I've been thinking about this for a long time. I could at least make the port draw to the screen. Drawable textures are something Graf has [No]'d already despite how many of us want them. GZDoom already does have camera textures, and they pretty much work in a similar way to what we want, except rather than drawing a camera, we'd just draw images and text and whatnot. It doesn't look like it'd take much work to get this done for someone who knows that part of the engine (which I don't).

I guess it's just not a priority™.

So I'm new to GMOTA.

I've just been playing it and doing my own thing, but I don't know if I'm playing it "right". Are there any videos you'd recommend of someone playing through a tough WAD with it so I get an idea of what the mod is capable of? I think my playstyle with it might be very boring compared to what you can get away with.

On a power ranking, top being most OP and bottom being least OP, how would you rank these gameplay mods, according to how powerful they make the player character?

If they offer options to make enemies more powerful as well, ignore those, we're only talking about the player character here. If a mod offers various characters/loadouts, you may rank them separately. Assuming default settings on all mods, though you may comment on how they play after fiddling with settings as well if you want.

List:
>Combined Arms
>DAKKA
>Faspons
>Final Doomer
>GMOTA
>Heretical Doom
>High Noon Drifter
>MSFixd
>Necrodoom
>Project Brutality
>Russian Overkill
>Trailblazer
>Weapons of Saturn

I'm interested in getting a wide range of opinions from /doom/ on this.

Russian Overkill
Trailblazer
High Noon Drifter - although mostly level headed, the Staff and everything about Basilissa break any ordinary limits and put you into death incarnate category
Final Doomer - Doomguy is pretty bonkers, plus some specific guns of other "characters" tend to show some ludicrous performance, but on average it's fairly balanced.
Combined Arms - there is a lot of nearly infinite decently high firepower, especially the rocket launcher that is sustainable with barely a pair of rocket crates, but nothing really game breaking
GMOTA - honestly I've never felt too powerful, although I feel that it just isn't a mod for me
MSF - the are some definitely powerful weapons at you disposal, but you yourself is nothing more than a wet tissue paper, this holds your powerlevel way back
Most of the remaining list I havent touch in a while, so I did not list them.

Any Linux guys using Quakespasm here?

I'm having a bit of a problem that I'm almost certain has to do with case-sensitive filenames. I'm trying to play Beyond Belief with Qspasm, but I'm getting the "Couldn't spawn server maps/bbstart.bsp" type of messages. I figured maybe it was because the map inside the PAK was called BBSTART, so I tried that as well, and I got the same error. Tried Bbstart, BBstart, nothing.

Could you guys help me out? Absolutely none of the other many maps I've tried has given me problems like this.

Nah. When trying to figure out what I was doing wrong I found this, which luckily lets you extract and look at the guts of pak files, so you can see if the author was clueless about filename conventions and fix it yourself

https://github.com/yquake2/pakextract

That's why I was going nuts over "this extracted file shows the map names are lowercase, so what gives? I'm doing it right", and I dunno why I didn't think to rename the actual pak file to lowercase til now.

Won't help you much if you're playing an episode and the next level trigger tries to load Map2 instead of map2. Means you'll be shotgun starting a lot or losing any hub based progress (like the runes system).

>There's nothing wrong with the concept of a horror-focused Doom game
I will say that.

I think Doom 3 was overall ok as a shooter (improves with a flashlight mod), and while I think a horror flavored Doom could work just fine, Doom 3 doesn't really have a particularly strong or refined grasp on horror, which is why that aspect falls so flat. The game really shouldn't have bothered much at all with trying to be scary, and instead have focused more on making the run-n-gun action better.

I'd have added them to the wiki myself, but guess what you can't fucking register a wiki account for some stupid reason

NOFRICTION disables the effects of friction on the actor it's on, including the effects of ice/sludge floors on your speed and the whole "capped speed in water" bullshit. unfortunately, it doesn't do anything about the buoyancy code; there's another pull request on the gzdoom github that'll deal with that (exposes the code that applies gravity/water sinking to zscript, in the form of the function FallAndSink(double gravity, double oldfloorz)).

NOFRICTIONBOUNCE merely disables the behavior where if you collide with a wall fast enough with a higher friction value (higher = slipperier), you bounce off of it rather than just stopping.

if you are in deep water of any depth and bump into a wall that has a ledge above it, at any height, you do an upwards hop as long as you are moving against the wall
thing is it doesn't do any other checks

The menu theme is baller as fuck, but there's nothing else in the game which sounds like that, which is a shame.

Russians, in my experience, often come from a standpoint that more real = more better. Almost to a point of morality. 3D is more real than 2.5D so it must be better. They make realistic texture mods for things that have no place being that way. Even their writing is often pessimistic or dark because it's unrealistic for a dangerous or adventurous situation to end well.
That's just what I gleam from them though. Any Russians lemme know what's up.

