I always dismissed Super Mario RPG as trash because of the hideous DKC-style 3D rendered graphics, but I watched a speedrun of it recently and was shocked to discover:
>no random encounters
>action-based battle system with high skill ceiling
>great soundtrack with good sound quality by SNES standards
>great writing and localization (with jokes that are actually funny!)
>tolerable load times
I'm not actually going to play it (it's a JRPG, lol), but surely this has to be the objectively best example of the genre? Not even Chrono Trigger is this good.

Paper Mario Thousand Year Door is exactly like that and I know jarpig haters are going to laugh at this statement but that game has the smartest writing I've seen in any game. Extremely charming and clever.
Pic related is from Super Paper Mario which is an inferior game in my imo but still nice.

I hate that it's becoming more common to have overworld encounters. Ruined DQ.

DQ was always shti. Why do people pretend it's somehow better than Final Fantasy when in fact it manages to be even more generic, easy and boring somehow. The games are indistinguishable from each other apart from the clothes Toriyama made Goku wear each time around.

The action-based battle system is nice at first but then it becomes a nuisance to be frank. Sure, it is impressive to land I dunno how many jumps in a row but when you have to press a button every fucking time for an attack or spell it starts to get old very fast

It's not hard to judge jarpigs when the standards are so goddamn bottom-of-the-barrel low. Actually it would probably help if you fags had a little more objectivity and higher expectations.

is it bad that the only reason I've never played this supposedly great classic JRPG is that I fucking hate Mario? I'm not sure what it is about the franchise I despise but I can't get into any of the games because of the cast and setting (Donkey Kong is an exception as the DKC games are great)

DO IT FOR HER
I don't blame you nu-Mario is corporate approved, designed by committee rather than artists, completely safe and unwilling to take risks and has a very fake artificial feeling around it. I hate that soul-soulless zoomer cancer but that's one occasion where that meme perfectly applies.

I loved Super Mario RPG as a kid and still enjoy it now. That being said, I tried to play Earthbound recently and just could not get into it. I really, really wanted to like it and got the first 3 melodies, but I'm just not having fun. It feels like such a slog.

>people unironically playing real time games

Get a fucking job, seriously. And if you have one, work harder on either that or other aspects of your life. Turn based games are great because you can live a normal fucking life and use them as a way to pass the time occasionally. Real time games, and considering yourself a "gaming enthusiast" or a "gamer" is just disgusting.

Why do you think the most childish console manufacturer (Nintendo) is also the only Japanese manufacturer lacking in AAA JRPG development? Because their games are for children, just like anything else that's real time.

>> No.5374407

wow... deep. real time games ROCK

why would an adult want to "play" anyway? ask yourself

>> No.5374419

>>5374407
I'm not seeing it is deep, at least it's a step up from your average mediocre jarpig that plays itself while you hold down the fast forward button.

>> No.5374440

>>5374419
A step up to what? Requiring constant attention? That's a bad thing, and the reason that video games are mostly associated with unsuccessful nerds. There is no benefit of any kind to having the ability to press the button at the right time. If you devote time to "improving" at a video game, you're wasting time. Games are for fun and to pass time that isn't already being used for something positive.

JRPGs are well-designed so any salaryman, or other person with a busy life not devoted to video games, can pick them up and put them down as needed while making strategic decisions. There is no requirement to stay at your console or computer any longer than you wish to, there is no negative to interrupting the experience. This is very important if you have a wife, children, a full time job, real hobbies, and friends. The lack of online multiplayer is also crucial – the effect real-time online multiplayer games have had on people by tricking them into thinking they're having a social experience while sitting alone interacting with pixels has already been incredibly damaging to everyone who has grown up with it.

I think I'm qualified to say JRPGs are irredeemable trash. Only good JRPGs are those that stray away from everything people love about JRPGs, e.g. FromSoftware's titles, Vagrant Story, Shin Megami Tensei.
