be actually playing together with others in a relatively simple way (the interface for lan connections and dialing into others computers worked quite well) it was a bit ahead of its time.

Same reason tank controls didn't catch on - it's unplayable unless you have >100 IQ.

I remember this being demoed in the stores. One store that we used to go to had to remove it bc it was giving people motion sickness when they played it.
