Do you remember the pre-NES days?
What were you playing?

>> No.5365740

I'm not sure what this thread is supposed to be asking. Do you want a discussion of 2nd gen games? Because there honestly isn't a lot to say given that those games were mostly about beating your high score and had no ending or goal to them.

>> No.5365741

>I'm not sure what this thread is supposed to be asking
I thought it was simple enough.
I asked if you guys remember the pre-NES days, and what were you playing.
I'm aware story-based games weren't common back then and were more arcade/score-centric. We can still talk about different games, their mechanics and stuff. You know, the ludo aspect.

>> No.5365762

My first game was SMB so I don't remember, but I was always fascinated about my parents telling me how they went to arcades and played Galaga together a lot. I ended up developing an interest in classic arcades, and I'm fortunate that there one in my area that has Tempest, Robotron and Asteroids Deluxe.

I had a 2600 with a ton of games and a 5200 with about five games. Still have all the 5200 games, but only a handful of my 2600 ones. Still have both consoles which work.

Best home games were Pitfall II, Atlantis, Cosmic Ark, H.E.R.O, and Spider Fighter.

Arcade games were better though. Love Galaga, Berzerk, Dragon's Lair, Ms. Pac-Man, Joust, Defender, and many others.

are there any notable elements which were lost going forward from the earlier days? Always seemed a bit like games going forward to the mid- to late 80s were basically direct upgrades from games of the late 70s/early 80s.

The one thing I can think of is that graphics in systems like 2600 were so primitive that it sometimes gave the resulting games a more fantastic quality. I think that this is more noticeable with later systems though.

the only games I remember playing on the 2600 are pitfall, maze craze, kaboom, and river raid. I remember playing a shitload on Colleco, but I don't recall a 1/4 of their names. I remember Smurfs, Mr.Do, Pepper II, Spyhunter (with the driving wheel for extra immersion) Heist, Frog Bog, Squishem Sam (squishem!), ummm Cabage Patch kids (which I couldn't comprehend) BC Quest for Tires and the sequell Grog's revenge. Some game where you are a hotdog putting out fires. My two favorite games I don't recall their names, but one was like defender but with like 3 vertical screens worth of scrolling. you could leave the atmospher and go into space or dip down under the ocean. the other game was similar only from a first person perspective, you basically controlled a reticle.