I think there is like a universally accepted headcanon (or rather several of them) for why some lizards in various fiction have boobs or at least chest "sacks"
It can be as simple as Sexual Dimorphism. Like, even if they don't have functional uses for tits, they still look curvy and attractive to males.
Or maybe, if it's an amphibian, those can be air sacks, and females just choose they have their sacks poofed up when on land simply as a preference, or even to give to give the more humanoid species an easier way to differentiate between genders of the scalies.

Well, I mean, Russians still vividly remember the post-soviet times.
While American 90s were the time Radical things and videogames and skateboards,
for Russian it was "the Wild 90s" with gangsters, gopniks, lots of cities being essentially ghetto, russian mafias and "roofs", and also problems with money and food. The only Vidiya they had were Dendy (a chinese NES) and DOS/PC.

Tell me about the moment when you "met" Doom. It was 97, and I was 9 years old. I got one those cds which had shitload of shareware games on them. One of them was Doom 95 with Doom's first episode. Holy shit, I fell in love the game. I propably completed the first episode for dozens of times. I also found the full version on local store, but my parents wouldn't buy it for me, because they thought that it wouldn't be suitable for kids. Year later I found Doom 2 on same store, and dad bought it for me. For some reason I wasn't as excited as I thought I would be. I still completed the game, and thought that it was a good game, but just a good game. Propably another year later I stumbled upon the whole full version of Ultimate Doom on some abandonware website. And fuck, my life felt complete. I absolutely enjoyed all the 3 new episodes, that I got to play for first time. I remembered why I enjoyed the shareware episode in first place. Wasn't long from there till I found Boom, and all the fan-made pwads, and from there on I learned to saw the greatness in Doom 2. Now that I think of it, no other game has been that much a part of my life.

It was in 2005 when I got my first internet connection. My PC was very weak (Win98, 4 GB HDD, 64 MB RAM), so I could only play old games like Blood, Duke Nukem 3D. I didn't like Doom when I first saw it, because resolution was too low (I played DOS version), also I hated sounds and three frames animations, I think that's because my first game was Blood which was newer and I played it I guess in 2000. I only started enjoing Doom when I got ZDoom and a few mods for it. So I completed Doom for a first time with Doom 3 sounds/weapons mod. Later I downloaded ZDaemon and played deathmatch/duels on maps like brit10, brit11, dwango5 map01, many others.

see, this doesn't work because there's no sound effects that stand out to break from the monotone buzz, and when the bells do come in they just sound really out of place and ruin the atmosphere. it's literally to the same effect as recording sounds from a blender and a printer, mixing both until they vaguely resemble a coherent beat and claim it's EDM, or singing from my low register and claiming I'm a soprano. everything can be oversimplified if you try hard enough.

I don't know what this is meant to serve as proof of, it just sounds really garish and goofy by any standard. but uh, I guess that was the goal?

Anon, you're being purposefully dense aren't you. DOOM 1/2 have a fuckton of original tracks that only get reused two or three maps, if that. Quake has like 11 that it has to use to cover 4 episodes + most fan-made maps. You really don't think this is a problem? You'll listen to the 11 tracks merrily forever? At that point it's not the mappers' choice to put that song there, it's basically filling a checklist. It contributes next to nothing to their artistic vision for that map.

The Quake soundtrack is okay for your first playthrough of the game, but on a repeat playthrough or playing fan-made maps, it gets tedious.

I actually "met" with Doom several times.
1st in '95 when it came preinstalled along Heretic on a fresh PC my dad bought. This was my first IBM PC (previously only had Spectrum). I loved both games, but Heretic had more impact on me.
But then Quake and Duke came out, then Unreal, and for a while Unreal '98 was my most favourite game ever.
I don't remember how I discovered Doom Legacy, but I did it around 2001 and played through original wads and final doom with my sister in split-screen. Then it was abandoned once more. At the time I didn't realize that Doom had a modding/mapping community at all.
Around 2008 or so I read about jHeretic (Doomsday) on some site and that reignited the heretic spark in me- I got all the high-res pack and played through Heretic, Hexen and Doom extensively. I hated 3D models and simply cut them out of the DHTP archives, leaving all the other "bling" intact.
I am ashamed to say, but it was Brutal Doom that opened Doom modding for me - an article on some site about v18 of the mod introduced me back to Doom and GZDoom in particular. Then I found ZDoom forums, and realised that there were fuckton of mods and maps that I missed out. Since that moment there was no way back.

per the readme, it's really meant as a modding resource, but for vanilla doom it's playable as-is

typically all you need to do to adapt a mod to use quakemovement is include the quakeaccel.txt zscript, have the player classes in the mod inherit from QuakeAccelPlayer, and tweak the values as needed (or use the example values in testclasses.txt). for the few mods that actually mess with PlayerPawn.HandleMovement, there's no general instructions I can give to make them work, but the only mod I know of that does that is doom tournament, and what sort of madman would mix UT guns with quake physics

