I wanted to get /vr/ opinion on how the remake compares to the original. Which game do you find better? Give pros and cons for each game if you must.

They ruined his transformation in the remake to be honest here.

the Remake is a shitty generic action shooter without soul or atmosphere of the original.

but they definetly did go with the time pandering to a generation full of inferior degenerates that don't know if they are male or female and just want fast entertainment.

you may actually want to consider communicating outside the internet once in awhile.

>> No.5351478

It's hard to compare experiences with a game you played decades ago as a child and a remake you're experiencing as a dead-souled adult. I'd say it was a fine remake and hit all the proper notes without falling into the trap of just remastering it. The gameplay was unique enough that you got all the nostalgia but it didn't really repeat puzzles or exact layouts to where there's no reason in just not playing the original.

This guy >>5351421 either never played the remake or played it on easy. The game is only as much an action shooter as the original one was. Playing on hard was even harder than the original since it takes far more ammo to drop zombies and Mr. X will actively Nemesis you around the whole station.

Ultimately, I still prefer the original. It comes with the memories of dozens of hours playing with my siblings, trading off between A and B modes, the kind of memories I'm just not going to have with the remake.

>> No.5351592

It's hard to divorce nostalgia from my opinion but I find the style of horror used in the original much more attractive. People will argue that 2 was the beginning of the series veering towards more action-oriented gameplay, but aesthetically it still has a sense of creeping dread and ominousness that I didn't find in the remake. A big part for me is just the soundtrack coupled with the door opening screens. Hearing the music change as you watch the loading transition to places like the library, the basement, or the areas after the cable car ride instills a real sense of mystery and anxiety about what might be stalking the next room. Couple that with the cinematic nature of the fixed camera angles and the fact that you often hear monsters before you see them and you have a very atmospheric experience that's "scary" in a slow-burn sort of way.

The remake reminds me of comments Capcom made around Dino Crisis being a "panic horror" game. The OTS camera puts you much closer to the action, you have more control over actually placing your shots, and there's a greater sense of urgency in the limited capacity for zombies (and eventually Mr. X) being able to follow you from room to room. Even the soundtrack is severely downplayed to create a harsher dynamic between silence and "shock moments" of zombies crashing down a door or a licker pouncing from the ceiling. It's a more modern approach to horror as a frenetic, terror-inspiring genre, something like when you compare the two versions of Dawn of the Dead. It all comes down to personal taste, but I just find the tone of the original much more haunting and memorable.

The remake is still mechanically impressive and I had a lot of fun with it. I just don't think it'll have the staying power that some of the other games in the series have had for me.

>> No.5353658

I played the remake on hardcore and i gotta say i was pleasantly surprised. Its not an action game like re 4-6 are. and its not first person walking simulator like re7 is. they took aspects from re3 like gunpowders and mr x behaves more like nemesis than re2 mr x. shooting and killing every single zombie/monster is not the way to go, though of course even on hardcore it can be possible, though this is true for the original re2 as well. overall id say its a really good re game, i still prefer the original but they did a fine job with this one.

yeah because when you played the original, you didn't know what was coming. how can you possibly have a strong sense of dread when you what the story is and how it will end? all horror is predicated on the element of surprise.

RE2make is the better game, sorry. The original never had me squirming in my seat, the remake does, but also the TV I'm playing it on right now has really bad input lag which makes aiming a real bitch. That might be a huge factor, but still.

I do think the original has more "soul" though, although that might just be nostalgia. The original's soundtrack was a billion times better for sure, kinda disappointed this one doesn't have a save room theme. Still, the original had no tension about anything, it was really just a simple third person shooter that had no mechanics to it along with simple puzzles and fetch quests. It was easy to kill everything without worrying about ammo. This game is mechanically much better and I think the survival horror element is much stronger.

One thing I really dig about the remake is that in terms of art style it looks like the fucking RE1make, better even. It's like a real 3D version of that which I really appreciate. It really makes me reflect how far graphics have come. When I started up the game and saw the very intro beginning and in-game graphics I was amazed, just because I thought back to RE2 on playstation and remembered the FMV sequences. At the time those were mindblowing and I thought graphics would never get that good, yet here we are with actual gameplay graphics that are a billion times better than those CGI movies. Insane.

But yeah, really great game, of course 4chan autists are gonna hate it because sexual frustration. I think this gen has generally been much better than last, certainly for the AAA market at least, and definitely for first person shooters.

It doesn't have the retarded crimson mechanic from the first remake, so that's already a huge improvement in my opinion.

Still, it's just a good game, but as a mix of both modern and old school RE, it doesn't particularly stand out for me on either front, if anything, it's just making me want to go back and replay the original 2 and 4 after I'm done with it.

