When you think about it, this game is underrated.
It's unfairly compared to Yoshi's Island when the concepts of both games are entirely different, like comparing SMB2(USA) to SMB3.
Sure, YI is a more memorable game, but Story has some great elements on its own.
The story mode is short.. sure, only 6 levels, but as you play more, you unlock more levels, the total comes off as 24 levels! It's totally unfair to judge this game by only having played 6 out of 24 levels, isn't it?

Anyway, Yoshi's Story appreciation thread. No need to say how inferior it is to YI, this thread is to talk about Story only!

Even my mum and sister love that game. And they usually think video games are a waste of time.

>> No.537980

I agree, OP. This game is charming and fun. It has some great "feel good" tunes and on top of that has some decent to great gameplay.

The problem is that not much about the game is excellent like Yoshi's Island was. You can't blame people for comparing the two.

I wish the game would have used a more classic level system like Yoshi's Island, instead of that weird "You can only play 4 levels out of 16 per playthrough"

It's not like those different level take you somewhere else. If you choose World 1-4 instead of World 1-1, you still end up in World 2 the same way.

>> No.538619

Tried to emulate it but it glitched a lot graphically. Aside from that it seemed really boring

not trying to be edgy or anything, but the game is honestly just too childish for me. the song with the yoshis singing just sounds so freaking cutesy and lame. i feel like im playing a game for preschoolers

Yup. To say that it was disappointing is an understatement. Yoshi's Island is surreal and original. This disaster is just disgusting.

Always loved Yoshi's Story. Just wish there was a way to play all 24 levels in one go... never did get 6-4 itself, though.

re: paths: the idea is that you can play all the level 1s, all the level 2s, etc.

>> No.538653

That was my favorite game as a kid. I played it through about 6 or 7 times as a kid, it took me about a week each time.

Replayed it a few months ago, and blasted through in under an hour. I sucked at games as a small child.

But that's just it anon. The structure is way off, so complaining about only 6 levels is legitimate. You only get a handful of levels to play through, and the game's over before you know it. And even when you replay and replay and replay to unlock all the other levels and all the other yoshis, you have 24 total levels? That's so lackluster and a telltale sign it was either rushed or should have been held up for the GC. Not to mention it's been 4924756476 years now and we have yet to have a genuine sequel or remake?

>> No.541014

I like Yoshi's Story a bit, but I'd like it quite a bit more if were more challenging, levels were completed by getting to the end and maybe fighting a boss instead of just eating fruit, and you either went through all the levels, or there was some incentive to replay and take different paths. As is, the paths are completely arbitrary, and that's just dumb.

There's just not much to the game.
I guess I liked the health and life systems more than what Yoshi's Island had.
I guess the game controlled very well, maybe even better than Yoshi's Island.
I guess the art-style was pretty good, about on par with Yoshi's Island.
That's all the good I can say for it.

No, it's not legitimate to complain about a "short game" that is actually pretty long.
What they tried to do witht he "you can only do 6 levels per playthrough" was so that you could kind of make your own story... you see, when you beat the last boss, you can see the whole tale recapped from level 1 to the last, and it changes depending on which level you took... but yeah, it does feel rushed and that it could have been much better (maybe even change things about the story depending on different things you can do in the levels, etc). But let's forget about the game's presentation... forget about story mode, after all it's just another mode, if you play Trial Mode, you've got 24 full levels, and they're pretty long too, especially considering is a game based on exploration and collection, not "go from point A to point B" kind of platformer.

It'd be a legitimate complain to say that you don't like the story mode, but to say the game only has 6 levels, no, it's not a complain, it's just wrong.

>>541014

There's your problem, you still keep comparing it to Island all the time!
Stop thinking about Island, and just judge this game for what it is. It does have some pretty awesome control schemes (being able to use your tongue 360 degrees, or all the different tings you can use in the levels like the propeller platform or the tulips).
The art style is completely lovely, I don't get why some people complain it's "too childish", and that Yoshi's Island isn't childish but suddenly psychedelic?.... nah, they are both games made for kids. The fact is, they're pretty fucking good and can be enjoyed by people all ages.

I don't know. I loved this game when it came out. Was fun trying to get the black and white Yoshis. Sure it was cute, but for the system and time, those graphics were pretty cutting edge even if cutesy. Nobody had done blue jeans as realistically. And not really again until Kirby's Epic Yarn.

I saw the cutesy as a welcomed break from all the regular stuff that was around then. Everything was dark and gritty, and here comes this Yoshi game with more sweet than a candy shop.

The controls were good, the music memorable, and it was fun. Inb4 Nostalgia claims, I was probably 17 when I played this. Could be some nostalgia, but I think it is more due to how refreshing it was to have a cute simple game like this and Parappa after the abundance of Dark and Gritty the 3 or 4 years prior.

Recently played it emulated. To answer >>538619 if you use the Glide 64 plugin it fixes all the graphical errors, with the exception of one level that had a river, and the boundary between the air and water was fucked up.

The soundtrack was great, except...

I'm gonna get hate for this, but I didn't like the Yoshi chorus because that one Yoshi was off-key and it ruined it for me.

Unfortunately I couldn't 100% it because I don't have a controller and there's a mechanic that requires flicking the stick, but what I did play was cute and if I ever started collecting games I'd make sure to get this one to play it properly.

I do prefer Yoshi's Island, but this game is just fine to model the Wii U Yoshi game after.

I still like this game. I set up a work system with my mom in order to earn money for the game; equated to a couple weeks of lawn mowing and dishes.

It's irrational hate though, as OP said, it's because people expect it to be Yoshi's Island.

Saying Yoshi's Story is short is like saying Mario 3D land is short. It takes maybe 2 hours to beat M3DL, but then you get the hidden world, and the coins, and the flags, and Luigi...

Once you've gotten 30 melons on every stage (and found both hidden Yoshis), then you can see if the game is really that short.

It is a legitimate complaint, when in no way is it inferred nor explained that the game is a "make your own story" game. Out-of-the-box, the game appears to be extremely short, and you must tediously unlock new levels per play through. The audience saw this as cheap, unwanted lengthening; the formula was not massively accepted. It's a legitimate complaint because it obviously didn't set well enough with gamers. It's a legitimate complaint because it's what consumers complained about.

The truth is most people don't care about such things as trail mode, and I personally believe such a score system works great with something that you are continually moving along unlike in Yoshi's Story which as you said has a lot to do with exploring.

I personally think the game is alright, but it is short and easy with very little incentive for the player to try to collect all of the melons in the level.
