>Try to keep things /vr/ related: Focus should be on 5th Gen (+Dreamcast) games on back. Slight off topic is fine so long as it's related to CRTs, such as later 16:9 models, HD models, etc. Systems with backwards compatibility are also safe territory, as are re-releases on newer hardware. PC CRTs are also welcome and appreciated.
>Produce OC! Bust out your camera and take photos of your CRTs displaying all sorts of games, featuring all sorts of tubes, using all sorts of signals. Getting good shots can be hard, but if you take enough, at least a few will turn out alright. Tips'n'Tricks™ coming soon.
>Try and give as much information as possible when asking for info on a specific set, or troubleshooting an issue to expedite and help you may receive. As always, Google is your friend and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either; Seriously, there's literally 6 years of backlog at this point.
>Share appreciation for other's choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. Always remember to show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Limited discussion of video processing and scaling devices is alright, but remember to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories.

So I just inherited my Grandfathers old 1993 FUNAI 13 color TV when I helped him hook up his new LCD he just got and it only has an RF port on the back. Just curious on how most people play Composite games on these kinds of TV's. I assume most people use a VCR right?

Couldn't find an image of one online even when I typed the model # in, but this is pretty much identical to what it looks like.

Alright, I fell for the meme because of you guys. I drove around 50 miles yesterday and got this 25" Trinitron in very good condition and with the original remote. The guy was asking for 40 dollars, but we settled for 30 (approximation from my country currency).
Unfortunately it doesn't have RGB input, but at least it has S-Video. Only two inputs, one on the back (either composite or S-Video) and one on the front (composite). Surprisingly for me it has a 3.5mm headphone jack on the front, which will actually be useful.
It's a KV-25FV10B. I was wondering how you get to that screen to adjust the geometry. It has some green and red squares with dots on the middle. I'll be glad if someone could help.

Ran into a minor problem with my tv. I got my Famicom working and I need to tune to channel 96 for it to work over RF. However my Sony Wega only goes up to channel 88. Any ideas? I read online that I could just use a VCR to receive the RF signal over channel 96 and then output at channel 3. I don't have a VCR at the moment, are there any other workarounds? I've been playing on a Westinghouse HDTV that does have channel 96 and it's only reaffirming my love for CRTs.

No, I don't have anything to play on at the moment. I'm thinking of getting a PS2 to play PS1 and a few SNES games. Does it run those systems well? And does it do 240p properly while emulating? The fact that it's built on a the G1 chassis also makes me think it should be fine taking whatever resolution. I'd say it's definitely worth grabbing either way, given that it's free.

It's your standard 70khz office CRT.

Nice for Dreamcast and older PC games, maybe 720p from a console if you can put up with the letterboxing. 1080p is technically within it's horizontal frequency limit, but isn't going to look good.

Recommended resolutions for PC usage would be 1024x768@85hz or 1152x864@75hz. 1280x960@70 would be right at the edge and the monitor may not even let you do it; You won't be resolving much extra at that point over the other two though.

It doesnt even have a VGA port, its ANCIENT.
I can't find it on ebay so i dont know how much its worth. Its monochrome.
What should i do with it? i dont want to let it rot, i want to sell it to someone who appreciates it.

Here in Iowa thrift stores stopped taking them probably 10 years ago. They cost more to recycle than they are worth and no one wants to buy them. Old PC crts were trashed without any fanfare because anyone can carry them far enough to throw them in a dumpster or on the curb. Bigger consumer CRTs only exist because someone didn't want to move them from a spare bedroom or are too old and feeble to lift them.

They are the deadest of dead tech for the average consumer. Even multi thousand dollar sets are now just junk for kids to watch movies on when they stay with grandma.

You would have to be at minimum 35 or so to even remotely have a chance of having kept one you bought when they were current tech.

Just got myself a PC CRT for free. This thing is 17in from 2003 and is somehow sharper than my 19in from 1999. How is that even possible? Both use phosphor dots. And I thought COMPAQ was supposed to be a budget alternative (the other one is Sylvania, but still). Pretty cool, regardless.

Hey sorry I only half read your post, I'm >>5382914

S-video to composite is easy using a cheap adapter.
If you want s-video to component as in YPbPr, don't bother. The adapters out there are either for a different kind of s-video plug (7 pin), or will introduce input lag and look just as bad as s-video to composite.

