You know what. Just give Plutonia's demo reel another look. There are three demos. Two of them are about a person, playing in almost perfectly controlled manner in neat and complex looking maps, another one (with all the cacodemons) is about dude running all over the not particularly well laid out and textured place, tanking shit, missing left and right and generally being all over the place.
Milo's maps can be played like chess, extremely slowly (Milo himself doesn't play slowly, but, then again, he knows his levels by heart, so it makes sense he proceeds at a brisk pace), unless when in specific conditions where you just HAVE to run. You make a move - level makes a move. Level makes a move - you make a move. There is logic to it, there is visible room for improvement, it is always clear when your solution just doesn't click perfectly, and there is always such a solution, that DOES click perfectly, if you actually start giving a fuck, pay attention to your current locales, think about the whole situation, and maybe experiment a bit.

Playing Milo's maps is 80% cerebral activity, not reflexes.

And yes, I am talking specifically about playing from pistolstart, on ultraviolence, with auto-aim off, and on vanilla-compatible sourceport (in order to preserve the auto-aim-cutoff distances, that are factored in Milo's levels EVERYWHERE).

>with auto-aim off
What? The original game is *built* for you to use vertical auto-aim, due to the lack of vertical aiming, Plutonia still sticks to those rules, and expects you to play as such.

If you're playing without auto-aim, either you need to be playing with a port that gives you actual mouse freelook to compensate for that, or you're unable to deal with vertical height, and you're literally playing the game completely wrong, and that's why you're not having a good time.

>Dario's - don't, they are basically slaughtershit precursors.
The thing I find most hilarious about this claim, is that it was Milo who made Go 2 It, and Memento Mori's Showdown, which are probably the most slaughtery maps of the two brothers.

>> No.5404306

>>5404297
To be fair, Dario did make Punisher, which was what Go 2 It was based on,

>> No.5404347

>>5404279
Okay, yes, you have a point. Demo1 was Dario's level (17), I didn't spot it, because I skipped it, idcleving into Milo's maps, and my current save is in the beginning of level21. So, I've seen the majority of Milo's levels to have a certain idea of what I'm talking about in regard to how they tend to play out, but I didn't complete all of his Plutonia maps so far. Also, on a sidenote, player from Demo3 (12, Milo's level) is not all that good, or maybe he just gives that impression due to higher mouse sensitivity.

I have a suspicion there could've been a switch, Milo playing two Dario's levels, Dario playing one Milo's levels, which might explain at least some of my misfires, but, of course, there is no proof, so I won't stick to that.

Anyway, not only I still have Milo's part of Plutonia to finish, I have plans to revisit them, along with his earlier maps, as well, so, well, that wasn't my final word on the matter, and I do hope to set things right, so to speak, eventually.

>>5404293
And like you read only those things you want to read, omitting those that clash with your narrative. I mistyped, I corrected, to some extent, my mistake, twice, >>5404172>>5404173.
Here is the third correction, just because I can:
>with manual vertical AIMING off

>> No.5404363

>>5404347
Also, I've seen some of the maps from Dario's Prodigy ep for Quake, and I don't think he learned all that much from his mapping for Plutonia or rubbing off his brother. So I don't really have any intention to delve into his Plutonia mappings anyway, I don't like to do what I currently consider to be wasting my time.

>>5404306
Not to mention, that several of his Plutonia's maps are very much of remixes of already existing maps by different mappers. Remakes of Inmost Dens and Circle of Death - from a top of my head, probably quite a bit more I didn't spot the first time around or have forgotten about since. I see nothing strange in some of his maps being remixes on what his brother has done.
Anyway, whatever.

Baron's Den and Habitat are the ones which are genuinely fucking shitty, the former is really halfbaked and hides the red key in a crude manner, which is really easy to miss and frustrating, and Habitat is not just hideous to look at, but plays really weakly (the author of this map made only one other, Map 01 for Icarus, which oddly, is pretty decent).

Mount Pain is one which is very mixed. It's needlessly large, and it has some areas which are nothing short of "Oh god, why did you do this?", but there's enough parts which are decent that I can't look at that level and call it outright awful, but there's enough rough parts that I can't look at it as a whole and say "that's pretty good".

Last Call is kind of a weak final boss map. Most Bossbrain levels, including the original in Doom 2, aren't particularly strong, and I'd say it about compares; not great, but also not so bad that you would want to just stop playing (it's short enough anyway).

Habitat can be beaten pretty quick if you know how, so you don't need to suffer the map much if you know what to do, and if you know where the red key is in Baron's Den, the map will otherwise progress pretty normally.