>>5367914
there's a flag, VQ1BunnyHop, that applies friction for a tic even if you jump immediately. by default, it doesn't do that.
if you're thinking about the powerbunny technique (with the flag on)... it should work? if it works the way I think it does - the way the video describes it, you're moving around 58 degrees to the right, and you're moving slightly less than 320u/s in that direction when around 600u/s speed, so you accelerate in that direction - it will.

actually, on the topic of powerbunny: don't expect it to work as well in doom as it does in quake. I matched the friction half-time values (how long it takes for friction to halve your velocity) exactly, but due to the fact that you'll spend 1/35 of a second on the ground in doom (as opposed to 1/77 of a second in quake), you're going to necessarily have more friction apply, which cuts your momentum down harder. you'll still keep more momentum than just plain bunnyhopping, but I expect the speed cap relative to your forward speed to be noticeably lower.

of course, when VQ1Bunnyhop is off (as it is by default), it won't matter. but something to keep in mind.

Is Half Life 1 worth a playthough nowadays if I've never played it before?

The heavy-handed story section bits kind of turn me off (specially knowing that it's not gonna go anywhere since HL3 is a meme that is never happening), but I might be willing to stomach it if the actual gunplay and exploring is solid (I have heard milquetoast things about those by other people)

No, since most security issues with the JVM occur in relation to web applets. Even if you do host a multiplayer game, you're not really in any danger.

Besides, there's no guarantee that if BloodGDX were programmed in C or C++ that it would be more secure. In fact it's way easier for an inexperienced/bad programmer to introduce security vulnerabilities like buffer overflows in C than it is in Java.

hl1's pretty much where the divide between games as gameplay and games as an "experience" started
the guns are standard realistic/sci-fi affair with momentary breaks into out-there stuff, such as the crossbow (which still is a bog-standard sniper rifle) and the shotgun (which has a DOUBLE SHOT alt-fire omg!!!)
if you like storygames with atmosphere and environmental storytelling and realistic architecture, you'll like it, if you prefer your games to be arcade-y and to sacrifice realism for better gameplay, you'll hate it

i think it's aged really shittily, but it's still an important landmark for fps history

I'm in the same boat as you, never played hl1 and I've always debated getting around to it. HL2 and its episodes were fun, the gameplay was enjoyable and I'd say the overall presentation was ahead of everything else at the time, so I'd only guess the same for the first one. Probably seen the whole game multiple times over through vids, just havent gotten around to it, and honestly I'm probably more interested in going back to like deus ex before HL1, but who knows, give it a shot!

I have this weird love/hate relationship with Turok 2.
On one hand, the gunplay is amazing, it's satisfying, the weapons are some of the best. A good enemy variety and a great soundtrack.
On the other hand the level design. The first one is really good but they go too overboard with the exploration, it feels like a maze, if you miss one thing, you have to go back from the beginning, it's tedious as hell. The worst one is definitely the Lair of the Blind Ones.

i hated it the first time through, but it's grown on me since. the gunplay is decent, not as good as hl2 what with all the bullet sponge enemies, but it works for the somewhat slower pace. weapon variety is not stellar but has some neat stuff like the tau cannon, mines, and snarks, but nothing feels useless. the story isn't as heavy as it's made out to be, the only unskippable story related parts are the very beginning and end, the rest is just npc dialogue you can fully ignore. it's not a mindblowing cum-in-your-pants good story, but it's enjoyable and kept my attention. the lack of a sequel doesn't matter much as in my opinion hl1's story works just fine as a standalone.
not a whole lot in the way of exploring as it's pretty linear, but there's a good amount of item stashes tucked away and the levels are well made and not too simplistic. it's got less puzzles than hl2, it's usually just "move some boxes to jump up here" or "go find the button to turn on this generator so you can advance in the other direction".
difficulty wise it's pretty solid if you play on hard, the hitscan enemies are pretty annoying but not impossible if you keep in mind this isn't as much of a run and gun game as doom or quake. imo the last couple chapters are way too easy but a lot of people complain about the platforming and the sub boss so idk.
overall i'd say it's a pretty good game, but if you go in expecting doom/quake style gameplay and trying to play it as such you're gonna be disappointed

Half life 1 is a far better game than 2 in many ways.

In some ways, such as the really interesting AI and approach to enemies, it's still an odd duck. MarphitusBlacktimus' videos reallymade me appreciate the design of the game.

Many of the enemies are designed more like animals than necessarily enemy NPC's, some will even sleep when you're not there, or have abilities like smell which you'd never notice.
