yeah ok.
VS a human player, they'd get hit with potshots from the other side of the map until they die or attack, and the second they attack they get surrounded on all 6 sides and killed in one round.

And without that huge attack stat, they can barely do enough damage to keep up their numbers.

They are great vs wandering monsters, but so are elves with expert slow.

So its a forge-based town, but not a total copy of the original roster.
this idea typically puts me off, a lot of the time these redesigns end up with a lot of pure mechanical units which doesn't appeal to me as much as half-mechanical abominations made from units abducted from all the different factions.
All these mod teams seem to imagine the juggernaut as a dragon golem too while we know it was originally to have been recruited from a runway implying it could fly.
I reckon they're better off just trying to make forge so we can experience what it would have been like without needing WoG but I guess I should wait until its out to judge.

Alright lads?

I played MM7 when I was...10? So 20 years ago now.

I bought it off GOG and started it the other night, but I'm having a bit of a hard time getting going as it were. I've literally just got off Emerald Isle and I'm clearing out the Goblins to the launcher outside Harmondale.

Are there any like "Big" chests/crates I should head towards to get a bit of a headstart? Most of my team don't even have ANY sub armor (rings/gloves/boots) etc and my characters have the most absolute basic bitch gear. I played up until the path selection as a kid, which took about 6 months, but I know I'm going Dark as it seems more fun, aesthetically.

I'm running with Knight/Monk/Druid/Cleric at the moment, as that was recommended to me for a pretty pain free runthrough. I kinda just have Druid/Cleric at autocast heal at the moment, and my other 2 just smack the shit out of things: admittedly it's only been dragonflies etc so far.

Should I go straight for the "Bigger" quests like promotions etc? I dunno lads, I'm kinda lost already.

Any advice would be WONDERFUL

Terrible class. GM Alchemy is still locked behind 2 promotion quests and the Mirror Path stuff, so its not going to do anything until long after you can start getting black potions from Deijya or even Pit/Celeste
>Cleric
Turns out GM Body + Protection from Magic protects against instant death. Its the only thing in the game that do this, meaning its mandatory if you want to melee behemoths or minotaurs
And turns out Light/Dark magic is still completely busted, even if its easier to find Day of Gods/Hour of Power scrolls/temples/fountains
>Monk
Turns out Disarm is a mandatory and important skill because you still need to cross the threshold of Expert 7 for +15 Disarm gear to even work 100%.
Its also why playing KKKC is painful, because your ability to loot is limited.
>Knight
Strongest class in MM7 because it turns out Regeration scales of your max HP. And Armsmaster is better than actual weapon skills, where GM is unparalleled.

Funnily enough, they absolutely do fit in from a lore standpoint. Remember the Foolhardy Waywardness campaign? In the third and fourth mission of that campaign, Sir Christian (i.e. you, the player) has do deal with Regnan pirates, which is what the Cove faction represents. You even got them in M&M 6, 7 and 8. That being said, I would've preferred that the HotA team added a Vori Elf faction instead of Factory (and didn't fuck up the Resistance skill) but it is what it is.

The Warlock (dark path) is the one to steal the dragon egg. There are actually 2 dragon caves in Eeofol and you only need to go into the second. The first has the megadragon, and the second just has some random dragons and a couple eggs in the last part. You can use invisibility to run through and grab them if you don't feel like fighting dragons, or you can just kill them all. Overall, this is one of the most obnoxious quests in the entire game (The Champion/2nd light path knight promotion is also terrible).

The Arch Druid (light side) just requires you to fight some gogs in the tunnels to nighon and then turn the remains into the same barrow as the meditation spot for the first monk promotion was. This is basically trivial by the time you have chosen light path.

I fixed the issue where brown/hades always prematurely wins by finding the curiass by trapping him in his realm using the guard tower/keymaster tent.

My cleric heals 1/4 hp in one spell, and has party wide bless. Sorceror just got lightning bolt and fireball, although I;m worrying about MP. I might need to bank a few levels to put points into meditation.

I went to get that big chest in the Barrow Downs that blows up, but has the dirtiest loot. I got an ID+9 item neck, and a +5 Unarmed ring. Both are fucking amazing for my team.

