What's the deal with the neo-geo /vr/?

Why was so expensive?

What about the hardware,it was really that good?

Also, what about the games? The majority was good or bad.

Let's talk about this rich boy.

>> No.538563

It was a fucking MVS redesigned as a home console.

That's why the price is so high.

About the games,I don't know,I never had one.

Where I live having a Neo Geo was synonym of being fucking god.

>> No.538592

>>538537
Its a fucking home arcade machine. The sticks are clicky. Those are the main reasons for the high prices.

All games are fighters and Metal Slug.

you clearly never heard of Garou Mark of the motherfucking wolves

>> No.538615

The thing cost about 90 billion dollars (adjusted for inflation) back in its day, and it was never a huge commercial hit. So that's why the things are expensive now, plus I understand they're just fighting games. I've never had the desire to own one. But if you're into fighters and arcade games, this is your machine

>> No.538617

It was 2D that the fucking SATURN could barely handle... in 1990. It was arcade hardware in a console shell in a way that one-ups whatever Sega was trying to do, before they actually did it.

The majority of games were good, or at least pretty fun to play. The worst Neo Geo game I can think of is Ghost Pilots.

What means "level 4"?

I saw that many times in arcade games and I never knew what it means.

>> No.538642

Arcade HW stuffed in home console. Great controllers. Most games are of the classic arcade variety (fighters, shooters, platformers, racing, sports) and for all matters practical, it's one of those consoles that only people with friends will enjoy, because most games are meant to be played against/with people.
Console itself isn't all that expensive, you can get it for like $200, but most games range from $40 to $400. Luckily most of the good games are on the cheaper side of the spectrum.

>> No.538678

The console was made for hotels and shit like that, I don't think many people could afford to buy one for personal use back then

>> No.538691

I had one when I was a kid.
Then my father lost his job and we had to sell the console and the house.

>> No.538695

>>538629
Neo Geo games usually have 5 difficulty levels ranging from Very Easy to MVS. MVS (level 5) is basically "get a whole lot of coins, because you will spend more time at continue screen than in game".

>>538652
Which is a good reason to get one NOW.

>> No.538705

The base console might not be expensive anymore, but the games are probably x2 whatever they were before. The whole collection thing is out of control there.

>> No.538768

>>538705
Rare games are expensive as hell, but classics like SamSho, Magician Lord and most KoF are pretty cheap. Even Metal Slug games converted from MVS to AES carts are cheap-ish (around 200 bucks compared to thousands that original will cost). And MVS converters aren't expensive either, although some MVS games are now somewhat expensive compared to JP AES carts. So unless you are hell-bent on having originals complete in box and preferably mint, then you can build really nice starter Neo Geo collection for like 500 bucks. Also go buy Riding Heroes, it's racing RPG. RACING RPG!

>> No.538850

As a fighting game fan I love this console but It has good non fighting games too. I have been collecting neo geo since 2003 but I havent bought a game in the last few years

>> No.539105

I want to buy one of these.

Mostly for the fighting games and MS.

But I still can't decide between the original neo geo or the neo geo X (the handheld)

>> No.539132

NGX is just emulator console with clicky thumbstick. If you can find used one for $100 or less then go ahead, but it's only usable as handheld, TV out is outright broken.

Aside from all the multiplat AAA crap, the PS3 has a pretty good library of exclusives now, provided you like JRPGs to begin with, same for the PSP. The Vita's a beautiful disaster, though.

the arcade at home theory is bullshit, the dreamcast is an exact consolized version of the Naomi, and it was a normal price for the console.

also the consoles are all 100+, too much for a retro game console

It's all well and good that you're eager to demonstrate your clear lack of understanding of arcade hardware, but that's completely and totally wrong.

The hardware of the Neo Geo console itself was impressive for its time, and each and every game cartridge consisted of more than just memory chips containing game data like you'd find in other consoles.

That's part of the reason the Dreamcast is the pinnacle of video games, though, it represented the exact moment that home consoles reasonably caught up to the arcades with standard hardware, while arcade games were still at their peak.

Just finished playing Crossed Swords. It's pretty fun but I must admit I save scummed (it lets you save all your stats once you run out of continues). It's a shame they didn't make more games in this style (except for Super Spy and CS2 on CD).

>> No.547305

...Except that it has many more times the exclusives compared to the 360. The 360 is the one floundering in ports. It's basically port city plus: Halo, Gears of War, Fable. Only one of those franchises are worth a damn.

>>541497

The Vita has more games than people seem to perceive. I own about eight retail titles for it, which puts it just under my 3DS collection. I play the Vita more, though, as the games are more console-like and I don't have to put up with Nintendo's hurrrdurrrr single analog stick bullshit.

Saged for not-retro content.

Anyway, the AES is so expensive because it's a tiny MVS. What did you expect? IT had the best graphics of it's day, even the PC could suck it's nuts. Not many people owned one, so now it's more rare than the SNES or Genesis. On top of that, we're in the middle of a retro game bubble where everything has had it's price inflated a hundred times over. Wait two or three years and things will normalize.

The vita library is mostly just shitty ports of games on better systems(EDF, Rayman origins, ridge racer,Ninja gaiden ,Blazblu, if you think shitty super anime bros brawl is good.) the odd enhanced port(Persona 4) and one or two decent, but not good enough to buy a vita for, first party games(gravity rush, wipeout) and finally, we have shit(Uncharted:Gimmick edition, Disgaea 3, etc.)