You can approximate that by changing the shape to "dot" then upping the scale. If 2.0 is too small for you change rc_scale to whatever you want in the console. This crosshair is an actual game object and will be larger up close or smaller further away, so you may have to tweak it a bit.

Yes.
It's a complex art in fact, given that a level for a game has two qualities; looking good, and playing good.
A map can look poor, but still be good if it plays well, but if a map doesn't play well, it matters really quite little, even if the visuals are breathtaking.

A *really* good map would both look and play good, and would require both artistic talent and a good understanding of how the game plays. This applies for any game's level design, Doom or not.

Now that you say that, you're right, but that works for me, because it makes it a *tiny* bit more plausible that you could carry that thing along with all the other shit. It's very wide compared to all the other weapons.
The only other gun close to as large would be the grenade launcher, and it still doesn't come close, except maybe in the width of the cylinder assembly.

Also I worked out an attachable/detachable silencer (don't remember if I posted it), which in hindsight, I realize that what I learned writing that code, could be applied to making the 'single uzi, and two uzis as separate weapons', as just one weapon with an alt-fire mode for dual-wielding, so that'll go faster when I get to that.

Cat's Visor and the Doomnukem/Wildweasel visor are more basic. Otherwise there's the HXRTC HUD or NCHUD. HXRTC HUD has a little more to its visual design than the NCHUD does.

Is there any other mod that does something like this? I know Demonsteele's Hae-Lin does this, but her sword is lightning fast!

That's Chocolate Doom/Heretic/Hexen - it's completely true to vanilla.

Crispy Doom/Heretic/Hexen is same, but double the resolution - like Doom95 port.

PRBoom+ is vanilla gameplay, but removed limitations that allows larger custom maps to be loaded, and some additional functions for mappers. You can filter out textures and use mouselook in this, but you can also disable those if you want. Boom-compatibility in a wad description means you need this port or GZDoom/3DGE/Eternity.

Doom Legacy (now RemooD) - first to develop proper GL support, has splitscreen (ReMooD up to 4 players) and Boom-compatibility.

GZDoom is for gameplay and visual mods.

3DGE and Eternity have long since been superseded by GZDoom in every way.

Doomsday is limited to vanilla compatibility (so no big maps) and is purely for eyecandy (many consider ugly)

Vanilla is not very playable on DOSBox, the mouse aiming is not pleasant even with a fix since game reads either vertical or horizontal movement at a time, but not all at once, and have different sensetivities for both which results in some whacky aiming.
Also it constantly bounces between either too low FPS in complex scenes, or too high FPS any time it exceedes 120 which is game physics tic rate the physics become slightly out of synch with visuals. Stay above 120 for too long and it results in shit like vidrelated. Also some things are tied to framerate like Choking Hand Damage and push off rate. At certain FPS it instakills you and you cant take it off since you cant mash space fast enough.

NBlood is visually more accurate than GDX, but its mechanics are approximate and cause desynch with demos.
GDX uses Polymost so lighting looks a bit different from vanilla, but mechanically it is 100% like original since those are reverse-engineered from alpha code and EXE.

Why do people insist on using mouse aiming in Build games? They work pretty well with autoaim.

Also, correct me if I am wrong, but isn't FPS desync problem supposed to be easily solvable by limiting cycles or something?

In Blood - tossing dynamite accurately, not blowing youself up with Napalm and using Tesla's altfire

Not really. Cycles are not FPS, as DOSBox has no way of limiting that one for my knowledge.
If you limit your cycles so it does not go overboard in simple scenarios, then it will absolutely tank the complex ones

I have an unusual request you are, of course, free either to regard, to disregard or to tell me to stuff it into whatever.

I am playing Heretic. I have taken a note about certain levels that seem to me to be made by the same person. Those levels are E1M2, E1M6, E2M3, E2M7, E3M7 and E3M9. The list is not exhaustive, there could be other levels alike these in this game's original campaign.

What I ask of you is to try wandstarting those levels, warping into them on penultimate difficulty (engageXY warps you to level EXMY, for example, engage12 warps you to E1M2), to play them slowly and attentively whenever possible, to make mental notes about anything sticking out for you, however small, to carefully assess every level of those you decide to tackle independently. And to try to determine for yourself, whether or not it seems to YOU, that they were, indeed, by and large, made by the same person - and whatever your version is, why exactly you happen to think that is the case.

Also, I would say, E1M2, E1M6 and E2M7 are more puzzle-heavy, while E2M3, E3M7 and E3M9 are more combat heavy. And, in case you don't happen to think those "puzzle" and "combat" subsets were made by the same people, the question still stands in regard to whether you happen to think that the "puzzle" subset (E1M2, E1M6, E2M7) was, in your opinion, made by the same mapper - and whether you happen to think that the "combat" subset (E2M3, E3M7, E3M9) was made by the same mapper (even if different from the first one).