It's not. It did have alot of bugs and issues on release, but majority got fixed. It's just as capable of sinking you in for hours of gameplay as any other game in the series. If your issue is with heroes on the battlefield, or army moving without hero, then you shouldn't play anything past 3 because you clearly can't stand any innovation. If your point is dated graphics - well, i don't have anything in their defense, but i still think the game looks very nice.

Different anon and I did started with HoMM3... and yet I still find HoMM4 to be the best, at least in terms of campaigns. Multiplayer sucked ass, but that came from lack of randomly generated map (this kills multiplayer in pretty much any game), rather than the game mechanics themselves.
I absolutely adore the fact heroes are integral part of your army and there is unit selection for higher tiers. Caravans were also great.
The game I really fucking hate is HoMM5, because it's dead-set on being like HoMM3, despite not understanding what made 3 so good. Any pretense of balance is a complete joke, the AI can't play for shit (HoMM4 had bugged pathfinding, HoMM5 just can't play, period), game takes extensive amount of fan-patches to not consisting of turn loading, graphics are a literal eye-sore and entire fun lore went to shit, to be replaced with the most boring and generic stuff imaginable, especially with expansion. Couldn't care less what happend with the series from there on, but judging from everyone complaining - nothing good.

I also started with 3, in fact it was the first video game i have ever played - and i still like 4, perhaps even better than 3. I loved every single change they introduced, the writing in campaigns was god tier, and the music was probably best in the series. Also, much like >>5425815 i also disliked 5. Campaigns and story were okay-ish despite entering a new universe, but the music was dull, and the maps were so damn confusing - i missed alot of stuff every game, simply because i coudln't see it from behind trees or rocks, and constantly rotating the camera was a chore and made me get lost in the map at times.
Although i think 6 was pretty good. It fixed most compliants i had with 5 (except the music maybe, majority is just recycled from older games). I also liked the resource reduction, the territory system, magic and skill rework was great, and the dynasty system was pretty fun. You're very correct that 3 RoE is where the original concept for the series pretty much hit a wall, and the devs realized it, which is why they tried to do a different things with 4. However there's a reason why 3 is still played to this day and no games after it are, and that's because it's reached the peak of what it tried to do, Plus, literally no Heroes game after 3 shipped as a finished fucking product. Literally every release was bugged, none had good AI, and all stopped development before the full vision for those games was fully realized.

Brainlet spotted. 6 killed logistics (hire everyone everywhere, town portal is a common spell), 6 killed town development (moreso than 5 did), 6 killed hero development (take mass regen ez), 6 is barely even a Heroes game, it plays more like if King's Bounty went more in the adventuring RPG direction than strategy, except we already have a better version of that, it's called King's Bounty by Katauri. There's no complex decisions, every town has exact same tree, you're basically open to do whatever you want regardless of which faction you play because the only real progression lock is the town hall upgrades. Fucking Heroes 1 had more complexity than that.

Honestly sick of HoMM series for a while. I've started with AB campaigns in January and currently only one more campaign in SoD remains to be cleared.

AB was full of weird design choices (limits like no taverns, no map-travel spells, low level caps, beginning with 3-4 towns etc.) which became tiresome after a while. SoD is arguably worse since you basically play 4 factions all the damn time and the game has inconsistent difficulty. All Rampart maps are either easy or medium. On the other hand, Stronghold maps (especially 'Hack and Slash' ones) are usually bullshit. And the story is once again basic and not that interesting considering hours you spent on playing. I really expected more after seeing so many memes with Sandro and Crag Hack, god damn it.

>>5425647
I have issues with simultaneous counter-attack, sieges, non-existent spell balancing, less town variety, confusing town names, ugly models, dozens of useless map elements, Chaos campaign and probably a few more things.

>>5425797
If the gameplay is borderline perfect then don't change it. Just add new storylines, enhance the graphics, present new soundtrack, switch some towns for new ones etc. Nintendo knows this and this is why it makes so many similar, albeit good, games.
This is my take on the matter and many people agree with me. You may not and kudos to you since innovation is often needed.

