Graphically this is worlds above the Secret of Mana remake. I'm no fan of the art style but the textures are good in the Link's Awakening remake. While I am not a fan of "mobile game" being used as a pejorative, the SoM mobile game does have a level of graphical fidelity that is comparable to actual mobile games such as Adventures of Mana and Rise of Mana. I did not play the SoM remake though so I don't know if people have any reason to hate it besides that.

Oot 3d fucks with atmosphere too much, even outside lighting and removal of blood, it does small stuff like removing tree textures from zora's fountain and the fishing hole, making jabu-jabu' breathing silent.
Textures in general are too clean in oot 3d. This is very noticeable in the well and shadow temple. Both look very dirty in the original versions, in oot 3d they look like the shadow temple has been washed recently.

Plus there's odd gameplay changes like nerfing deku sticks.

Some good remakes Nintendo has made in the past:
Metroid: Zero Mission
Metroid: Samus Returns
Metroid Prime Trilogy
Zelda: A Link Between Worlds (narratively a "sequel" but let's be real here)
Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D
Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D

The biggest difference between all of those and this Link's Awakening remake is that each of them ADDS something or CHANGES something. They have new features, new abilities, updated maps, updated controls... This "remake" feels like a glorified texture pack. Like a 3D graphical skin slapped onto the original game with no significant or interesting changes.

To add insult to injury, the art direction is bad. Why would they make everything look like toys or a diorama? It should have been some kind of cel-shaded style or sketchbook style; something that would capture an imaginative, dreamlike feeling. This art direction just seems to have zero real thought or heart put into it and it doesn't mesh with or enhance the themes or mood of the game, which makes it feel that much worse that it's just a straight rehash.

It was great to play 2d action metroid again, but i think it wasnt so much the style that turned me off as it was the fact that it was Metroid 2... its kind of hard to add variety to a game that was pretty repetitive to begin with and it lacked the same low tech spookiness that came with Gameboy's limited hardware.

Metroid Prime Trilogy is a step down. Also it's not a remake, just a Wii port of two games with a Wii game packed in as well.

Some effects were removed from Trilogy, for instance if you charge the ice gun in MP1 the gun will actually accumulate frost on GCN, but on Wii it does nothing.

Also you are making shit up about this not adding or changing anything, you've seen an intro trailer, one that even goes out of its way to mention that it doesn't show real gameplay.

And then you're claiming the art direction is bad when it's actually the game's original art direction:

I can appreciate liking a serious take, but I think you two are also forgetting that Link's Awakening was the single most humorous Zelda title until Wind Waker came around. I mean on top of all the Mario & Kirby enemies, you also had Talon's various antics (turned into racoon, chased by bees, etc) Marin getting held over Link's head like any other item, Link getting smooched by the town plumper, and Mr. Wright from Sim City getting catfished by a goat lady.

The setting was a literal dream world, and just like dreams, it got fucking trippy at times.

I think the art style looks better in black and white, contrast is really well-utilized throughout the game, and it strikes a certain mood and tone for the game I think gets lost with the addition of color.

The gameplay additions to DX like the photographer and color dungeon are meh, and the tunics from the color dungeon break the game and make it too easy.

When you touch a boulder before you get the power bracelet, there's a text box that pops up and tells you it's too heavy to lift. In the original, pressing B will immediately cancel the text box; in DX, you have to read the entire thing every time and can only advance it with A because pressing B no longer cancels text. Same goes for the text boxes that pop up when you get a Piece of Power or a Guardian Acorn.

Spoilered out of respect for anons ITT who said they haven't played the game:
The Nightmare is just trying to manipulate Link with guilt so he'll stay asleep and drown. There are only two possibilities:
1. None of these people exist, they are only a figment of Link and/or the Windfish's imagination(s), meaning that waking the Windfish is no more evil than waking up from a dream in real life.
2. The other people on Koholint are like Link: Animals and people from the real world who got trapped in the Windfish's dream, meaning that waking the Windfish frees them all along with Link.