>> No.5382951

>>5382920
I'm only interested in s-video --> component conversion since I can get composite video at the source.
If the source signal is 480i then the dvd recorder does the job. The image doesn't have dot crawl or checkerboarding. I haven't noticed lag but I haven't tested for it. The problem is that for consoles that output 480i (PS2, Xbox, Wii) I already have component cables.
I was interested in converting s-video to component when using SNES, modded Genesis, N64 with s-video output. But the problem is that 240p gets interlaced by the recorder. I guess the alternative would be to find a RGB --> component transcoder.

>> No.5382971

>>5382951
There isn't much of an advantage.
Composite video encodes everything on a single channel.
S-video encodes everything on two channels: Y (luma) and C (chroma).
Component encodes everything on three channels: Y (luma), Pb (blue - luma), and Pr (red - luma).

Mixing channels down (component -> s-video -> composite) is easy because you're doing little more than smashing signals together. If you go the opposite direction, you're taking a lower quality signal and splitting it across channels without the benefit of having a multi-channel source. It's like converting a compressed JPG to a PNG: sure, it's now a higher quality format, but it's still visually identical to the source.

In the case of s-video to component, your DVD recorder is carrying the Y (luma) signal and splitting the C (chroma) signal into Pb and Pr. If done really well, this is technically a modest improvement over a single-line composite, but it really depends on one thing: Which is better implemented, your video game system's composite line or your dvd recorder's C -> Pb + Pr line? I couldn't tell you but I have a feeling your game system composite is better.

>> No.5382997

>>5382951
You're at a loss hardware wise. DVD recorders can work well for converting composite and s-video sources to component, and some of them can even do basic upscaling to 480, 720p, and 1080i and output over component or HDMI. But they aren't straight transcoders, and are designed to output NTSC 480i or higher.

You can get a new tv or video monitor with s-video ports. Keeping your composite/component set, your best option for SNES and Genesis would be something like Retrovisions cables, which take those systems' native RGB and transcode it to component for easy use with North American tvs. For unmodded N64, you'd be stuck with composite only in this setup.

After a lot of experimenting, I've determined that I prefer the look of composite video over component/RGB, especially for Genesis and PS1. Anything better than that just exposes all the checkerboard patterns and other tricks used for dithering effects and fake transparencies, making games look far blockier than intended, and at that point I honestly think playing on an LCD with something like CRT-Hyllian looks better. Who else has abandoned the RGB meme and finally realized that composite offers a much more accurate experience, with a ton more graphical effects that are completely lost when the clarity is improved?

Heres part two:
http://creepingnet2017.blogspot.com/2017/01/misadventures-in-electronics-repair_20.html?m=1
He did the soldering but not really sure if the end result it's the current thing we know as vga.. he did mentions though a certain "vga mode" on the second part...
He did mentions this one was ahead of its time with the over 640 res.
Feeling optimistic about it but not sure if too much of a hassle.
Should i get a more recent vga crt monitor from the 2000s instead?

Not really but it's kind of a rabbit hole unless you get lucky in finding one. I found a pretty nice professional CRT where I work a few months ago but nowadays I mostly prefer using my OSSC on a modern TV since the CRT was kind of small and I decided that it wasn't as huge of a difference as everybody was claiming it was. Also, what kind of setup does the monitor input needs to have to not "burn" the monitor on first start.
Reducing the resolution its a must, but something extra like.. should I reduce the color on PC, should I reduce the Hz. on the pc etc. ?

What are the limitations on this type of monitor while using current media? Does it look really blocky in terms of FPS?

I want it to use for retro emulation mostly, but what happens if I throw out a modern PC game in Fullscreen on it? Or throw in a Dreamcast fullscreen emulation on it i.e.

Does the framerate would be useless compared to the needed on fast paced games?

Thanks

A week ago, before getting my first CRT in years I thought the same thing, that a regular LCD panel with crt-royale was all you needed to enjoy old games, and that CRTs were just a meme by nostalgia hungry boomers, but once I got a Trinitron and played some games I was impressed. The colors, the contrast, the sound, everything made me feel I was in my childhood playing my SNES or a real PS1. Maybe it's just the fire of a new toy to play with, but it certainly looks, sounds and feels better to play on it than it ever did while emulating on a computer.

