What do you think happened to it? was it trashed?

>> No.5395183

There are several interviews translated about it.
It went through multiple phases and ended in development hell.
Went from 64DD to standard cart to just being cancelled.
IIRC, Itoi said the only 30% of the game was ever developed: Tazmily, and some other locations like the desert.
The only english-speaking guy that worked on GBA's Mother 3 got to play the prototype at Nintendo's HQ, and he said he only played the first part of the game in Tazmily.

How many potentially good games did that thing ruin?

I think the biggest one that started development as 64DD was Ocarina of Time.
I don't know, there were other interesting games that were canned and I don't think were going to be for 64DD, like Jungle Taitei/Kimba.

as I recall, wasn´t Zelda OTT 64dd released as the master quest? maybe that peripheral would´ve been awesome if nintendo actually supported it.

URA Zelda was more or less split up into Majora's Mask (Zelda Gaiden) and Master Quest

Unironically I feel like the weird 3d polygonal graphics would've helped the story instead of the pretty sprite-art we eventually got.

I wonder why it was canned. The N64 desperately needed any jarpig it could get, unless Nintendo was aware that nothing could help put the N64 back on the Japanese map.

It was originally supposed to be the main game but after 64DD sales turned sour they retooled the game for standard cart while keeping the leftovers (URA Zelda) as a potential expansion like f-zero x got, then 64DD died entirely so they ended up just using the leftovers for Majora's Mask and even Wind Waker/Twilight Princess.

I never thought of it that way. The polygons we've seen look pretty bad, and the sprite art was both well done and in line with the series' overall style. But yeah maybe the polygons would fit the supposedly darker story M64 would feature better.

There are prototypes in private hands of Brownie Brown. A fan by the name of OKeijiDragon interviewed Brendan Sechter, a debugger on Mother 3, who said he played it.

>Brendan: Well, the president of Brownie Brown said that if I want to try out the N64 prototype, it’s in the meeting room. I wasn’t a Mother fan, but I was trying be enthusiastic about my position there, so I tried it out. As far as I can recall, it was most of the first chapter (with a very Flintstones feel) and some cut scenes. The game crashed toward the end of the chapter.

>When I was looking for the link to event I attended, I saw some screenshots of the N64 version that I didn’t remember. Either I have a faulty memory, or there was more to that prototype than I thought. In any case, it was clearly the same vision as the GBA game. I suspect it is in a drawer or a box at Brownie Brown, unless HAL or Nintendo repossessed the cart.

>Brownie Brown had a stock N64 in their meeting room. The game was stored on what appeared to be a rewritable N64 development cartridge.

>The program on the cart appeared to be very much an alpha build. If it had been moderately ready for a release, I suspect it would have been released for the N64. As things were, the GBA version of Mother 3 was pushed out the door as the platform was being buried. I’d say chances are slim to none that the public will ever get to meet the N64 prototype.

MML was on N64.
The N64 was capable of better 3D than PS (no surprise, it was released almost 2 years later).
Look at the drago screenshot third from the left on the 2nd line, that looks far more complex than any models on MML, which is all overly square. All models on Mother 3 look rather rounder, except for some pointy limbs and hands.
