It's kind of /vr/, the original public beta for was in either '98 or '99, however at that time it was known as DeviousMUD. At that time I've read there were only about 20-30 players.

We'll never have the pure magic that was early RS from 2004 - 2007 ever again... Play OldSchool RS if you aren't already, it's as close as we'll ever get before Jagex shuts down and source code is leaked out from there 2007 backups.

there was a short taste of it when they launched OSRS, that pure 07 backup was beautiful

Any MMO that actually requires some kind of social contact is always a plus in my book. I used to play MMOs and come away with so many gaming contacts, now it's a struggle to even get a response if I say hello to somebody in-game.

For that reason I've wanted to get more into MUDs but I find them so incredibly unforgiving in terms of mechanics, it's a shame because their communities are often the most tight-knight and welcoming.

>> No.5384304

>>5384268
Honestly I get that response often, people will teleport away or even log off. I understand that not everybody wants to engage all the time but It's a bit upsetting that every MMO I try is 90% these people and the other 10% want me to join their Discord\Vent\IRC\Forums before they'll throw a sentence back at me.

I guess trends come and go, eventually it'll be fashionable to interact with your fellow gamer again.

>get more into MUDs
Try starting out on something like Aardwolf or Alter Aeon. They both have pretty good intro areas/mud schools, fairly standard syntax that will make picking up any other mud easier, and big populations. Only downside I have with them is that they are fairly ordinary, not bad just average fantasy stuff.
Discworld mud also has a good intro, a decent amout of players, and is just cool because it is Discworld but some of the syntax takes a little to get used to if you are fresh into muds. Finally I would say try out Lost Souls, absolutely no intro/mud school area, thrown into the deep end with just help files, an admitedly decent wiki, and a throw away character to mess around with but it is by far my favorite mud once you get into it for sheer depth and wierdness.

New EQ progression servers are opening up for the 20th anniversary. They look like shit though, even by progression server standards. Plus they'll be even further ruined by Krono farmers. It's kind of sad to see what EQ has become, hopefully somebody who cares about the franchise buys it once Daybreak goes bankrupt.

That looks real comfy, OP.

Here's Dransik - basically Ultima 5, MMO style. Free to play and still online, though the player base is tiny these days, and the forums are basically dead.

The thing I remember most about it is the absolutely majestic music. Easily some of the finest midi I've ever heard.

The problem is they're all 14 and trying to get that "close knit friend group" we had without realizing that we didn't have login noises and all that weird shit. You had to like, keep track of these guys and remember their names and stylings and shit.

Now everything just tracks you across any and all alts and servers and shit and everything is designed to just pick up and go, you don't NEED to socialize anymore.

And like you said, they all just want the biggest Discord. It's the nerd version of likes or Upvotes, to have a fat Discord.
Really, MMORPGs are just a glorified Facebook these days.

Furcadia was so weird, it had a really solid Ultima-bro programmer behind it. (Dr. Cat) and yeah it was a Furry paradise, but being able to create your own worldspace was pretty advanced for its time, but there was nothing to actually do with the spaces. You couldn't set up experiences. It was a glorified chatroom with no interactivity.

Would any of you be interested in starting an MMO together? It could be an old one with a muted population but if we can scramble 5 people together that'd be something.

In the past I've done this with /v/ with great success but nowadays our schedules are likely more hectic so I propose we all join the same game and share our experiences but not necessarily play the game together. If we can get 5 people to all filter into the game then that's a nice amount of discussion\screenshots that can be generated. If we can all make 1 in-game contact then that's a pool of 10 people with which to do things.

That was the craziest thing. It had solid tech behind it, it was legitimately impressive, even 5 years after its initial release.

...But there was no game to be played. All you could do was build pretty, but ultimately sterile spaces with nothing to do in them beyond chat to other players.

...Which I guess is *fine* if you're just a furry who wants to roleplay getting pounded in the ass by an anthro wolf, but holy fuck, what a missed opportunity. Even if they wanted to keep Furcadia purely as faggoty roleplay chat server, why didn't they develop an actual game on the same tech? They could have been filthy rich.

Player run religions sound great. In Ultima Online I once apprenticed myself to a guy who worshipped bears. He would take all his clothes off and get hit once, then proceed to pray to them, finally we'd go to town and ask for alms to heal his festering bear wounds.
