So EzQuake is the recommended sourceport for multiplayer, and Quakespasm is the recommended port for singleplayer. But which one should be used for co-op?

Why is it even that way to begin with? I'm assuming EzQuake has Quakeworld's updated netcode, so it gets the nomination for multiplayer, but why does Quakespasm remain as the choice for singleplayer?

co-op is multiplayer, and quakespasm is as far as i know the most actively developed singleplayer-oriented port, has pretty vanilla-faithful default settings, and increased limits so you can run autistic fuckhuge maps if you so please. the other active sp port is darkplaces but that heavily fucks with the original look and feel (new hd textures and effects and shit) which i personally find repulsive but you might not

Darkplaces just gives me conflicting feelings. I like to see evolutionary design, but slathering it on top of default Quake just feels off. It can play vanilla Quake and its mods, sure, but it doesn't really excel until you play something specifically designed for it.

I'll check out FTEQW. I'm mainly looking to play co-op on Arcane Dimensions (Doesn't really work perfectly in co-op, but I figured it'd be nice since he's never done AD), and I think I might be at the point where if it works fine but suffers from poor netcode (Which might not even matter since we're shooting at NPCs anyway), I'd be ok with it.

You could almost count Half-Life as a Quake mod, and you might be better off looking through its ilk for a total conversion.

As for Quake itself, there's a few things like Quake Rally (Turns Quake into a racing game), Quake Chess I think (Personally never played it, might be interesting to see how it was done though), and of course, Quake Team Fortress, which can be played with a bot pack if you can't find anyone else to populate your servers. I haven't really found a TC that replicates Quake's gameplay and replaces the weapon/enemy set, though there's quite a few mods that add a few new weapons or enemy types.

So I've played through your map on Ultra-Violence and while its ok-ish right now, there are ways to fix and improve it.

The good:

* Your radio switches are cute!
* You differentiate locations enough to not get confused by the maps layout.
* Having a hidden key in plain sight to a secret is good design.

Major gameplay issues:

* The first radio switch is a pain in the ass to activate. Since it only activates once, I'd recommend extending it to the left panel of the switch.
* Your enemy teleport traps tend to leave a bee's dick worth of reaction time to them. I'd recommend spacing them out a bit from their original destinations. ESPECIALLY THE NUKAGE ROOM.
* Similarly, you teleport too many enemies to the same teleport location. For example, in the nukage room stairs, you have 6 imps teleport to the same spot (which was kind of hilarious). You could fix this by having nearby pillars or cages where single imps harass the player from.
* The pillars of falling nukage got in the way a few times when fighting enemies in the nukage room. Make these one-sided textures so the player doesn't have to worry about dodging the level geometry.
* While having teleports to backtrack is nice, you didn't include a quick return to the teleport room! This is immensely frustrating, and should be remedied with nearby teleports
* After teleporting to the final area (with the castle walls), you can run straight past the barons to the exit. I'd suggest adding more enemies to block the player's path.
* Due to difficult to hit Chaingunners, they might not be enough health packs near them.

* Try and avoid using door textures as decoration - you'll keep the player thinking they're either part of an ambush or a secret there.
* Their is a hall of mirrors glitch near the chainsaw. I played it with PrBoom+ and it's default compatibility level (17 I think). Although checking the map in GZDoom Builder doesn't reveal what is causing it. Weird.
* You need to Lower Unpeg one doortrack texture.
* You've placed Chaingunners in some spots where they can easily chew your health, but it's either difficult or risky to kill them.

Something like No Rest for the Living or Sigil. No changes in classic art style, coding, relatively adventurous, accessible for many users etc etc... Not too many authors as well.

I've only played Perdition's Gate, but I want to lean against a no on it.

It's not bad, there's some pretty good levels and ideas in there, but it's so painfully thinly spread. The Hell 2 Pay development team was brought in to fill in the mapslots on Perdition's Gate, and from what I've heard of H2P, this really shows, the last third of the game is mostly a series of very brief, small, and sparsely populated levels, which are very samey, you see some of this earlier, but it gets it the worst by the last parts.

The readme file, titlescreen, and even some of the story texts and intermissions (involving a curious method of putting little story texts on the level name graphics), they give you an image in your head, which I found it mostly failed to deliver on, and any time it actually does try, it does so very briefly, the interesting ideas it has are barely explored at all.
Combine this with the readme promising that the maps are supposed to be really hard and challenging, which they just aren't (aside from Map 30, which ends as abruptly like most the other levels).

I felt VERY blueballed by Perdition's Gate, but I can't outright hate it, because there's enough glimpses of something good and interesting that I can't call it trash, I just would not recommend it unless you find the premise really interesting.
Someone should really salvage the better textures and music tracks and do a themed episode around them. Perdition's Gate The Way Wraith Didn't?

Personally i think it's a great game and to some degree even innovative, but way too unforgiving especially if you don't have the time to fiddle with it. Heretic mostly plays like Doom, only it's medieval fantasy, and Doom is fun, so even if it isn't highly inventive, it's decent enough as a game.

