I havent played a lot of stuff that forced me to plan this many moves in advance. You have to exploit every tool you have at hand (speaking of, letting the player respec at any savepoint is such a great decision) and you'll struggle to make any progress against late game bosses if you don't learn how to switch party members at the right moment. When's the last time you played a JRPG with menu driven combat so flexible you could actually feel like you were picking up skills over time? Every character has their utility depending on the kind of battle you fight and I haven't had a single one take the back seat for what felt like a significant amount of time. But I guess all of that stuff would probably fly over your head anyway because all you can see in it is "generic good guy hero fights evil dark bad guy story" or w/e

How can a board with so many JRPG threads be so game iliterate when it comes to talking about JRPGs

>> No.5358190

>>5358010
It definitely does get shallow at points (think the chosen one trope, the villain having no real motives other than being evil) but beyond that is a fantastic game. The artstyle is great, the dynamic between the characters is among the best I've seen, and just the overall atmosphere really makes for a fun and immersive game. Maybe it's just rose-tinted glasses since 'classic' jrpgs are becoming less and less common in favor of edgier action based stuff but it feels damn nice to have a modern title stick to the tenets of the genre.

All the talented developers that left square went on to continue creating innovative and fun JRPGs for their own studios/other studios long after Square died. You only have to go and play them.
>>5358003
Play more JRPG's. There's been a bit of rennaisance since about 2017. Also Square didn't make Dragon Quest XI.
>>5358020
There is some good stuff about it. The level designs in the towns is really jaw dropping for eg. But yeah it's painfully traditional..... which is what people seem to love about it.

Radiant Historia came out in 2010 and it really gave me the feeling of mid 90s jRPGs. I liked it quite a lot.
Also, it did time travel/parallel worlds travel better than CT/CC did, IMO. But then, I'm /that/ asshole who never really liked CT all that much to begin with.
