If anything the series is quite respected among the FGC, at least vsav is. People joke about how dead the series is despite its quality, not because of it.

Vampire Savior/Darkstalkers 3 was really the turning point for the series tone wise. Vampire and Vampire Hunter generally were silly with their animations the concept and promotional art had that "realistic" look of the early Street Fighter art with emphasis on darker colors and shadows to play up the horror theme. With the third game the art style changed to a more general "anime" look. You can really see it comparing the poster in the OP to this one. Morrigan happened to be the character with the most apparent change as her fan servicey nature was played up a bit more compared to either the silliness or light horror feel of the earlier games. She went from a character who happened to be sexy to a character who is about being sexy.

I dunno I just liked Darkstalkers 2 a lot more than 3 having played both for the first time just last summer through Resurrection.

Didn't care about the super transformation thing in Darkstalkers 3---it was okay but nothing I felt was missing from 2.
I didn't care for the Killer Instinct style of rounds, where it's just two health bars that don't refill---again, it's not bad to deal with, but I'd rather just have normal rounds.
I preferred the monk to B. Hood as a sort-of guest character. He was actually pretty interesting to fight against, whereas Hood is just annoying. I also felt like Lilith didn't add anything special to being in the game, and Q. Bee was just a sharper Lord Raptor, so I didn't like her being in either; and it might just be me, but I think Jedah is straight up not well designed, which might have to do with the character I play, as I felt Jedah was lacking in options. It's like Darkstalkers 2's roster felt largely complete, but then Darkstalkers 3 just messily added some more.
Fetus of God is easily the coolest stage of both the games, with the neatest aesthetic and hypest track, but all the other stages in the game just really pale in comparison, whereas Darkstalkers 2 had majority stages I could enjoy fighting on, like the snowy one with an igloo in the back.
I can't say whether 2 is just a better designed game than 3, but I know I certainly prefer it overall. However, I felt like the music peaked in the first Darkstalkers and just got progressively worse.

Most people generally prefer 3 these days, but 2 was actually the peak of the series' popularity and at the time of 3's release a lot of people who had played 1 and 2 had mixed reactions to it.

Eh, I'm not shy about my love for games where you get abducted. Getting thrown into Seath's dungeon in Dark Souls, or getting kidnapped in Bloodborn is fairly recent stuff for example. I love Bad End stuff in particular though, like the lose screens in arcade Ninja Gaiden or NES's Conquest of the Crystal Palace.
