Playing Koudelka now (close to 4th disk). Ignore this anon's suggestion, the game is fairly shit and the only good thing about it is the "setting" (a.k.a. old gothic manor) and the characters.

I wouldn't use the word "hard" but "tedious", much like Dragon Quest 1 is.

It's such a slow game, which is saying a lot for a game that is shorter than 12 hours. It's an horror RPG but it feels like it would have been much better off as a straight up survival horror because none of the things that make it an RPG are remotely close to being "good":

1. Combat uses a grid but never does anything with it, since you are effectively cornered or corner the enemies with no chance to move around the field in any way that makes the grid useful. There's no strategy at all, just deal damage and heal like in your average JRPG, except far slower, far less flashy, and far more tedious.
2. There's next to NO battle information. You don't know your enemies' HP, you don't know what elements they are weak as (no "super effective" or anything like it that lets you know your spell is actually useful), you only get a handful of spells that stay the same for most of the game (I have literally earned just two new spells), which are basic "four elemental" attacks and a bunch of "fortify stat" spells.
3. You can switch equipment in battle but there's no info on equipment stats or elemental affinities so you have no fucking idea if it is worth it or not to change.
4. You level up far too often (I'm level 28 in just 8:30hs of gameplay) and it seems like stat allocation is fairly linear, i.e. simply put all your ability points into a few dedicated stats because going for jack of all trades is suicidal.
5. Hell, there's no even "battle rewards" screen, so you don't know how much experience you gained (probably because you level up so quickly there's no point in asking for one). You only get a screen when you earn items.

Things that are actually good:

1. Voice acting.
2. Interesting characters.
3. Interesting setting.
4. Interesting story? The game is so slow I lost track of it. Lack of subtitles doesn't help.
5. Pre-rendered backgrounds look nice.
6. Main character is a babe.

Bottomline is: this game is shit and if it wasn't because of its unusual dark setting (especially unusual since this is a JRPG) it would have fallen into the deepest obscurity.