Oh no. There are a lot of levels in Heretic that play out MUCH worse from wandstart than any of those I mentioned. The "puzzle" levels (of those I mentioned) in particular DO, however, require you to pay very close attention to the environments. Also, for "combat" levels, infighting and skipping certain monsters until much later (if at all) are absolutely the things.

Also, I'll use this opportunity to add E4M3 from Shadow of Serpent Riders into the "puzzle" subset.

Map11 is a good example of a particular gimmick.
Plutonia 2's take is better, but obviously it has the benefit of being inspired by the original, as well as having many years of hindsight on mapping in general, all on top of being made with more complexity and detail, given the better hardware people had at the time (and certainly these days).

None of that diminishes that Map11 was a pretty fresh idea at the time, and a pretty good map, particularly for the kind of mapset Plutonia is.
I'd really like the see the idea of an Arch-Vile inhabited labyrinth revisited for Doom 5, because I figure there's a lot of neat things you can do to the concept with modern graphics and physics.

They made remasters of Strife, Turok, Turok 2, and System Shock. I've played the first 3 and they were all quality.
Based on what the dev has posted it'll be basically Blood with modern standards (FOV, resolution, etc.) and some fixed bugs. So it won't be demo-accurate like the other ports, but it shouldn't be massively different from the original game.

If you want it to sound same way as developers heard it when they made it - then Roland SC-55 as it was most widely used.

But if you want it to sound better - there are some other soundfonts. I used WeedsGM3 and then GM4 for the most part, until i stumbled across some tracks in Ancient Aliens that simply didn't sound right. Then I looked for the offending instruments and replaced them with their Roland counterparts, and so far it was an ideal for me - the instruments are pretty much the same but they all sound richer https://www.mediafire.com/file/er4klqrtv98joa6/SplicedWeedsGM4.sf2/file

It's a VERY good game, arguably better than the Marathons, managed to age remarkably well too, but I don't know how faithful this port is mechanics-wise (haven't checked it out yet), and whether the person who ported the game, managed to take out of Marathon every lame gimmick Marathon introduced, when compared to the original PiD, in the first place.
From what I understand, the port doesn't support both demos though (Demo A1 for 68k macs, and Demo 2.0 for PowerPC macs, both have their own levels, Demo 2.0 in particular is pretty bitching).

Brutal just kind of ignores actual gameplay balance in favor of spectacle, though, and not in the silly Russian Overkill way.

I still play with gameplay mods a lot, just because there's such a wide and interesting variety of stuff out there. Look for different experiences besides Brutal, there are plenty of fun ones. I'd recommend Reelism if you're looking for fast-paced excitement, though it's an entirely different gamemode to normal Doom.

Demos are recordings of gameplay (not video, but the series of commands that the recorder inputted). So when an engine runs demos it's repeating the inputs of whatever the person who recorded the demo did. If the engine is inaccurate, the demo will desync, because the physics or whatever don't match up to what they were when it was recorded.
BloodGDX can run demos perfectly, NBlood can run them but they desync sometimes, BloodEX doesn't run them at all AFAIK.

Everyone prefers Vanilla for a few reasons that you'll catch shortly.

Brutal doom feels good but it's kinda balanced like shit desu.
The original doom had very specific choices like the chaingun being an accurate weapon for stunlocking longer distance enemies and etc.

Play something like chocolate doom or Retrodoom and ignore stuff like no jumping or mouselook, take the game at face value and you'll probably come to see that Doom 1 and 2 just naturally has an immersive, fun quality to it, regardless of renderer or features like glory kills and advanced gore. It takes a specific kind of awful *talent* to remove that (cough cough that Russian modding pack lanios was in cough cough)

That's more to do with the CPU side of things, as gameplay mods usually introduce a heap load of secondary actors for every monster/item present in the map to do their working, and those can not be off-loaded to the GPU.

However you can try disabling: Light Shadowmaps (or reduce their resolution and filtering method), disable dynamic lights and disable all the GL post processing (Bloom, AO, multisamlpling etc.).
Also you can try changing render method from Quality to Speed (will produce some blank white pixels on linedef edges sometimes for 1 frame, looks fine on simple maps, worse on complex ones)

I see in config.cfg zoom ("zoom_out") being bound to F11 by default, on which it works as a toggle command: ones press zooms in, second press zooms out. But whenever I bind *either* zoom_in or zoom_out to mouse2 or mouse3, it only ever does that one command. What am I doing wrong here?

