Indy just means an independent developer. Yes, they were technically independent, working on their own IPs where the publisher was essentially interchangeable. If you wanted to publish the next Quake game then you had to give iD a good deal.

shareware is a lost art. Getting the first 10%-25% of the game for free with all features and then buying it from there was amazing. Demo discs at Pizza Hut were the peak of freebies until it all went down hill and EA done fucked it all up.

Together they made great games, separated, Carmack makes solid, but soul less games, and Romero makes promising, but disastrous games. Carmack is like a robot, all brains, no heart or soul, and Romero is a disembodied soul, full of heart, but lacking anything solid, including brains.

The majority of old PC devs could be considered “indie” esp in the UK. We’ve come full-circle now with the recent indie game explosion.

The idea of indie devs only makes sense now, where you have either mega-developers like EA or Ubisoft who employ thousands of people on every continent, or 3 person teams who don't even have offices, with almost nobody in between.

when I was a 7 year gamemaker 5 fuck you were just a 'game designer'. Most of us made games that were just a four-direction stolen sprite moving around and hitting shit but it was garage-tier shit and a lot of 'designers' made good shit. I think Id was in the same vein of doing it out of their homes for nobody but themselves, it was indie before indie.