I don't love it, I don't hate it. I guess I had some fun playing it. It had some good ideas - like the Blood/Tears mechanic, and some shitty ideas. I liked some unit designs - like in Haven - and I had fun playing a campaign. AlI actually liked this blatant GoT ripoff family drama.
Would I recommend it over 2, 3, or even 5? No. But I have spend a few hours of fun time with it. So that's that.

Hey lads,

MM& Replay bro here. Quick question. On my Monk should I focus more on Unarmed or Armsmaster?

Also how much should I focus on getting Hammer Hands on my cleric for my Monk?

Sorry, I might have already asked this, but I cant see any answer to my question that I could see.

Cheers!

Master unarmed gives x2 skill damage and attack, master AM - x1 recovery time reduction, attack and damage, I think pretty obvious what is better. Hammer Hands only adds caster's skill level in Body magic to damage afaik.

They vary quite a lot. Not only the units are different, but so are the hero classes and the prices for getting units and their (often crucial) upgrades are all over the place.
If you want to have easy learning experience, try either Castle or Rampart. They are probably the best factions in terms of learning your ropes, with decent and affordable units, limited number of gimmicks and solid heroes. So it's hard to mess up even for a complete newbie.
Said that, the game mostly relies on your familiarity with units from all factions and knowing how to deal with them (if there is any special way other than "mash them, boil them, put them in a stew". So once you remember which unit is from which faction, what tier it is an if it's strong for its tier or not, the game becomes significantly easier.

Unarmed almost exclusively. Until you get to the super late game your dps is higher without using a staff (even with GM) due to how slow the base recovery is compared to not using a weapon at all, so armsmaster is mostly worthless.

Has anyone else played "Goldheart"?

This map blew me away. Story-wise probably the best I've played. The exploration and battle parts are great too, it starts off very easy and then gradually becomes more difficult.

The lore is deep in this map, let me tell you. There are creation myths, intrigues, treason, godlike beings with mysterious agendas... You play this hero who wakes up in the middle of the desert with no memory of how he ended up there, and then he's thrust into this plot that will decide the fate of the kingdom.

I'm not sure if I understood the ending though. For those who played it, what did you make of it? Did Roger succumb to the temptation of power and murder Ellabell, and then the gods robbed him of his memories so he could start anew and stop Valan Erloen? That's my take, but I think the map creator left it open to interpretation...

I highly recommend this map to anyone who enjoys story-centric maps. It's a fun ride from start to finish.

Have you played the rest of the maps made by Timothy Duncan? If not, please consider playing Sander's Folly as it is similar in style to Goldheart. I'd also recommend that you play the two parts of Traemask triology (The Outpost of Progress and The Story of the Fool) if you can stomach unfinished stories (I'm sorry to say that the third and final part had never been made).

A few years ago I played with a friend on his pc and he had some maps downloaded and we played on this one that was like a huge island in the middle seperated into 8 zones by mountains, you couldn't get on the water either and there were also tiny islands with monsters and goodies on them all around the edges and each zone and island had an entrance and an exit portal, with the entrance portals taking you to a random exit portal, anyone knows what map I'm talking about?

>Today, one of my scouts discovered the secret camp of the Demons who killed my Goblins. If I was ever going to defeat these creatures, I had to prove to my men that they weren't worthy of their fear. So, I took four men with me to the Demon camp. While they watched from the bushes, I approached the Demons alone. I faced Imps, and Gogs, and a single Demon alone. If I hadn't caught them by surprise, I would've been killed. Instead, I swept through them like an angry storm. First, I took out the Gogs, then the Demon leader. Most of the Imps ran. Unfortunately, they ran directly into my men, who joined the fray to finish the last of the creatures. Picking up one of the Imps, I said, "This is what you've been afraid of! Now, go back and tell the others - our enemy is weak!"

In Might and Magic 6, you get to kinda see what a single 4 man hero party vs small armies looks like. 7 and 8 really dials this down by a huge margin.

So it has most likely been thought of and voted down a few times.
So in essence, HOMM4 plays a lot like a Might and Magic and Heroes hybrid, but without the devtime and polish to leave the late alpha stage.
