Just installed System Shock, never played this before.
Do I use the OPL3 or SCC-1?
also, audio hardware thread.

Go with OPL3 for dauntiness, or SCC-1 for fanciness. You decide which you want to prioritize.

What if I want both?
I've been running around the first level a bit with the SCC, it sounds good overall but I think the electronic soundtrack may be more suited to the OPL3, instead of simulated with "real" GM instruments. I like the overall sound quality of the SCC-1, though.

really? nobody wants to talk about sound cards?

Creative made one hell of a sound card back in the day. Back when sound cards were for playing music and that's it.

Really Adlib and Yamaha deserve all the credit, Creative did their own thing for a while and only later included an Adlib-compatible OPL2 on their SB cards.

I have a Roland Audio Producer but it has like 40 filter caps that need replacing and I've been putting it off.

y tho?

Not audio hardware, but if anyone is looking to get one of the original RealMagic Sigma Designs MPEG decoder add-on cards for their 486 machine, I'm seeing the 411 and 417 available on ebay. As far as I know, the only real difference between the two is the passthrough cable used to connect to the video card for the overlay magic.

Are they leaking? Usually the only caps that really *need* replacement are power supply filter caps, and then only from boards made during the capacitor plague (early-2000s abit mainboards are most notorious). Audio filter caps don't see nearly as much stress.

>>5405320
from youtube comments:
>The capacitors on the CT2230 were all changed to match the specifications in the TEA2025B amplifier chip's datasheet.
I guess not everyone knows how RC filters work. Even then nobody should be using the on-board amp chip, it's only for driving cheap passive speakers.

Are all real OPL3 cards basically the same?

>> No.5407324

>>5407308

If by "the same" you mean do all real OPL3 cards use the same OPL3 chip for MIDI output, then yes; otherwise, no.

>he doesn't code his own songs from scratch

And by the way, from the SB AWE32 onwards they stop being "real" OPL3 cards, just a heads up.

I am more interested in that keyboard in the background. It looks exactly like the one I had for my 286/386DX/486DX4 down to the num_lock light and fonts. I had to give it up because the "t" key kept doubling up. I miss its metallic sounds.

As for sound cards, I am only familiar with Sound Blaster. The sound I remember the most was from the original 8-bit one which got transplanted from the 286-12 to 386DX-40. Which models are best?

I always wanted a Gravis Ultrasound because Zone 66 recommended it on its help pages. I loved the music from the game, and I thought it was call that the game was made by those of the demoscene. Aside from the crack .nfo and executables which typically had cool music too, Zone 66 introduced me to whatever was a demoscene.

I don't really like any of the sound blaster models. Most use way too heavy filtering and various versions have bugs in the midi implementation (stuck notes). Give me a good clone card any day, I personally like the yamaha YMF71x series. ESS cards are great too.
The keyboard is just a Model M, the industrial grey version.

Does ANYONE know how to make games that use Aureal3D audio work on a "modern" fomputer woth Windows 10 and no A3D sound card?

>> No.5409443

>>5409403
I think it should work right out of the box, but you won't have 3d audio or reverb without an A3D card.

I really need to replace the filter caps on my SB16. It's developed ridiculous hiss on the output.

are those 30-pin SIMM slots? do they take normal pc ram sticks and if so what does the card use them for

>> No.5410546

>>5410534
They take ordinary simms. They're used for storing sound fonts for midi.