The only one who's really at risk of dying from the Windfish waking is the Nightmare that's invading the Windfish's dream and forcing him to stay asleep. If you think Link is actually the bad guy then you don't understand what's happening in the game.

You know, I liked to tell myself that I come to /vr/ because there's less shitposting, and many of the anons here seem to have their shit together, and are older and more mature than /v/.

Then threads like this come about and I realize that I was wrong. Grown adults on this board are having a collective sustained mental breakdown over the artistic liberties a studio has taken for a remake of their game. They're drawing angry memes like it was 2012, and that this is the worst thing to happen to their favorite game ever. They're going to have their two minutes hate on the game whenever threads like this pop up from now until release. Then, when the game drops, these same manchildren will crawl out of their caves and give Nintendo their money because after all that, maybe they're rationalized it so that they wanted to see how bad it really was.

But then they realize it wasn't that bad after all. It just wasn't as good as the original. But they knew that all along.

If it took you until this thread to realize that you're blinder than ray charles. /vr/ has had a massive dip in quality for the past 3 years now.

To stay on topic, I have my doubts about this remake, but I'm curious to see how they'll handle certain things, like if they'll keep powder/bombs/arrows are ammo based or use the recharging energy system in ALBW, whether or not the bracelet, boots, and shield will become dedicated buttons, if we get any extra content or at the very least the extra stuff that came in the DX version.

The art is very charming and original, but it doesn't suit the game atmosphere. It would have been better in another kind of game. Windwaker cellshading was fine because it was a new game in the series and it was designed around that particular artstyle.

I don't really understand modern Nintendo. Since the WiiU era, it seems like the have lost a lot of talent and creativity. They are doing these souless remakes (like also the Mario & Luigi series or Metroid 2), a bunch of "Best of" games like the new Wario or Mario Party which repeat minigames form past games, or a lot of platfformers with strange artstyles: now is cellshading, now is a world of paper cuts, now is claymation, now a yarn game again, etc.

Honestly I think that games like Zelda 2 and Minish Cap would deserve a remake before LttP. The former because having more content and even more fleshed out combat would make the original even better while the latter was way too rail-roaded and that stupid bird thing who NEVER got his mouth shut (people who complain about navi, Fi or Midna have no idea how annoying it is, I swear), not to mention that medallion sidequest that became very annoying to complete. MC is my least favorite Zelda game but maybe Nintendo can let some studio handle it and take out its original flaws and improves on what it did well like the art style and some of the dungeons and item designs.

I'd never in good conscience reccomend ocarina of time 3d over the original n64 game.
3d has its merits like 60 fps, more item slots and not needing to pause to use the iron boots, and having a port of Master Quest.
But when you play Oot 3d, you're not playing the revolutionary n64 game that completely changed how 3d action adventure games were designed. All those muddy, stretched n64 textures, character models, lighting and the subsequent atmosphere they created were just as much of the experience as the gameplay.
You can't remove those aspects in the 3d port and pretend everything feels the same.

Especially weird small changes like Jabu-Jabu no longer having breathing noises. It's such a trivial change, so why change it? That noise was a big part of the atmosphere of Zora's Fountain imo.

Newsflash idiot, a game having good graphics doesn't just mean "duurrrr more polygons".
Majora's Mask had perfectly fine graphics. You can tell what everything was, it was readable, identifiable, etc. By all accounts the game already had good graphics.

And literally the only quality of life improvement mm3d had was the song of double time's new mechanics. Every other similar change lead to a shot ton of text being thrown in your face every ten seconds. Or just weird arbitrary changes like the happy mask salesman breaking character to hand you the bomber's notebook.

And let's not go into the other changes that objectively worsens the gameplay of majora's mask like zora swimming.