Hexen goes in a different direction, with a heavy focus on puzzle solving, which many would argue it doesn't do very well, along with having you choose a class at the beginning of the game, the Warrior, Mage, and Cleric.
Hexen's combat is not very riveting, not helped by the fact that each class only have four weapons each available, and that some of these are hopelessly unsatisfying to fight with. Some of this is alleviated by giving the player plenty of "Flechettes" (inventory items which have a different offensive effect depending on your class), but I don't think it does enough.

Hexen is divided into hubs, in that you have a series of levels connected to a central level, as a hub, and you travel around the maps in the hub to solve puzzles and get keys, so you can eventually advance to the next hub. Hexen's weakest and most drawn out and boring hub is the first one, which does a good job at turning many players off the game, when it actually gets better.

Heretic is a pure action game. Run and gun, shoot and evade. It is exclusively centered around combat, with all the enemy ranged hitscanners having been thrown away, and which only really shines on the last difficulty, that is effectively -fast. The highlights of the game are the bosses, with D'Sparil, especially when played on said last difficulty, being probably the best goddamn boss in all of 90s FPS games.

HeXen, on the other hand, is essentially an adventure game about exploration of a labyrinth with traps. In Heretic you had 7 weapons (technically 8, but, you know), each could be used in alternate firing mode by invoking Tome of Power artifact, thus making effectively 14 different weapons. In HeXen you have three characters you can possibly play as, and each only has 4 weapons, with no Tome of Power. Moreover, the game has only two types of ammo pickups. Moreover, if you choose Mage in particular, 95% of the game could be, combat-wise, casually facerolled on the last difficulty once you understand how ridiculously broken his starting wand is. What's left in the game after that is, well, you need to still evade enemies, but first and foremost, what remains is its puzzle aspect, built purely around navigating (quite strikingly beautiful at times!) location and sticking your nose into whatever seems or you have a suspicion to be out of place. What would be a secret in any other 90s FPS game, is simply part of the course in HeXen. In fact, that game does barely have any secrets. outside of secret levels, I can only recall like 4 normal secrets for the entirety of the game. Everything else that might seem a secret to you, is actually by and large required for the completion of the game. Due to that, and due to radically reduced combat options, HeXen, by and large, is not particularly well-liked by the players who play 90s shooters for frenetic combat or some such. In fact, however, it is much more of a dungeon-crawler, than it is a shooter.

A couple of years ago I put together a 3d demo like this but didn't go too far with it. I recently got the Doom black book, and for whatever reason it inspired me to open up the source again and see how far I could push it. I've just kept adding things and iteratively improving it and here we are.

I still have some optimizations planned, and I'm probably gonna see how slow it is with texturing as well. But first it needs sub-pixel correct rasterization though (that's what's causing the flickering pixels at the borders between walls and ceilings, hard to see in the video though).

I've been thinking for years about the best 3d engine you could do on a genesis, so why not? I've got all the resources I need to try it myself.

There is a secret in E4M4 (made by Petersen), which is set up in the specific way, that makes it clear, that the grenade jump is the intended way of getting it (you only get rocket launcher in E4M6, so it's grenade jump). Booster's ammo system has a "smart" randomizer that constantly checks the player's equipment/ammo status in order to determine what should spawn. For example, shell ammo has a chance to spawn either Jet Divider or Nitro Wheel ammo. If you're full up on Nitro Wheel ammo, there's a lower chance Nitro Wheel ammo will spawn. If you don't even have the Nitro Wheel, there's a muuuuuch lower chance.
Because of this, the ammo constantly monitor's the player's status. So on extremely large maps, there's a LOT of shit checking on the player every couple of tics, which causes a huge performance drop. Swapping to Universal or Randomized can take care of this quickly, but I'd like to figure out a way to better streamline the code so that this doesn't happen as much.
Booster's mapsets of choice are already pretty limited, limiting them even further would just kind of be crippling.

That's actually not too far from its current implementation.
Distance is actually how it currently decides on what ammo to spawn, when the player first sees it or they're within X units, it stops randomizing and spawns an ammo type.
I tried making it so longer distances take longer to check on the player buuuuut it turns out the problem with that is that teleporters can cut down on the amount of time extremely quickly, and if an ammo is in the middle of its 35-tic delay, it has to finish that before it realizes "the player's right here right now".

It has some issues with vanilla mod comparability (I'm sure there's a better way to phrase that).
If you're playing just straight Doom it's a great port though. I like chocodoom/crispy better though.
Eternity engine doesn't get enough love. It's a great port that's competitive with gzdoom Doom in many areas and cleaner overall. Just doesn't have the feature set, and along with that doesn't have the bloat.

I'm not drawing shit except for touchups. All my sprites are sourced from 3D models that I model, texture, light and render to look like low res sprite graphics. Aside from the continuous firing rate and health, his main ability doesn't feel as good as it should be.
Instead of actually dropping poison that hurts you, it comes off as harmless slime that only hurts when it explodes, after you're nowhere near it.

I find the EGADS in Rise Of The Triad very intriguing. Their sprites don't change based on your horizontal position, but your vertical position, depending on how above or below them you are. It could be neat if such a thing was implemented in Doom, it looks way better than ZDoom's X/Y billboarding.
