You mean the crappy second version, yes? The first version stomps, and one has to be an idiot to break it.

I just found a wiki of consoles even more obscure than the Casio Loopy

CDi was more than a console really, it was supposed to be a new media format that evolved from CD, essentially just another of the many attempts at digital media that died off once DVDs came around. The console association happened because while the format wasn't originally sold as game hardware, games ended up as the most popular software, so they hastily changed things to try and make the most of it.

The 3DO as a console was solid and an amazing piece of tech considering when it came out. The problem was most of the library sucks but there are some great games for it.

>3DO

Not a bad idea in theory. The hardware was solid for a console that launched in 1993. The 3DO wasn't convoluted like the Sega Saturn, and used an ARM60 for a CPU, and has its own custom math and DSP processors. The system relied heavily on DMA channels for transfering data, the mother board has 36 of them.

The problem was the high price. Trip Hawkins kind of treated the 3DO like Nvidia or AMD would with video cards. They would develop the technology and license it out to companies like Panasonic, Goldstar and Sanyo. 3DO would handle the software, marketing and other things. But the stacked licencing fees did make it over priced, as 3DO and the hardware manufacturers would take their cuts.

>>5401586

Ironically, the 3DO is actually worth having now. It's much cheaper, and all the games are both released, and cheap.

It just needs to be RGB modded, and needs a 240p switch installed.

I was pretty interested in 3DO in 1995 actually, fighting games are my favorite genre and ST and Samurai Shodown was coming there on ports that, at the time, were pretty impressive. Of course the price was too damn high so I pass, but there were some people that they were legitimately interested in the console. ST was exclusive on 3DO for three years before it was released on PS/SS.

Because the Phillips CD-i and Commodore CDTV did so well the year before. Radio Shack tried to cash in as well.