Mate, defining groups of people by generation is not a "flavour of the month" meme. It has been going on for decades. Generation Z people have been referred to as such since 2012. Jesus christ.
>Further, it's intrinsically linked to Wojak edits.
Buddy, people make wojaks out of everything. It doesn't magically make it "intrinsically linked" to a concept known in the mainstream for years prior. You think that just because 4chan calls the exact same group of people a name it means it instantly becomes a new flavour of the month meme? What the fuck am I reading? Why would something that goes back decades change to a short temporary meme just because some people use a different name? You do know that each generation has had different names too right? Gen Z themselves have had different names like Centennials and Post-millenials used in the mainstream, Zoomer is just another name, it's no different.
>>5411182
It's used for the exact same thing though. Unless you think that 30 year old boomer is the same as baby boomer. Where do you think the term "Zoomer" came from?

It's a flavour of the month" because it's a forced meme that wasn't around a couple month ago, and originated from a shitty wojak edit of the "boomer" wojak that on its own was born in a middle of last year

>> No.5411208

You didn't read the post did you? Please read it this time instead of ignoring it, because I addressed what you just said. Hint: calling an existing group of people a new name out of the tons they already have isn't a new "forceful meme". More importantly the post in question didn't have any wojak edits so why the hell do you keep bring it up when it's clear it was using the word just to refer to gen z people?

Why would the word go out of fashion like you claim it will when it's one of the many names given to something that already dates back 7 years? Especially when before Zoomer, this site was always complaining about millennial instead? That one's still used. Who cares where the word originated from? What matters is that they have settled, and their use isn't something as feeble and temporary as a "flavour of the month meme" considering generational names are pretty much in perpetual use in general. It's not comparable to, say, rage comics or cockmongler, because generational names have an actual use, a very, very common use. Just because you don't like where it originated from doesn't mean it matters at all or that it's temporary like you WANT it to be. You can thank the fact that this site was already making fun of gen z people before so why would they stop now that they have a "proper" name of their own?

personal edit/collection/frankenmod of smooth doom + some shit from around zdoom forums + filling and drawing the missing parts myself

>shotgun slot - long barreled ssg
>ssg slot - automatic shotgun
>chaingun slot - ak47 that shoots two times faster (but same flinch rate)
>rl slot - grenade launcher, akin to final doomer one
>plasma slot - similar but shoots lasers instead of balls
>bfg slot - vanilla

custom monsters/decorations/shit cut out to not interfere with custom wads. I wanted a pure weapon set mod that feels good and couldn't find one that didn't bother me in many ways. And i also wasn't satisfied with vanilla shotguns balance.

uploaded it for archive purposes but maybe someone will want to check it out

forgot about pistol - buffed firerate and damage to compensate for loss of standard shotgun and increased chance of wasting shell ammo

Seems neat, two things tho:

First, it keeps crashing when I switch to whatever weapon's after the BFG or before the chainsaw (assuming there's a new weapon in this mod, if not it just seemingly crashes when swapping between the BFG/chainsaw).

Second, I'd prefer a pump action shotty as opposed to a semi auto one, but that's just my preference.

well there's a surefire way to know the mapper didn't know how or care enough to actually balance their level

what is the best way to play vanilla doom
at least vanilla in terms of mechanics
and also play wads and what not

If you wanna go full vannila, there's DOSBOX for you.
If you want vanilla without DOSBOX, then there's Chocolate Doom
If you want vanilla, but without engine limitations, then your choice is Crispy Doom.
If you want vanilla, but with more compatibility and settings, then go with PrBoom+.

I know the thread says webms for other boards but wouldn't it be better to post it on the vidya webm thread? It makes it easier to find.

You think so? Maybe I'll do that in the future, I just default for webms for other boards.

Yeah I'm always keeping an eye out for the vidya webm threads, whereas the webm for other boards thread doesn't really have things I'm interested in for the most part.

new doom mapper here, what's the proper procedure for doing credits?
>where do they go?
>do i credit the software i use?
>if i use resources from another wad do i just credit the wad and creator or do i have to track down his sources?
>any other things a plebian might not think about?

i usually just have the credits in a readme and forum post if i do any

crediting software is neat but not needed
tracking down sources is preferable but sometimes things just constantly pass hands and nobody knows where they came from
crediting is a very good practice but 90% of the time people will mostly just be happy with you not claiming that you invented everything, don't sweat a lot of the details

>> No.5412148

>>5412061
Look at the text files that come with wads on idgames, there's an "additional credits" section. As well as a "tools used" section. You can download a template file from the site.