Interesting, and somewhat odd. Well, I don't know if this is true or not, but I did some googling and there's some Smashboards posts discussing how apparently in the instruction manual there are screenshots with the name コマール, so I guess he kind of has a name, in the same way Chara is the "official" name for the Fallen Child because it's also used in screenshots. The discussion goes on to speculate that this name is rendered as "Comal" and that they named him after some sort of frying pan? (Alternatively, you could go with Komaaru, which almost sounds like a normal Japanese name.) A pretty strange name, but I suppose it's not any stranger than Link. Thing is I'm also seeing that the game has an absolutely ridiculous limit of four characters so you can't even use the name Comal in English. Of course there's no problem in Japanese so it doesn't make the name less valid but man, how do you come up with a good name with only four letters? You can't even fit "Prince" or "Sable" in that few letters.

You'll never recapture what the original had because one was made by video game nerds who were obsessed with computers throughout the 80s early 90s, and the remake is something straight out of a corporate boardroom meant to cash in on what those nerds created a second time, with a modernized coat of paint on it to make it appeal to the lowest common denominator (maximizing sales,) while, at the same time, cutting down development costs by using cheap technology instead of expensive artists so as to maximize profits on, what has always been, a cash in.

Don't choose to remake a game in your stockholder meaning and you won't hear the "buzzword" soulless any more, problem solved. There has never been a more perfect description of this shit than soulless, and the fact that it triggers the fuck out of retards like you (who these cash ins are meant to appeal to) pretty much confirms that.

Link's Awakening is the only Zelda game I actually finished. I came close with Wind Waker but when the final dungeon was a rehash of previous dungeons I got bored and moved on to something else.

I tried some of most of the others but something about the series just doesn't do it for me. I love the way LttP looks and used to want it in the snes days but when I finally played it never got into it. Great looking games but something about them is so boring to me.

How do people "get bored and quit" at the very last dungeon. It's one fucking dungeon. At worst it's a couple hours of your time. After spending hours on this game how can you not just push yourself through that last bit.

You missed the best final boss fight in the series too. And you were so close.

Honestly because I didn't care about the story or end boss or seeing how it all ended. I had been enjoying the different dungeons. But when the final one was a mishmash of previous ones after a couple I realised all that was really left was to do them then fight some boss I had other games I'd rather put that time into. Even now I have no regrets at all.

It's similar in a way to Fantasy Zone. I loved that game so much, each level I got to was better than the last and after the second-to-last level I was super hyped for what was to come. Then that final level was just a bossrush of previous fights followed by maybe the most boring boss of the whole game. I still love it and did finish, but wow what a let down.

Right at the end the placement of the crystal switches requires you to backtrack a floor to push down a block, which is really annoying. If that's the part that stumped you and you absolutely hate it, there's two options for you.
A) If you can put up with slightly worse sound and a lower resolution, you can go play the GBA port which has altered that last floor's rising block placement so you never have to backtrack again.
B) Do as I do and complete the 6th dungeon (misery mire) before the ice palace. The item you get in there, the cane of somaria, will let you skip pushing down that block in the ice palace altogether.

A protip for getting through the dungeons is to seek out all the glass bottles, and then instead of relying on fairies (who will revive you if you die, but will only restore so many hearts), just carry blue medicine, it restores hearts and MP fully.
You can also sprinkle magic powder on that funky magic smelter underneath the blacksmith's house in the light world, in which case you get permanently "cursed" with spells costing half as much to cast, effectively doubling your pool.

The Ice Palace is one of three dungeons which is more magic focused, but if you bring the Fire Rod and some bottles of medicine, it'll make it much more bearable, and it'll make you more prepared for Misery Mire and Turtle Rock, as you can find an upgraded armor here.

More than anything though, the thing that left me completely rectal ragnarok'd was they nerfed the fucking screw attack, not only are there a lot of enemies that can take several bumps with it to kill, even more enemies are capable of shooting/slapping you out of it, that one thing that's supposed to leave you essentially invulnerable to all non-boss enemies so you can backtrack and go looking for items easier was crippled in this game.

