I'd say Sega's games conform more to the established mores of the videogame medium. They were more conventional. So if you are a conventional videogame player then Sega has a lot to offer you. Nintendo's games were always trying to expand the audience, so they went for games that would have universal appeal. You didn't have to be a videogame fan to enjoy a Nintendo game.

I get what you're saying and I agree with your statement that one shouldn't limit itself to develop a better taste but the reality is that there are so many games on so many platforms that it's hard to get down and take the time to play even the so-called essentials, let alone more games so a lot of people just keep it to one or two brands because they'd get stuck in an avalanche of games and I haven't even started on playing modern games or having other hobbies or other reasons to make it harder to spend enough time to play games decently instead of just booting them up for a few minutes and then change it for something else.

I used to be like you and wanted to try as much games as possible and yes, some games can still be amazing to you if you're not nostalgic to them or if it's not even your preferred genre or style but I gave up on it and just try to find some time in a month to try out 1 or 2 of those that I got some time ago. That goes for both physical releases and digital/emulated ones in my opinion.

You're almost on the right track. Nintendo is for anyone, including women or small children, whereas Sega is for men with distinguished taste. Nintendo was the king of conventional, everyone knew there would be a Mario and Zelda game with each console. Sega on the other hand was surprising and creative.

The concept of the ad is off, they should have put an attractive girl there but something else to do with videogames. The guy should be muscular. This ad says to me more "fuck me don't be like that loser playing videogames". Also, the photographer or whoever set up the shot could have made her look more sexy at least by today's standards. Also as much as I dislike saying this I think it was a mistake to market to adults, they should have stuck with kids. Adults only care about videogames if they have played them all their lives and even then it's a much easier sell of new videogames to kids even today.