Even making every shot count, hacking legs off zombies, avoiding enemies when possible, I still got to the game as Leon feeling like I was low on ammo. Claire is a little bit easier because she gets better guns and a shot of the flame rounds can often kill a licker with one hit. Leon on the other hand can dump 5+ shotgun blasts to the thing's brain point blank and he's lucky if that kills it. The Birkin fights are way more annoying than the original, and Mr. Tyrant's pursuit AI is as obnoxious as the alien in Alien Isolation. The fucker can even magically open doors that are bolted from the other side or locked with keys that you haven't gotten yet. That and he's omnipotent and able to teleport from one side of the police station to the room next to you instantly, even if you're walking and not shooting.

Compared to the original, REmake 2 does some things better and some things worse. But it's mot as good on the whole, as the original just felt so huge, despite it's short length and handled scenarios MUCH better.

Compared to other modern games...

Literal 25/10, GOTY, all years (since like 2006 or so). Only RE7 comes close to it on PS4.

>> No.5360128

They're about equally different from the original RE games, just in different directions.
>RE4-6 makes the combat more functional and makes it the focus of the game
>RE7 makes the scripted events more prominent and makes it the focus of the game
Neither feels like a Resident Evil game. 4-6 are pure TPS action, while 7 is a slightly interactive cutscene gallery that plays like a movie.

> you still count bullets in 7
Only at the beginning of the game before you've gotten a grasp of how things work. By the end, you're carrying 4 or 5 weapons with plenty of ammo for each, killing things easily with headshots. It reminded me a lot of Revelations where you think it's going to be a slow game with not much combat, but by the end of the game it feels like you're just going room to room killing things.
>and it goes hard on horror, which cannot be said for 4-6
It handles horror differently. Speaking mainly for 4 since I'm most familiar with 4, there's definitely a big focus on horror throughout the game, it's just a horror that stems naturally from the enemy encounters and music. The way RE7 did horror started pissing me off because the game either spawns enemies right next to you out of nowhere or you walk into a scripted sequence where you lose control of your character and some monster person starts fucking with your screen. 4's horror is more atmospheric, 7 feels like a haunted house ride

>you're in the golden age of biohazard now, bitch.
Eh....the golden age was back in the fixed angle days. We are currently on the verge of a high point after more than a decade of garbage, but it's not like they are making good NEW games. The remake of 2 is dope as fuck, yes, but it's not even an original game. I'm very much looking forward to the remake of 3, but after that I hope they make actual survival horror games with zombies again....7 was fun, but it did not really feel like RE.

It's super fucking weird to talk about this now that I actually think about it. From one side, I definitely like RE2 vanilla more and I think it does certain things way better, but at the same time the remake's reimagining of Mr. X and how he works is fucking genius. They also recaptured that RE feeling for the entirety of the police station segment and some part of the lab/sewers.

What boggles my mind is that they've taken a lot from the original and did it justice but at the same time completely fucked up shit that should've been easy to understand and port over - A/B scenarios being almost the exact same is the clearest example of this. It's like they ran out of development time, because each run has its differences in terms of plot and some basic starting/middle locations that you access, but it's nowhere near enough since the original did more with it and didn't have boss fights which made no sense narratively. Leon and Claire also met up more, and the locations like the lab were way bigger and had more going on. If gaming journalism wasn't a fucking tragedy maybe someone could've asked the developers about this, but they're probably too afraid they wouldn't get the paycheck if they didn't give everything 10/10s.

I kinda miss being able to examine the enviornment and get some description of what I was looking at, or maybe a hidden item. Feels like it was a part of RE's identity for a long time, even though it doesn't necessarily sound important. I didn't like that there wasn't much strategy to fighting lickers/being able to stun some enemies, or how weak they've made the magnum when it was usually the "fuck you" weapon in the classic games. Not sure if I like the new plant enemies, they were super fucking weak and more of an annoyance than a scary enemy.

So yeah, tl;dr: It's too bad they didn't work on the new game a bit more, because we could've had a tenner as opposed to a really solid 7/8. Slightly off the mark as it is now.

I know exactly what you mean. Unfortunately that stuff was a product of fixed angles and unfortunately those days are done:(

I think it would be possible to include this in the game as half homage/half a way to get hidden ammo or herbs without it impacting the game negatively, but it would require lots of work and pretty much removing button prompts, which probably wouldn't fly.

It actually reminded me of the fact that I was watching REmake 2 on some stream recently, and noticed that they make the game WAY too retard-proof, and somehow it's harder to see when you're playing for yourself. The sprinkler won't let you sprinkle the herbicide in the lab if you haven't cooled it, you won't leave the room with Dr. Li's ID badge thing if you don't figure out to combine it with the bracelet, there's like five emails explaining the bracelets or straight up telling you to look underneath the trophy to get the code necessary to progress, etc. Shit is kinda sad.

I'm conflicted about 6 though. I believe that no doubt it failed really bad at being Resident Evil, but was otherwise fun as a game itself, even if it wasn't anything special or out of the ordinary, really.