>Link to the Past is not all that great of a game
Lolwhat. It's got great graphics, great music, a world thats fun to explore, great dungeons, fun bosses, satisfying progression, a satisfying ending, and introduced some of the most iconic themes of Zelda as we know it today including the presentation and gratification of hoisting the master sword. Something which no Zelda game has matched with the sword since. BotW's drawing of the sword was the closest they've gotten since, but not even that matched the moment in ALttP.

The game is amazing, you shut your dirty mouth.

I rate it highly because of all the things i listed. I've played them all since the beginning (not including CD-i) and ALttP is still my favorite one. I enjoyed Zelda 1 back in the day too, so you can't tell me im shilling it because it was the first one i liked.

Protip: That guy is trolling you.
His next move will be to reply to my post saying that me calling him out for his trolling will be ">different opinions are trolling! >The state of nostalgiafags! >seething" Because deep down he really doesn't give a fuck about this discussion, he's just here for the (you)s

I just think you're doing some overstating of just how good those things you listed are. The graphics are good, but they're not great and the game actually has a lot of ugly sprites and questionable design choices (like half the bosses being eyeballs).

The dungeons are good, but I never found the world all that fun to explore, there's too much emptiness and things are too spread out, so trekking across the map gets old quickly. It's not even challenging, just time consuming.

I know something like presentation is highly subjective, but the Master Sword sequence in OoT is at least as satisfying as the one in LttP, if not moreso.

It just seems like your statements are a bit hyperbolic, in that "This game is literally perfect and unsurpassable" way that comes from nostalgia. And it doesn't have to be the first Zelda game you played or liked for you to be nostalgic about it, by the way.

I'm not the guy you're arguing with, LttP is absolutely gorgeous what the fuck is wrong with you. Also LttP being empty? It's probably the one Zelda game packed with the most amount of secrets and things to do on almost every screen.

I've been proven wrong before in threads like these, and every time it happens, my faith is restored just a little more.

I can't overstate something when i feel that way about a game every time i play it.

The master sword sequence in OoT is dumb. He steps up to it slowly, but then just rips it out effortlessly before being surrounded by a blue light. In ALttP its a slow sequence of the pendants appearing and flashing while the spark of the sword being forced out of the pedestal grows brighter and brighter until Link finally forces it free on the highest note of the music. it strike a much more 'you did it' feeling.

I never said the game was perfect, for fucks sake. I hate it when people pull that statement out of their ass when arguing about what makes a game good or not.

brb pirating.

Wish they went further and made a full 3D version of these originals, they'd be entirely new things themselves.
But.... at the same time I'd prefer BOTW 2.0

Depends, Links Awakening and the old GBA/GBA colour games are just too old.
They're getting donkey kong tier old in appearance.

Not that they aren't bad in their old forms, they could just be put into a new idea.
I like how Nintendo gives zero fucks about fucking with these classic games. Sacred cows in game franchises kill franchises.

Yeah blame your laws, not the game makers.
They have to comply with standards.. causes this crap.

They change the appearance but it'll most likely be a 1:1 remake of how the game is played. That's the important thing to me, I'd kill to see some more dungeons, a hard mode and some other interesting shit.

Gonna have to agree with Pebbles420 here. The only 2D Zelda game I played that made me go "Wow, I really enjoyed that almost as much as a 3D Zelda" was Oracle of Seasons. (As for why Seasons and not Ages, I never played Ages. I'll have to try it sometime.)

There's no law that made Game Freak corral the player into a handhold-centric gameplay style, and no law that made them kiddify the dialogue in the West. Only law I can think of is Eurofags forcing all the gambling to be taken out.

This is too true. Good thing I ordered a new gameboy. They're probably gonna fuck other things up that should be left alone (on top of the graphics)