And even when you do find good bargains (medical auctions are a great place to look) the monitors are often either lumped in with medical equipment/other monitors you won't use, or furniture, which can turn a hidden gem into a bidding war (with the other bidders not giving a shit about the monitor, they just want the A/V cart it's sitting on or the endoscopy machine it comes with). >> No.5385260

>>5383084
Nah. I'm debating this myself, but I'm a pleb who prefers s-video when he can get it because RGB just seems like a wasteful hassle for only marginal better quality. If I could RGB-mod composite sets that'd be a different story, but it's also a different discussion. The biggest killer of composite for me is the dot crawl, it causes color bleed over too many borders and noisy text that looks bad. I do respect some games look better through composite because of their various dithering effects like you said, and I'd rather play on a composite CRT than the best LCD, but something like s-video provides overall superior clarity without sacrificing the visual advantages of a CRT. Even on a high-end RGB set with a high TVL count, the CRT will do the splotchiest checkerboarded game more justice than an LCD with any filter applied.

>> No.5385298

>>5385260
RGB looks better than s-video due to the fact it has fixed phase and chroma, and no color bleed, solving all three of the main issues of s-video.
I don't get how you can't see how much those 3 issues negatively impact s-video signal output.

>> No.5385323

S-video simply doesn't look nearly as bad as composite and the step up to RGB is not worth the hoops you need to jump through to get it. RGB requires us burgers to pay out the ass for a meme set or learn to RGB mod, which isn't a simple operation.

Something I have wondered about CRTs for years: what is the maximum bit depth you can display on them?

Since CRTs are by nature an analog display device, wouldn't they have infinite bit depth? But how could you get one to display something like 30 bit color? Would it have to be designed with that feature in mind?

Not really.. If you want to go the RGB route, get a cheap extron switch on ebay, and the output of all your SCART input to the switch, can go through a Shinybow SCART to Component converter into your American set.

Considering that the UK folks would probably want a switch for multiple consoles anyway, the only real additional barrier is the Shinybow.

Just like collectors in the UK, the real hassle of RGB for all your consoles is the pricing of the cables. For me to hook up all my consoles with SCART and audio, I'm looking at like $60 in cabling for each system.

I think making them yourself was around $8-9 each with a sync stripper or $6 or 7 without. That's for the adapter like you have in pic. For each system it really depends. Some systems you can buy the cheapest most shit scart cable and at most have to do an audio breakout. Some systems do better with high quality like pack a punch. Usually CRT are far more forgiving and can get away with cheap scart cables for your systems.

Don't get me wrong, it's a real pain in the ass unless you like pissing around with old electronics and soldering and such. Even just shelling out cash and not modding yourself takes a lot of research and will turn you into an autist.

If you open it up the flyback transformer will have two pots on it, Focus and G2 (may be called screen). Adjust the brightness control to its middle setting then tweak the G2/Screen pot so there is a minimal amount of glow with no signal input.

Obviously avoid touching the big red cable and use a well insulated tool.

A PC CRT is

>still "zero" lag
>still has great contrast
>4:3 aspect ratio
>RGB
>equivalent or better TVL to best late-gen CRT production monitors
>often have very fine control of picture without needing service mode, some of the best even have digital convergence
>excellent geometry and focus from corner to corner, much better than the average consumer CRT or even production monitors
>robust design unlikely to ever fail (with notable exception of Trinitrons with g2 brightness issue)
and finally
>with use of RetroArch shaders can present an image which is extremely close to that which is seen on a production monitor, but can also be flexible with shader choices to emulate older, rougher looking CRTs with noise, lower TVL, and mask types.
and one more bonus, for those who are not slaves to "accuracy"
>useful for 3d games in higher rendering resolutions or high res texture packs

They're also quite a lot cheaper on the average, although I am betting that will be changing rather rapidly in the next few years as CRTs in general become more scarce and more realize what can be done with a PC CRT if you venture beyond the traditional dogma that has been perpetuated on this board and many others based off of notions that were partially-true a decade ago.

Those people are just going to buy a clone system and play the same 3 pleb games on their laggy LCD TV anyway. To hell with "most people".
