The Half Life and then Halo era of video games was really the major turning point of the industry going to complete shit. These games revolutionized the industry, and not in a good way. It almost pretty cleanly marks the difference in philosophy between the PS1 and earlier era of retro games and then the XBOX / PS2 and later era of games.

Doom and Duke 3D were the real FPS games, the genre should have stayed on that road.

Those are indeed some of the best games of the time. Other great mods were vampire slayer and brainbread. VS was pretty unique and great at LANs, and Brainbread was a half-baked unfinished mess, but it somehow captured something fantastic that i felt was lost when the zombie-genre took off a couple years later. I think it's lack of polish actually contributed to its kino.
